[riot-devel] Let's code together: Hacktoberfest @ Zuehlke Hamburg

2019-10-13 Thread Lotte Steenbrink
Dear RIOTeers,
This week on Thursday, 17th of October we're hosting a hackathon-themed Meetup
at Zühlke (the company where Simon Brummer and I work now). Hacktoberfest is a
month-long, worldwide celebration of open source contributions (for more info,
visit https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com/details
).
I'd like to warmly invite the Hamburg RIOT community to visit us, hack together
and earn a limited Hacktoberfest T-Shirt on top ;)

For more information regarding the schedule, address etc. see
https://www.meetup.com/de-DE/Zuhlke-Hamburg-Meetup/events/265557768/
 . Please
sign up to the meetup event or drop me a quick e-mail so we can plan snacks
accordingly.

Best,
Lotte___

Hi all,
Martine has added a point to the list but there's no invitation yet, are we
waiting or is the meeting cancelled nonetheless? :)

Cheers,
Lotte

unfortunately no, I don’t know the organizers, at least not directly (i.e.
I know someone who knows someone… :D). I’ll try to get in touch with them
though, and report back here as soon as I hear something!

@Matthias: I’m not completely opposed to the idea, but think that since I
haven’t been in the RIOT community for long, there are others that can
  probably represent it much better!

I’ve been told that Lotte was thinking about speaking about RIOT on the
Open Techschool conf in summer. Maybe she’d be interested in spreading
the RIOT at OpenTech Summit too :)

Correction: A friend of mine is a co-organizer of the opentechschool conf and
asked me to think about submitting a RIOT talk when they're re ready to
accept submissions (afaik the call for submissions isn't out yet). Apparently
I miscommunicated something wrongly to Lucas there, I didn't intend to sneak
talks past you folks in case that's the impression now. :D

That is not my impression, and I doubt it's anybody's.
The fact is: we need more people giving talks about RIOT and presenting the
community, because... there are more and more talks to give!
It's as simple as that. So if someone is volunteering to do this particular
talk (e.g. Lotte? Lucas?) please go ahead and grab the spot.
Personally I will most likely be in California at that time, so I don't
 qualify ;)
FYI if you are afraid of the blank slide, you can be provided with an
existing RIOT slide deck that you can go ahead and personalize (or keep
 as-is, up to you ;).

We've amassed some slide decks from Oleg during our preparation for grenoble,
I' think they'll be a great help. :) If nobody is against it, I'd like to try
and submit a Talk for the OpenTech summit. I'm pondering a bit over the “spin”
to make a RIOT talk fit in with the general direction of the event, so if
anybody has a cool idea, please let me know! :)

Re: [riot-devel] RPL (and more generally, networking) on border router

2015-02-24 Thread Lotte Steenbrink
Hi Emmanuel, hi all,

Am 23.02.2015 um 17:42 schrieb Emmanuel Baccelli emmanuel.bacce...@inria.fr:

 Hi Lotte,

on your blog posts for watr.li you mention using R-idge + 6LoWPAN on a Pi,
and you mention using RPL (or AODV) on top of that, in the near future, which
 is a very interesting perspective.

My question is: how do you intend to go about this?

Actually, we've already gone about this, and we're working on a blogpost about
this right now. The approach we opted for is a bit... pragmatic due to time
constraints, but I'd be very very interested in improving this situation in
general.

The situation we have right now is as follows:
Rosand Tech provides us with a RPL daemon [0] implementation, which Martin
patched to make it work again with the latest Linux kernel. This daemon does
its RPL-y thing, communicates with our RIOT nodes through the R-IDGE stick and
writes all found routes to the Linux routing table.
This all sounds very nice, but there's a catch: The rpld code seems to be a
wrapper around contiki's native mode. So what it does is it spawns a contiki
instance, let *that one* do all the RPL operations, tunnels the packets
generated by the contiki instance through towards the R-IDGE and back, and in
case it hears about any route updates from the contki instance, then sets these
in the linux kernel, too.

As I said, it's probably a more pragmatic than perfect solution from Rosand,
but there's one big benefit of this “hack”: we git a little bit of RIOT-RPL
interop experience.
( This is where Martin's RPL improvement PRs came from. :) )
It would be great to discuss approaches on the mailing list, because there
may be some cross-benefits at hand.

With Ubuntu people we had discussed using RIOT native instance running in
Linux to use RIOT network stack. Discussing with Ludwig today, he mentioned
another approach whereby the RIOT network stack could be straightforward to
port to Linux, and thus provide their missing IoT network stack to
communicate with RIOT devices (and still have a single code base to maintain
 for us).

That sounds like a great idea. There seem to be some RPL implementations for
linux around [1], but one of them seems to rely heavily on kernel modules
(which could be avoided altogether with the oonf api's solution of listening on
a tun/tap device which tunnels all unroutable packets into user space we talked
about at the NSTF meeting), the second one was written in python, and the third
one I couldn't completely make sense of ad-hoc. And I have no idea about the
interoperability status of either of them.
Do you already have a particular concept in mind? It would great to know
 about this.

See above. :) If anybody else on the list has ben working on the same problem,
please share!

Cheers,
Lotte

 Emmanuel

Re: [riot-devel] Periodical (virtual) meetings

Hi All,
I second Adams and Teemus inquiries. Is it possible to find minutes somewhere?

(A friend of mine told me about the webRTC-based services https://talky.io/,
https://palava.tv/ and https://appear.in/. Talky seems to have screen sharing
(for presentations!) and was nice to fiddle with, in case the search for a
platform continues)

How do you solve multiple persons in a location? Is it enough to just have
