 Just as a general remark, I think it is lucky that the apps that have
 been moved are mainly backend configuration stuff and not end-user apps,
 thus the audience affected is magnitudes smaller. On the other hand,
 because these are core apps affecting the whole system, it is really
 important that any translations are really accurate, thus the use of Google
 Translate can only be a very first rough approximation for these strings
 (and of course sometimes the administrators will prefer to use English for
 very specialised, DHIS2-centric vocabulary).

After speaking with the i18n gurus who wrote the software which runs the
translation server, they suggest to put comments into file. I think this is
about as good as we can do at this point. We could at least try and point
you in the right direction. However, given the nature of the application,
it is sometimes quite difficult to know exactly where strings will show up.

However we are in the process of automating a lot of this, so that the
translations will show up more quickly in a built version of the
application, so that hopefully, you can translate a bunch of stuff, and
then see what was translated in context more rapidly than what is possible
at the moment. We are not there quite yet, but will keep you updated as we
make progress with this.

Good point, let me clarify about  Google and Yandex Translate. Sometimes,
these services get things right. It also gets a lot of stuff very wrong,
but it may be useful for translators. If they find it useful, they can use
it. The "translation memory" feature will actually present human translated
terms which have occurred elsewhere (sometimes in DHIS2, sometimes in other
applications)  which may also be similar to the translated string, which
hopefully will save some effort and typing.

The translation  system will automatically flag these machine translations
as "Needs work". If they have this flag, they will not be automatically
brought into the main translations until they are reviewed by someone.

I have also added a few other things here

1) A glossary. This is essentially the terminology from the DHIS2 glossary
 These
tend to be very specific technical "invented" terms which are used
throughout DHIS2. As you say, it may be difficult to translate some of
these easily into a given language, but it generally should be the starting
point for translations, since this helps to form the basis of the rest of
the translation.

2) Terminology. An example for French is here
.
These are common terms which the translation server has identified as being
used quite often. If these are translated, the server will suggest these to
the translator for possible use, when they appear in a given phrase. This
helps to ensure that the terminology used is consistent throughout the
translation. This is also a useful starting point for a good way to ensure
consistency in the translation.

It would be great if the French speakers on the list could help with the
completion of the translation. There is not much left, so if everyone
pitches in, it might not take a long time to finish things up.

I am going to try and merge in all of the Spanish translations now to bring
that one up to date as well.

If there are other languages being used out there, and you are "missing"
translations which you know have been translated before, please send a mail
on the list and we will take a look at it.

In Burkina Faso we still use french version for our health ministry and we are 
also faced to the approximative translation of the interface. We are fluent in

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for all the feedback. I realize this may have been a bit of a
bizarre question, but we just wanted to confirm the need for this. I think
we knew the answer before, but sometimes its good just to be sure.

Part of the reason I was asking is because the development team is going to
have to work out some issues related to the translations, which go beyond
other issues like missing translations in the event capture module and
other modules. We will keep you updated.

In the meantime, I am going to have to rework how the translations are
structured in the translation server to reflect the new structure of the
code and apps.

Once I finish this I will reach out to all of you again and ask for your
help to polish up the translation in French.

In fact, a few days back, we also raised the issue we are facing with
DHIS2's limitation to translate the actual program name on the data entry
screen on the Event Capture module. Lars said that it will be done

Same here, at PSI we have several countries that rely on the French
interface, mainly Benin, Mali, Senegal, DRC, Cote d'Ivoire, Cameroon,
Madagascar.

As you know I've already done a lot of the translations in the past and
happy to further contribute and clean up.

Hi Jason,
I use both French and English user interfaces. But there's more and more
implementations in Francophone countries (Senegal, Burkina Faso,
Madagascar, Ivory Coast, Benin, Togo, etc.) and it is important that the
French user interface remains available as this is generally an important
factor to convince the beneficiaries of the project in these countries to
its adoption. I suppose it's the same with Sapnish speaking countries.

Asunto: [Dhis2-users] French translations..anyone?

 

Hi there DHIS2 users.

 

Is anyone out there actively using DHIS2  with the French or Spanish user 
interface? We are just cleaning up some of the translations and would like to 
know if there are users of DHIS2 in French or Spanish.
