From the purchase and return of many USB RS-232 adapters, I can
state that the Belkin units (various part numbers) work the best. I
have done extensive testing of this subject matter during my
development of the MARS-ALE software.

and XP...it cost $ 30...I got mine at Staples,but I would imagine they are

Usually you have to have something connected to the adapter in order to
initialize everything.
Then it will start showing up with a com port address.
You typically can't just plug the cable in and get everything initialized.
Did you have a tnc or something active on the cable at the time?
