I looked in both these locations and I cannot find this file. Why would
this not be there?

Do you see "libdirectfb_fbdev.so" being built? I think that is the problem
as at runtime this library is not found.

--dfb:system=devmem,video-phys=0x8500,video-length=16777216,accelerator=6400
and I still get the same result.
when I run fbset -i I get :
mode "720x480-15"

bash$ ./application
--dfb:system=devmem,video-phys=0x8300,video-length=691200,accelerator=6400
for reference run
bash$ fbset -i
