[IxDA Discuss] Re-cap of November Event Steve Po rtigal presents “Yes, My Iguana Loves to Cha- Cha: Improv, Creativity and Collaboration. ”
On November 19 Steve Portigal presented “Yes, My Iguana Loves to Cha-Cha: Improv, Creativity and Collaboration.” We’d like to thank our special guest speaker for engaging us in a relaxed, informative, and truly interactive evening of improv games that gave us fresh ways of thinking about our creative work. Steve did a fantastic job facilitating a nicely-paced mix of slide presentation, exercises with audience members, and subsequent group discussion in which the room was openly engaged. A lot of interesting and thoughtful ideas were exchanged. We also are grateful to the good people of R/GA for hosting us, especially Chloe Gottlieb, VP, Executive Creative Director, Interaction Design and Courtney Buckle, Recruiter. Thanks to all of our amazing local volunteers who made the evening possible, especially MJ Broadbent who worked with Steve to develop the program and Jesse Wilbur who managed virtually all of the logistics at R/GA (including live streaming) while working on a major pitch that ran concurrently with our event. And last but not least, a big thank you to the brilliant IxDA New York community members who attended: your participation in the improv games and conversation really electrified the event! [IxDA Discuss] [Event] IxDA NYC presents UX Show and Tell with Chris Avore
IxDA NYC is pleased to present UX Show and Tell with Chris Avore UX Show and Tell is a casual workshop that’s all about the work, where you get feedback on your UX, IA and IxD deliverables from practitioners instead of stakeholders. Because let's face it: even the most involved practitioners of the UX community have few places to share work with other helpful colleagues in a face to face environment. Even if you don't have something to show, help your fellow IA's, designers, and researchers by sharing solutions with those who are showing work. The Format There will be three rooms to keep the number of people small and facilitate discussion. Each person gets about ½ hour. They begin by providing a background on the project and the deliverable or document he or she will show. Presenters then identify whether they're providing work that addressed a unique problem that others could benefit learning from, or they state the problem or issue they're facing and ask the group for help. The next 15 to 20 minutes are spent walking through the document and how others have solved similar problems. The remaining half is reserved for feedback and discussion. We plan on having 3 – 5 presentations per room depending how quick each one is. If you are interested in showing your work please contact us at nyc.i...@gmail.com. We're looking for 9 – 15 people to share their work. Work can be any type of deliverable or artifact, such as personas, wireframes, scenarios and user stories, concept models, site maps, prototypes, content strategy, sketchboards, design process, your portfolio, your resume, so forth. We need people with work in different formats, we'll have projector in one room, a large LCD in another, and the third will not have something to display. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Registration: http://ixdanycdec09.eventbrite.com/ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ WHEN Thursday, December 17, 2009 6:30 - 7:00 p.m. Networking and refreshments 7:00 - 7:10 p.m. Welcome and announcements 7:10 - 8:45 p.m. Break out into 3 groups and begin sessions. [IxDA Discuss] IxDA NYC presents Steve Portigal Yes, My Iguana Loves to Cha-Cha: Improv, Creativity and Collaboration - Just a few seats left!
There are just a few seats left for Steve Portigal Yes, My Iguana Loves to Cha-Cha: Improv, Creativity and Collaboration. Register Now: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/458927665/ *An interactive evening with Steve Portigal :* *Yes, My Iguana Loves to Cha-Cha: Improv, Creativity and Collaboration* Improv is not stand-up comedy. It's a series of games with rules that offer huge degrees of freedom within a set of constraints. In these games we bring out a lot of basic, quickly understood and communicated rules of culture that are implicit, not explicit. The activities of design (collaboration, creativity, and design research, for starters) have interesting similarities with improv: All have in-the-moment aspects; we learn upon reflection; there's enormous unspoken interaction and there is often an aha moment. Design and improv also have important similarities: the need to collaborate and brainstorm, the importance of breakthrough thinking, the balance between process, structure, and unfettered creativity. Playing with improv can make us more mindful of the power of listening, and can be harnessed to create a more collaborative work culture, as a way to develop one's own creativity, or to help warm up teammates and clients in workshops and design sessions. In this interactive presentation you will learn more about improv, listening, creativity, and how they all connect together to support one another. [IxDA Discuss] REMINDER: [EVENT] IxDA NYC - Thurs, August 13 - Prototyping for UX Practitioners
One last reminder for Thursday's event. If you haven't gotten a chance to sign up, you'll want to do so soon. Look forward to seeing everyone there! Ever had a moment when you’re presenting your detailed design work and you get an unenthusiastic Is that it? from your audience? This can sometimes happen when a project has been in design development without conceptual feedback or consensus-building. We often move forward rapidly with our detailed design work due to time pressure. Sure, we incorporate our assumptions about the users, their needs, the technology, and the business. But those assumptions need to be validated early and often (with stakeholders and end users) to ensure success. Prototyping -- building a mockup of a design to validate its direction -- has never been easier. Designers today have a plethora of tools for every stage of the development process. New techniques make it fast and easy to get a design working, allowing you to effectively communicate your intentions to others. We've invited Todd Zaki Warfel, author of the upcoming book “A Practitioner's Guide to Prototyping”, to give us a comprehensive overview of the prototyping landscape. You'll see the full gamut of prototyping techniques, from paper to JavaScript and everything in between. Todd will also lead participants in a hands-on paper prototyping exercise to demonstrate the amazing power of paper. The event is free of charge and open to all interested parties. However, for security reasons, only those on the guest list will be admitted.
