Re: [IxDA Discuss] SnifTag
I'm posting this on behalf of Marcel. He's one of the guys behind SNIF. To the IXDA group %u2013 thanks for all the interest on your group. I have received multiple forwards of this post today. In the interest of an intellectually fruitful discussion, I wanted to highlight and clarify some of the issues brought up. @Rob: You make a valid point. It could very easily be done and turned on its head. While I don't have in-depth knowledge of the inner workings of the Fitbit, every person in our office has worn the SNIF Tag for the greater part of two years. The three-axis accelerometer (similar to that used by Apple in the iPhone) is only one part of the system and provides a data point, from which we have a state-classification algorithm specific to quadrupeds embedded in the firmware of the tag. For your reference, the SNIF Tag concept (May 2005) predates the iPhone. @Jake: Pet owners are very concerned with how much exercise their dogs get. Think about how much money is spent on pet walking and related services. Unlike a webcam, which requires constant attention, or recording on motion activation, the SNIF Tag automatically aggregates activity data, then transforms this into a visually accessible format. This allows the user to quickly and efficiently notice trends, patterns and anomalies. The data is available historically (month view down to five minutes' average), and does not require continuous monitoring. We are working on alert systems that would be able to contact the owner on trigger events that they can previously set. Pacemakers are designed to handle everyday radio interference. The SNIF Tag has a radio that is only 1/1000th the power of a cell phone, and it has achieved full FCC approval only after meeting stringent conditions. It will not interfere with a pacemaker. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I love this - its a bit more than a lot of people would like to spend though. I wonder how big of a user base they have. I actually met the guy who started this at Overlap this past year. Pretty amazing and smart guy. Really hope it succeeds. Re: [IxDA Discuss] SnifTag
Clearly, you're not a dog owner, Casey. :) I've been watching this company for a while. They just released the snif tag, and chances are pretty good my dog will be getting one for Christmas. It's a pretty innovative use of the technology, and I can just picture this being used on kids next. :) -eva On Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 10:15 PM, Casey Edgeton [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I love this - its a bit more than a lot of people would like to spend though. Or if you have a dog w/a particular ailment, but can't bring the dog to work, you can monitor their activity level—too inactive and you know something's wrong. I'm fortunate that I bring my dog to work w/me just about every day, but I can see the usefulness of this on the days she's too lazy to get out of bed—gotta love the life of an English bulldog. Re: [IxDA Discuss] SnifTag
Seems similar to Fitbit (although Fitbit isn't available yet) - I wonder why people couldn't wear Sniftag and dogs Fitbit? I guess it's an issue of canine-centered design. http://www.fitbit.com/ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] SnifTag a Practical Application
I have a real world practical application that might make SnifTag useful. One of my beloved English Bulldogs has seizures. She only has the a few times a year, so it's not as bad as it could be. However, the more they have seizures and the longer they last, the more likely they are to become more frequent. The longer the seizure, the more dangerous it gets, as it could literally raise their body temperature and cook their brain. Thankfully, has only had three. However, several months ago, my wife and I came home to find that she had seizured while we were out. We had no idea how long the seizure had lasted. This might be a practical application for my SnifTag. If there's a way to monitor her movement and activity level, I might be able to go back to that moment and have an idea how long it lasted. This has a pretty significant impact on the recommended treatment. Anyway, Marcel and the group behind SnifTag are onto something that I think could, and hopefully will, prove to be very valuable. People spend a lot of money on their pets. Hell, Leona Helmsly left her pooch millions of dollars to be cared for. I know our dogs are family and there's nothing we wouldn't do for them. Cheers! And yet, they can't even make a landing page that properly handles even slightly larger fonts. Sheesh. Is basic testing dead? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
