Just to clarify: we are working on RPM packaging specifically for
Enterprise Linux (RHEL and derivatives such as CentOS), not on generic
RPM packaging.
You are welcome to drop by the geotools and geoserver projects; if you can give
us a script to package the rpm we may be able to make it part of our release
process :-)

Although in my experience it turns out to __be__ generally possible to
develop distribution neutral java packages, in the FOSS4G area we have
additional issues with e.g. Java Advanced Imaging (jai) and its license,
