Dear colleagues

I came across this article in the Guardian this month - More than 120,000
workers from minority ethnic backgrounds have quit their jobs because of
racism, suggests a landmark study that has found workplace discrimination is
sapping the confidence of a large part of the UK workforce.

It is disappointing to learn about the scale of Racial discrimination in the UK
work environments.

Best wishes

Subject: Study to understand the scale of Racial Injustice in Geographic
Information Science/Earth Observation Research and Education

Dear colleagues,

I came across this article on ”Use of Proprietary Software in the Aid Sector
Perpetuates Racial Injustice “ at

https://ivangayton.net/2020/07/03/use-of-proprietary-software-in-the-aid-sector-perpetuates-racial-injustice/

It is disappointing to read that African colleagues are not able to participate
as equals in humanitarian and development work in their own continent.

I would like to learn and understand more the scale of Racial Injustice in
Geographic Information Science / Earth Observation Research and Education .
Could I request you to share any information on this topic so I can learn more
as I am writing an article on this topic.

I co-founded GeoForAll for bridging the geospatial digital divide. GeoForAll
was established with a vision to make geospatial education and digital economy
opportunities accessible to all, enabling a better future for everyone. Access
to quality education and opportunities is key for getting rid of extreme
poverty and enable broadly shared prosperity for all.

Why GeoForAll?

GeoForAll is committed to making geospatial education and opportunities
accessible to all. This will help enable widening STEM education opportunities
for all. You can find details at

I really hope more academic colleagues will support GeoForAll to help reduce
Racial Injustice in Geospatial Science Education and Research.

Thank you to all colleagues who already expressed interest to be co-authors for
this study and article. I will be contacting you after 5th Sep 2022.

If you are interested to be a co-author for this study and article please email
me at

 by 5th Sep 2022.

I will appreciate information on the following queries

If you are doing teaching and research in Geospatial Science or Earth
Observation, please share ideas on how you are addressing Racial Injustice in
GIS/EO in your teaching and research? Please provide details.

Does the current Geographic Information Science curriculum - Masters,
Undergraduate courses at your University also include Free and Open Source GIS?
If not, why? Please provide details.

It is important that all colleagues who contributed their inputs and worked on
research papers, grant applications etc are acknowledged for their efforts and
their names included according to their contributions. Are there any examples
of sidelining of staff or students from co-authoring a paper of their work
that they have contributed. If so, why?

Are there any examples of racial discrimination in GIS/EO Academic jobs
recruitment process including promotions at any universities. For example,
qualified candidates from ethnic minority backgrounds being sidelined in
academic appointments or promotions and those without a PhD getting appointed
or promoted as an academic in any UK University when there are suitable
candidates with PhD from ethnic minority backgrounds etc.

Are there any barriers for participation of economically poor colleagues and
students in any GIS/EO Initiatives, projects , educational courses etc that you
are aware of? If so, please provide details?

How can we replace the cycle of exclusion with a virtuous cycle of inclusion
and human development?

Please email me your ideas and suggestions at
suchith.an...@ethicaldatainitiative.org

Every day, each and every one of us can stand up against racial prejudice and
disrespectful attitudes.

Let’s build a world beyond racism and discrimination, where we all exercise our
human rights. Be a human rights champion!
