Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] [Geo4All] osgeo board request world wind consider joining the foundation

2018-06-12 Thread Jody Garnett
Patrick:

We do have an easy way to join, as an OSGeo community project.

This does require interest (project's ask to join) rather respect (that we
offer to all grandmothers).

OSGeo as an organization has standards we ask all our projects to meet. As
an example communicating clearly how a project functions and how new
contributors can join. In reviewing you GitHub repository I was able to
find your contact details on the CONTRIBUTING.md

instructions, but could not determine the other team members (unless it is
this GitHub list ).

If it helps GRASS, would would be the matriarch of our community, also went
through incubation to work through communication goals such as these.

Very kind and generous words Charlie!

This planet needs to find a path forward together.

Open source software is a beautiful driver for achieving that.

Hi Patrick,

Just want to publicly say thanks for all you have done and the energy and the
direction you have brought to the GeoForAll community.

I'm sure I speak for many others when I say that I have always appreciated your
insights and encouragement. What I've taken as a core message from you, over
time, is that we are one world, and we should be working on shared "commons" to
work to improve this world. You've certainly done that here in tangible and
intangible ways. You exemplify what global public service is all about.

I am also inspired knowing you now are turning your attention to littler ones

All the best, stay in touch, and a sincere thank you.

Dear Patrick,

I am a member of the PyWPS PSC, a project that graduated just recently. PyWPS
was in active incubation for 3 years; it was indeed a long process, but along
the way it was generally clear what we were missing to reach the finish line.

I would suggest the Worldwind PSC to share the project incubation check list
and publicly seek help to complete the most difficult items.

Best wishes for Worldwind. Regards.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] [Geo4All] osgeo board request world wind consider joining the foundation

2018-06-12 Thread Luís Moreira de Sousa
Dear Patrick,

for as much as I like and respect the Worldwind project, I would not favour
skipping the incubation process. Incubation is the most important contribution
of OSGeo to the community. It is the process that guarantees the quality and
longevity of the projects sanctioned by the foundation.

I urge those involved in Worldwind to formally enter the project into the
incubator. That would start a formal partnership with OSGeo, with an OSGeo
mentor assigned to Worldwind. The process itself will strengthen the project
and guarantee its excellence.

Best regards.

Hi Patrick,

there is no problem with age, GRASS GIS incubated among first projects ;-)

PyWPS project graduation checklist can be viewed
https://github.com/geopython/pywps/wiki/ProjectGraduationChecklist

just for inspiration and having the picture how "difficult" the process is
or is not.

anyway, of course, there must be will on the project side, we (as OSGeo)
can just offer our help (like really do some paper work e.g.) and support
(just knocking on your shoulder and ensuring, that things are going to be
ok).

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] [Geo4All] osgeo board request world wind consider joining the foundation

2018-06-12 Thread Hogan, Patrick (ARC-PX)
Luis,

Dearly appreciate your concern and support!

If WorldWind is not sufficient to be part of the OSGeo family as is,
maybe being grand-mothered in, given its age,
a good five years older than OSGeo,
then I guess we’ll just have to carry on without.

We simply have not the time to navigate the obstacle course,
despite being as Open Source Geospatial as it gets,
both in principle and in action, for quite some time.

I have always considered ESA-NASA WorldWind as part of OSGeo by default.
Now my tenure is about up, so into the sunset I go, wishing more for the world.

Regards.

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for your email and your contributions to OSGeo Principles over the years
. Though I do not have background knowledge of the incubation discussions that
you went through in OSGeo , I do hope that Worldwind becomes part of the OSGeo
family in the near future. We will keep trying.

GeoForAll have always welcomed Worldwind and other like minded initiatives as
part of our outreach efforts in education and we are hoping that this will
lead in the future for building more synergies . The Europa challenge has been
a great boost for GeoForAll education efforts and we are grateful for your
tireless work over the years for making this possible.

I want to wish you the very best for the next chapter of your life. Great idea
to go back to school teaching after your retirement. That will also help the
GeoForAll School Education efforts ... Thanks again for your contributions to
Open Principles in education.

Best wishes,

Jody, Howdy!

Despite every attempt to support OSGeo and the principles therein, WorldWind
seems to always be met with something missing. I am not WorldWind. WorldWind is
an open source platform that has been dedicated to delivering geospatial data
for 15 years now.

I’m sure WorldWind would like to be embraced by OSGeo, but somehow it seems
WorldWind has never learned the special handshake. I am old now and retiring
soon, so others will need to take the lead, if there is one to take. I have
repeatedly expressed the desire for WorldWind to be, as you put it, “a part of
the OSGeo family.”

As an ESA-NASA open source project, in full support of OSGeo principles, I do
not understand why WorldWind is not “part of the OSGeo family.” I hope OSGeo
will choose to ^adopt^ ESA-NASA WorldWind someday as part of their family,
someday.

For my part, I plan to return to my former career, some 30-plus years ago, as a
High School science teacher. Now I am looking forward to work with Kindergarten
kids, pretty much the ‘unhinged’ ^wild bunch^ with whom I feel closest too.

May OSGeo be the ‘big tent’ it can be for the world of Open Source Geospatial
software.

Morning Patrick (and incubation list).

The most recent board meeting has a request for the incubation committee to ask
you about World Wind joining OSGeo. See Discuss and approve OSGeo as partner
for UN World Challenge
2018.

As I understand it the GeoForAll is wanting to take part due to the educational
outreach nature of the challenge, but feels awkward since the project is not
part of the OSGeo family. The

Subject: [Geo4All] GEO Climate Workshop: Earth observations for the Paris
agreement

The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) invites climate partners and those
interesting in contributing to our efforts in support of the Paris Climate
Agreement to join us for the 1st GEO Climate Workshop: Earth Observations for
the Paris Agreement in Geneva, Switzerland, following the 2018 GEO Symposium.

The workshop will take stock of climate initiatives and activities in the GEO
Work Programme and beyond, including the work of key organizations including
GCOS, IPCC, WMO and UNFCCC, in order to identify gaps and develop tangible
action areas. It will address all relevant areas in the Paris Agreement,
focusing on areas where GEO can provide most added value: adaptation, loss &
damage and capacity development.

The overall objectives of the workshop are to:

  1. enhance the understanding of how the Earth Observation community can
support the implementation of the Paris Agreement, and;
  2. to discuss a more integrated approach to climate across the GEO Work
Programme.
