Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Map Asia 2007?

2007-05-17 Thread Markus Müller

Tyler,

quite likely I will be there - I submitted two abstracts for papers that
will discuss Open Source-based projects that we are doing at lat/lon. If
the papers will be accepted I will mainly talk about deegree, but also
in general about Open Source GIS.

Unfortunately I have no idea who will give the workshops.

cheers,

Markus

I've never read the ISO19115 core document, unwilling to pay for it ;)
The most copious profile I've read of it is the North American
Profile, a common US/Canada draft effort to replace the FGDC standard.
http://frot.org/terradue/minimal_metadata.html were some long notes i
made at that time. It's overdesigned for many use cases, and doesn't
account well for current or near-future online distribution mechanisms.
But it has a lot of instituional buy-in, at least in theory.

GeoNetwork takes the only sensible approach which is "support many
profiles, many protocols, and see what shakes out" (at least that is
my impression of it :) )

I have - literally - several five-foot-long scrolls of further commentary
on this subject matter, and when they're publishable will start
dropping more on the near-empty blog started just to spam the osgeo
community about it :) http://metadatamadness.wordpress.com/

[OSGeo-Discuss] Open Source Geospatial Foundation Announces Request for Proposal for Hosting 2008 Conference

2007-05-17 Thread Jeff McKenna

The Open Source Geospatial Foundation, or OSGeo, today released a
request for proposal, or RFP, (available at
http://www.osgeo.org/files/webfiles/conference/rfp/osgeo-conference-2008-request-for-proposal.pdf)
for the hosting of the FOSS4G 2008 conference. As the excitement for the

upcoming FOSS4G 2007 conference in Victoria Canada builds
(http://www.foss4g2007.org/), OSGeo aims for the following 2008
conference to be a major geospatial conference during that year. The RFP
solicitation closes July 20th, 2007.

This is one of the eternally recurring topic on mail lists.
I suggest it to be left the way it is, maybe with a warning in the
footer of the message.

From my experience, either way you would have messages going the wrong

If it is more likely that a person initiating a reply
to a mailing list posting will want the reply to go
to the list, rather than to the poster, then the use
of mechanisms that make replying to the list easier
should be used.

Hi Arnulf,

It would have been nice to have you in the meeting... next time, perhaps. We
have already a Portuguese mailing list and wiki that Paulo Marcondes has set
up. We will soon start using it...

Hey,
congratulations to this event! Please feel free to add a short report and loads
of links into the OSGeo Wiki in Portuguese.

Talking of speaking in tongues: OSGeo can provide for a mailing list in
Portuguese if you need one. This is not trying to take over anything but simply
to offer a place under the roof of OSGeo where your mailing list address might
be found easily and feel at home.

The same applies to the OSGeo homepage, it has grown to be able to talk in
different languages now including menus and after having recovered from this
years conference some of you might want to translate some more of the
introductory pages. There is a template in the Wiki to document the status:
http://wiki.osgeo.org/index.php/Portal_Translation_Status

If you have questions WebCom will be able to help.

Best regards,
Arnulf.

Tyler

Hi,

Maybe Spanish OSGeo community is interested about having a translated
version of the journal (or some parts). I can't talk on behalf of them,
of course, but as the only one OSGeo website Spanish translator, at this
moment, I'm also interested on having the maximum number of documents in
my language (and maybe in the future contribute to the main OSGeo journal).

If Spanish list is interested, I can help with translation, but if
nobody else helps me I think we will not success because it's quite big
document for one translator.

(for Spanish List)
¿Qué pensáis? ¿Alguien se anima? Puede ser un buen entrenamiento para el
trabajo en el "Libro"...

Hi Arnulf!

What a great resource! This is exactly what is needed to allow everyone
who is interested in OSGeo to promote its case. I'm grateful for the
collection of definitions and concepts because I was asked to give a
seminar on FOSS software during a local conference here in Uppsala. Why
I, a simple FOSS user was asked? Well, that's related to the "Use cases
for FOSS-GIS in universities" thread - there are simply no other people
around who use FOSS software in GIS.

Cheers,

Henning

PS: I suggest "consolidate" instead of "bundle" in 1. under Education
and long term outreach.

Hi,
thank you for your reply. I added your suggestion. Next time please feel free
to do it yourself, after all it is a Wiki... :-)

Hopefully we will be able to continue developing these pages but it seems like everybody is busy with other stuff.

I imagine something like: http://www.freebsd.org/advocacy/ with links and

We (VisCom) will try to pick up a few threads that have been started in
the past and looked promising but then have been abandoned due to pending
"real" work. I would be very interested in getting a little unreal again
and actively position OSGeo mission and brand in the market. We have
already done a good job by just being there but this could be done more
actively.

Be prepared to do things if you suggest them (this is a try a preventing

not pick them up).
