Rafal,

Recently, I've been writing a small article about FOSS in GIS with focus
on Python applications and researched the history a bit. Here is a list
of dates I've identified:

late 70's - begin of Map Overlay and Statistical System (MOSS)

I've found [1] exact year when MOSS was published/released - 1978
It's also confirmed on Polish GeoForum website [2]

 Hi,

 Interesting article.

I am surprised not to see JTS even mentioned in this brief history, as it is
a founding library which has been used in some way by most of OSGEO
 projects.
Martin Davis could say when it was released for the first time.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Resource viewer for grama panchayat

2008-08-22 Thread നെടുമ്പാല ജയ്സെന്‍
 Hai,
Let me introduce my work to the list:-

http://cheruvannur.web4all.in/resources/

Hope, I can hear valuable suggestions.

It is hosted on a Debian GNU/Linux Etch server. It was my main project
during my M.Sc. course in last semester, and I decided to do this because I
wanted to do something useful for the panchayat - my first employer
:) (Panchayats are the rural local authorities in India, just like
Municipalities - the urban thing.) My course is just finished.

I developed this thing, on a Debian GNU/Linux Etch system using GRASS GIS,
PostgreSQL with PostGIS, Quantum GIS, UMN MapServer, ka-Map etc. Coded in
MapScript and php. All are Free/Open Source things.

I want to expand this to the entire district with some added query modules,
such as shortest route to a place, maximum coverage for some areas, flood
risk analysis etc, to make it a complete plan-development support system.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Consumer Centric Tools and Interfaces

2008-08-22 Thread Wilfred L. Guerin
An issue that has come up frequently is the lack of simplified
interfaces for consumer and common public access to imaging sources
for common uses.

An obvious use is the correlation and processing of all available
imaging sources including surface density / landsat and reflectivity
for modeling small farms or watersheds.

What tools exist that have an over-simplified interface (or script)
that can export common data types, especially 3d, and pull appropriate
data from all possible sources transparently?

Also, semi-urban environments (esp. suburb residential) have a popular
need to explore their area as well as common road/infrastructure
maintenance awareness.

Obviously, keyhole and worldwind are horridly deficient, NGiA is
absolutely useless, and ESA/etc have gotten worse than better.

What suggestions can be made for common home users, what tools are
available, and what methods are most easily understood?

We have discussed large terrascaped structures which are removed from
nasa data as man made such as the distinct landsat echo around 7.2N
-71.1W as an introduction to sensor data processing, but there are few
comprehensive tutorials for common education.

Please let me know directly of specific tools or systems or info
[EMAIL PROTECTED] if this would not be relevant to common use
tools such as OSGEO/etc.

What tools are available?

I've done it for MOSS4G and #moss4g channel (I understood I have to

Yes, the group registration took some time and was very manual, but
cornering one of the admins online really helped :)

I don't see any benefit, personally, to having a registered group
managing all the OSGeo project channels as well. Since #osgeo is really
the main one tied to an organisation. The main benefit is that no one
can officially take over control of your channel for some reason, but if
you've registered the channel already, then you already have full control.

Tyler,

I also that main benfit of registration is to prevent hijacking of IRC
channel.

If you ever end up being concerned and don't want to risk anything, then
rename your channel to include the #osgeo- prefix, e.g. #osgeo-moss4g.
A few local chapter groups are already doing this e.g. #osgeo-fr #osgeo-es.

Does it mean if I create #osgeo- prefixed channel it's automagically
added to the list of registered OSGeo channels?

Best regards,
