RE: [OSGeo-Discuss] web services in agriculture

2009-02-18 Thread Jachym Cepicky
Hi Dirk and others,

thanks for the hints. Actually, I was not looking after stand-alone
applications, but after OGC or W3C web services, which are used in
forestry and agriculture.

For example public WMS/WCS/WFS with some maps, is there any public WPS
available? Any implementation of Inspire services, used in agriculture?
I found some FAO webservices
http://www.fao.org/faoterm/nocs/pages/WEBSERVICES-en.htm And examples
like this.

Thanks for the hints I got so far.

2009-02-18 Thread Roald de Wit
Hi Jimmy,

Can you confirm that you did receive the emails from both Cameron
Shorter and Wayne Tinlin in reply to your previous posting?

The email below seems to suggest that you might not have received/seen
them.

Dear All, this is following my message sent earlier regarding the above.

Please be advised that I m looking for trainers located close to Papua New
Guinea, ideally Australia and New Zealand or Asian countries. However, I
will be seeking trainers outside the region should I have difficulties
identifying trainers in the region.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a GIS officer working with the Papua New Guinea National Agricultural
Research Institute (NARI). We are currently developing a project proposal
for the Asia Caribbean Pacific Scientific and Technology programme under the
EU project. The key objective is to strengthen capacity in the organization
some specialized and general research areas. Under this project we will be
seeking potential GIS Trainers to improve our GIS capacity in NARI and two
other Ministries in Vanuatu and Solomon Islands. The training will include a
beginners and advanced GIS approach using Open Source.

Please advice.

Roger,

This code was removed from GDAL trunk because a bit of it was derived
directly from header files of the ODA libraries and so it was not
properly licensed as open source. As of a year or two ago I believe
it worked within the limited scope of what it was supposed to do - which
was to export "simple features" DWG files from OGR datasources.

Feel free to use the code, but keep in mind that the license
provenance is flawed, though not necessarily insurmountable so.

I'm not sure that this forum is the best place for additional discussion
on technical details.

Best regards,

[OSGeo-Discuss] Deadline for Annual Report

2009-02-18 Thread Tyler Mitchell (OSGeo)
Hi, I'm hoping for a March 6th deadline for the Annual Report
submissions.

This email is a follow up from the earlier note (below) and also
cc:'ing those listed as primary contact on the Annual Report wiki page:

http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Annual_Report_2008

We're ready to start receiving annual reports. I would like to have
all the reports in the next 3 weeks, sooner if at all possible.
Please let me know if this is impossible for you, otherwise the
deadline is March 6th.

I have posted a template to follow:
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Annual_Report_Template

You are welcome to add much more to your article than the template
describes, but please follow the formatting notes in that wiki page.
If you are not using the wiki to submit your report, please follow
this style as best as possible in the rendered HTML. Ultimately, it
will be imported into LaTeX and the more consistent the inputs are,
the easier it will be to handle.

I've named the page, for consistency, where your report will reside.
Please do not alter it unless absolutely necessary. If you are not
able to edit the wiki for whatever reason, you can email your report
to me directly (wiki or text formatting preferred).

I'm looking forward to learning much more about all the local
chapter, project and committee work that happen last year and being
able to share this with others are just as interested.

Best wishes,
Tyler

Hi everyone,
The 2007 OSGeo Annual Report[1] was a great success and it's time
to do it all again. I started up a wiki page listing the primary
contacts for each project, committee, chapter and sponsor:

http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Annual_Report_2008

If you are involved with one and see that the wrong person is
named, or someone is missed, could you please let me know. I will
send out more information to each of the main contacts shortly.
Also, if you are interested in helping to prepare/collect or format
the entries for the compilation, let me know. You will get credit
as a section Editor for that issue of the Journal :) I learned a
lot compiling last years and it should go much smoother this time
around.

The annual report is the main reporting venue for OSGeo projects,
committees and local chapters. It's the opportunity for newcomers,
potential sponsors and users in general to see, in one location,
where things have been moving. It is also valuable as a record of
history for the organisation, so I hope we can make it another
great one.

You can see the 2007 report (and previous OSGeo Journal issues) here:

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Generic Geometry Library (ggl)

2009-02-18 Thread Bart van den Eijnden (OSGIS)

Hi Barend,

"The performance of the library is compared with other C++ OS GIS
libraries and we measured that the library seems to be much faster than
most of them, caused by the template approach. "

Do you have any more details on this performance study? Which libraries
(GEOS?, ...) did you compare to, and how much speed improvement was
there in your test cases?

Best regards,
Bart

Barend Gehrels wrote:

Dear list,

It is a pleasure for us to announce the Generic Geometry Library (ggl).

It is an Open Source library, written in C++. The library is template
based, and generic. With generic we mean that the algorithms work not
only with the provided geometries, but also with geometries that are
defined by the library user, such as legacy points, custom
linestrings, etc.

Because of this the library is following OGC conventions loosely, not
strictly. All algorithms are implemented as standalone functions,
instead of methods on geometries. Nevertheless, OGC conventions, names
and meanings are followed as much as possible. Not all OGC algorithms
are already implemented. On the other hand the library offers other
things such as distance calculations over the globe.

So it is a library modelled as the C++ std:: library and as most Boost
libraries are. The library is proposed to Boost (Boost is a well-known
peer reviewed C++ Library Collection). It is following the Boost
Software License, which is a permissive Open Source License.

The library is accessible via SVN at Boost:
https://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/sandbox/ggl but can also be downloaded
from http://geometrylibrary.geodan.nl. Much documentation and many
examples can be found there. Note for example the Custom Linestring
example showing things which cannot so easily be done with
non-template libraries.

The library contains projections from PROJ4, converted to C++ . We
first wanted to include PROJ4 as an example, like we did with ShapeLib
and GD. However, we concluded that they fit better being implemented
as C++ templates, so they are automatically converted (it is
reproducable). Like there is a PROJ4 Javascript branch, this might be
considered as a PROJ4 C++ branch. We like your opinion about this.

The library is in "preview 4", it has been submitted as preview to
Boost three times, last year. Based on many comments the library has
been enhanced. We think it is now in a proper shape to be used, and
that algorithms can now be added without that everything is
restructured again.

The performance of the library is compared with other C++ OS GIS
libraries and we measured that the library seems to be much faster
than most of them, caused by the template approach.

We welcome any type of comment, opinion or cooperation.
