[OSGeo-Discuss] good luck to the NY code sprinters!

2010-02-19 Thread Bart van den Eijnden
I would like to thank everyone attending the NY code sprint (from tomorrow -
tuesday) for their time and hard work. This is one of the greatest initiatives,
and it's a shame I cannot attend.

Good luck to everyone, and I look forward to the outcomes, and I will try and
watch progress through the various systems (blog, Trac etc.).

Best regards,
Bart___

RE: [OSGeo-Discuss] How to use DXF and GeoTools?

2010-02-19 Thread Landon Blake
Tomas,

This type of question would be better for the Geotools user or developer
mailing list:

http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOTOOLS/Mailing+Lists

I don't remember Geotools having direct support for DXF. Perhaps one of the
Geotools programmers can respond. Otherwise, I would ask on the Geotools
mailing list.

I know that OpenJUMP has a couple of DXF import plug-ins, so you could look at
that source code. You might also check out the open source Java library for DXF
files named Kabeja:

http://kabeja.sourceforge.net/

Kabeja doesn't directly support conversion of DXF entities to a simple feature
representation, but this could be done with some work. If you decide to use
Kabeja to create simple GIS features, please let me know. This is something I
am interested in implementing and we might be able to work together on a simple
library. If Geotools doesn't already have something similar I would be willing
to submit it for approval as a module.

Hi folks!

i've been completed my subscription few minutes ago in order to ask about DXF
and GeoTools.

I would like to develop a GIS which gets DXF and manage this with differents
objects.
I would like to use GeoTools, but I don't know how to load a DXF into a Java
Object.

Is that possible with GeoTools? How can I do that?

I'm grateful for some key or solution.

Thx

[OSGeo-Discuss] GeoMOOSE 2.2 Released!

2010-02-19 Thread Brian Fischer
This version provides exciting new features that users have been requesting.
Some new features to GeoMOOSE 2.2 include:

 * New website with more documentation and a redesigned gallery
 * Implementation of Trac to submit bug and enhancement tickets
 * New layer types such as Bing Maps, Google Maps, Yahoo Maps, OpenStreetMap
tiles and ArcGIS Server Rest services
 * A new demo application to highlight the additional layer types in a Web
Mercator projection
 * Enhancements to the selection/buffer services and ability to download
selection results
 * Bug fixes to the geocode and popup services
 * Addition of a feature report service
 * Addition of a query builder service
 * Addition of a user extensions framework to add your own code to GM without
modifying the core libraries, an example of this is a dynamic zoom service
 * Addition of custom cursors and scale bars
 *   More catalog presentation options

Please visit the gallery http://www.geomoose.org/gallery oto see what users
have been using GeoMOOSE for or to submit your own application. You can also
visit the live demo from the main website link at the top of the page. GeoMOOSE
(www.geomoose.org) is an open source web application
framework for displaying geographic data. What makes GeoMOOSE unique is it
provides an out-of-the-box solution that makes it easy for non-developers to
create web-mapping applications with typical tools such as navigate, search,
measure and print. Non-developers only need to be comfortable with
configuration files. GeoMOOSE has a number of strengths including modularity,
configurability, and delivers a number of core functionalities in its packages.
The project has targeted local government business cases to distribute land
records information, but many other users have used it for much more. Since
GeoMOOSE is open source project it built on other popular open source projects
such as OpenLayers (www.openlayers.org) and
MapServer (www.mapserver.org). To get started with
GeoMOOSE, simply go to the download page and install the software demo.

We are excited to see the inception of this project go from a an application
developed by the City of St. Paul, MN to FGDC CAP grant to a robust open source
software project used by hundreds of people across the world in the last 3
years. We hope you find the investment made by all the developers a resource
to the GIS community. We are excited to see this project grow and we envision
continued growth as more and more users find it. We welcome feedback on the
GeoMOOSE project and hope you give the software a try.

Hi mailman-admin,

is there a possibility to integrate our OSGeo-specific mailing lists at
the http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo table?
Because the OSGeo local chapter of the german language countries (OSGeo
D-A-CH/FOSSGIS) run there own listserver we are not listed at the
automatically generated http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo
Our lists are all OSGeo-specific but in German and connected to the
activities of lc D-A-CH. For a german speaking person it might be very
helpful to find those lists at the OSGeo listing and for me it doesn't
make sense to not have them listed there, just because they are not
running on the one specific server.

Our lists-listing (?) can be found at
http://lists.fossgis.de/mailman/listinfo - may be we should add English
descriptions either.

Best regards

Marco Lechner

Thank you very much for the interest.
1)Here is the scenario:
I work with enviromental services.
I use GRASS+QGIS on windows.
Small amount of data.
Over high resolution sat images I draw vectors for some planning, the vectors
have a lot of atributes.
Those vectors have dayli updates.

2)What I want:
Make my work easily avaliable for my teanmates over the internet, so they can
visualise and query the vectors for the atributes.

I look for a server that is easy to configure and that have some tools like
zoom, pan and query.
And the server must show always the latest updates made in the vectors (should
I put the vectors in postgis?).

Thanks again.
Pablo.

RE: [OSGeo-Discuss] Comparison

2010-02-19 Thread Rafal Wawer
Dear Stefan and Andrea,
The evaluation method was included in our training - both within CASCADOSS
regional workshops and summer courses organized by SADL for the participants
from developing countries. It aims at assessing ordinary - let's say
"middle-level" users to find an Open Source alternative to proprietary tools
they use. Our experiences proved that in case of technical potential that
"middle-level" should be a bit higher, as both finding the detailed technical
features of the software in the documentation or by hands-on is far more
difficult.

As for the evaluation we performed in CASCADOSS.
>From my experience in FOSS4G documentation and evaluation - some of the
>projects were really poorly documented and sometimes looking for information
>required quite extensive research. What we could not find, we tried to figure
>out by hands-on experience or, in case of very incomplete documentation -
>direct communication with project leaders or communities.

In CASCADOSS we put a huge effort to document and evaluate the software in
aspect of applications in environmental domain aiming at further teaching of
environmental NGOs, administration and companies what are strengths and
weaknesses and providing them with method of finding the tool they need. None
of the software tools was preferred - we had a general rule to remain
objective. There was not much space for subjective interpretation anyway - the
evaluation was based upon documentation of the SW project and hands-on
experience, as well as secondary opinions or benchmarks. We all have put equal
pressure on each of the software projects we evaluated, to assure the true
comparability between them. IMO contacting the communities asking for a review
of the result was in contradiction to the goal of the evaluation as designed to
being performed by ordinary GIS users based on available (documentation) or
discoverable (hands-on) information. On the other hand sending the evaluation
results to projects' leaders or communities would certainly raised awareness
about the method and results in the FOSS4G community...

I exercised the evaluation with the students of our Summer School on FOSS4G in
2008 and 2009 editions and the results for Quantum GIS throughout 2 years
improved, but remained consistent with the previous evaluation from late 2007.
We tested only technical potential, but I think during last 2 years the
documentations of FOSS4G improved a lot, so also remaining two potentials will
get higher scores for some of the projects. There are new standards addressing
spatial web services appearing on the market, hence also the list of web
mapping functions and desktop clients' features should certainly be extended.

The project was financed by the 6th Framework programme of the EU and only
thanks' to this financing we were able to spend so much time and resources and
eveluate so broad range of software projects. The project ended in April 2009
and I guess much criticism may be drawn about financed projects here - what is
happening with the deliverables after project's end? Maybe we did not put
enough effort to disseminate the results: one paper on 4th gvSIG Conference,
few posters on conferences and 1 paper to be published in vol. 6th of the OSGeo
Journal - a short report from CASCADOSS International Workshop and Symposium
held in June 2008 under the patronage of OSGeo Foundation. I bet other
CASCADOSS partners can add much to the disseminaiton history.
I guess we rather focused on reaching end users in our regions to raise the
awareness of the FOSS4G. CASCADOSS is currently continued by one of CASCADOSS
partners - Adam Podolcsak and his company Compet-Terra who was very active in
promoting the Open Source in Hungary. He initiated the CASSCADOSS Association
and continues to produce the CASCADOSS LiveDVD, which we use in our trainings
on FOSS4G and there is a possibility it will used in some testbeds in the
future. We are looking for the opportunity for a follow-up project - I think
there is no better place as OSGeo to create a consortium for that (-: but we d
not see the opportunity within the calls that appear at the moment.

You can find more information on the CASCADOSS international website:
www.cascadoss.eu, the website of CASCADOSS Association at Compet_Terra:
http://cascadoss.competterra.com/cascadoss.php?home_en and upcoming paper
containing a short report on CASCADOSS international events held in June 2008
in Warsaw: discussions on license issues, business models, GMES as well as a
SWAT analysis guided by Markus Neteler and Mateusz Loskot - Guys, again many
thank's for your extremely valuable contribution in Warsaw!

I must say, that I got several mails asking why the particular software project
got lower score. Noone from high ranks complained (-; In case of GeoServer I
guess there is an eternal race to be the best in the market.(-;
I encourage you to make an evaluation using CASCADOSS form
