We'd wanted to take more students but unfortunately that isn't
possible. For those of you who didn't get a selected we'd like to
invite you to participate in the summer anyway. If you let us know
that you intend to work on your project we're more than pleased to
help you out! Even if you won't get the Google stipend you will get
lots of experience and some very good contacts for the future. I, and
(I'm sure other mentors as well) would be happy to write letters of
recommendation to any student who complete their work, with or without
a Google sponsored contract.
If you do it without a slot you will have more freedom, but a plan is
still a very good idea since it will help you finish.

If you are curious to see what projects OSGeo is doing this year, go
over to our home page in Melange[1] and have a look. The project plans
will be detailed and wiki pages will be set up for the students within
the near future, but the accepted project abstracts should be publicly
visible.

Thank you again, all students who applied and thank you to mentors for
evaluating over 50 good proposals and selecting the top 10 slots.

I will be sending further instructions to students and mentors later
this week, for now, relax, and get to know your Student/Mentor(s).

The summer is on!

[OSGeo-Discuss] Place & Time - Establishing an Open Source GIS Software Interest Group, Calgary Alberta

2010-04-26 Thread Stefan Steiniger

sorry for cross postings
===
Dear Colleague,

If you are interested in Open Source GIS software and live in the
Calgary area - this might be of interest for you.

We have now closed the poll
(http://www.doodle.com/participation.html?pollId=5c4hn45w98mcga3g) and
have set a date for our first meeting. The goal is to form a Free and
Open Source GIS interest group.

When?
* Thursday *29th April 2010* (so, this week!)
*  from 6pm; at max until 8pm

Where?
* Main campus of the University of Calgary, Science B Room 105
* for a map, see: http://www.ucalgary.ca/map/node/131 - and select "SB -
Science B" from the building dropdown and type "105" for the room
number, or as image http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/File:CampusUofC.png
* you can take the C-Train Line to the North-West, and exit at
University Station (which is east of the campus)

Possible Agenda:
i - What is the OSGeo?
ii - Get to know each other.
iii - Define a purpose for the group.
iv - Pizza? Beer?

For point (iii) it would be helpful if you could think about the
following questions:

- Why are you coming?
- What would you expect from such a group?
- What do you not want the group to be?
- What is your experience with free and open source GIS?

best regards,
Stefan and Andrew

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Batch database geocoding

2010-04-26 Thread Dan Putler
Hi Revel,

Do you have underlying data layers with which to geocode (say TIGER/Line
for the US or NRN or RNF for Canada)? Do you want the software local to
your machine, or will a web service work?

If you have data layers and you want to do it locally, look at PAGC:
www.pagcgeo.org You likely will want the older command line version of
the software, which is available in the pagc_old folder, which is
located at http://sourceforge.net/projects/pagc/files/

If you are doing this for the US, and don't mind a web based service,
take a look at your cross-town rival's site:
https://webgis.usc.edu/Services/Geocode/

[OSGeo-Discuss] Batch database geocoding

2010-04-26 Thread Revel Sims
Hello,
I was referred to this list for a question i had regarding batch database
geocoding. Basically, i want to geocode a database of approximately 90,000
addresses. I can do this on ArcMap, but since i dont own the software, and
understandably dont want to pay for it, i was wondering if anyone here knows
of any freely available applications that enable a user to do carry out such
a task. In addition to geocoding, i would like to eventually do some
spatial analysis based on these points. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you.

Your "URL" there doesn't have a : -- it just says "http//", which is invalid.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Illegal Request to Geoserver ?

Hello to all,

I am following the online instructions of OSGeo's Leveraging OGC Services

I have the following setup:
Geoserver on localhost:8080
Apache server on localhost
Working proxy in OpenLayers.ProxyHost = "

I am making a WFS request through GeoExt+Openlayers from my localhost to the

I would guess it has to do with the prox.cgi (which I got from the ol site)
because there is one line of code which says: print "Illegal request."
Exactly my error message in the response body.

... but what does it mean ?

I tried the proxy in other situations and it works.

Anyone has any ideas ? They are deeply , deeply appreciated.

Thanks, João

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] New installer - Release GeoNetwork opensource v2.4.3

2010-04-26 Thread Yves Jacolin
Jeroen, all,

The website seems down for me or too long to get an answer from it. Is it a
known problem?

Thanks,

Y.

[OSGeo-Discuss] New installer - Release GeoNetwork opensource v2.4.3

2010-04-26 Thread Jeroen Ticheler
Dear all,
This morning I uploaded a new installer file replacing the one I uploaded on
Saturday. The only change is that this installer should be running properly
with Java 1.5 and higher. The first one had an incompatibility issue for Java
1.5 which has been resolved now.
Kind regards,
Jeroen
