Huge +1 from me as well. Kate has trained countless people (who have
trained countless others) in leveraging open source and open data through
her work with the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap team.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Funded projects using FOSS4G tools with respect to water management

2014-07-25 Thread andrea antonello
I will add one more, quite focused toolset: The nettools plugins for uDig.

The Nettools plugins enable uDig for analyses of both water management
systems and storm water networks. It has been used in Italy for
professional works and also in developing countries as for example
Rwanda and Ethiopia.

Their home is here: https://bitbucket.org/moovida/nettools/wiki/Home

It is supported by HydroloGIS and the C.U.D.A.M. of the University of
Trento, Faculty of Engineering (http://web.unitn.it/en/cudam).

Some docs:
http://jgrasstechtips.blogspot.com/search/label/nettools
http://www.slideshare.net/moovida/strumenti-open-source-per-la-gestione-delle-reti-urbane

The simplest way to install it is on windows through the osgeo for
windows installer: http://download.osgeo.org/osgeo4w/osgeo4w-setup.exe

Hi dear cro,

I would like to nominate Marie Silvestre as a Charter Member for OSGeo.
Marie does not have the chance to be able to travel to every and each FOSS4G,
but she is for long a strong advocate of FOSS4G.

She is a research engineer in GIS for the CNRS at Pierre and Marie Curie
University since 2006, its main work focus on water quality modelling of large
watersheds.

She initiated and performed the complete redesign and recoding of the model
she works on to use only Opensource GIS. She makes a great job at promoting
the use of FOSS in GIS among researchers and students in the university and
gives twice a year a 4-days training course on GIS with QGIS and GRASS.

She has been an early enthusiast for OSGeo and its Francophone Local Chapter
and has been an active member of translation projects such as the OSGeo
website and Journal.

Since then she became the unique and coordinator of the French translation
team for QGIS documentation and website, hard work.

As he did such an awesome job as chair of FOSS4G last year in Nottingham,
it goes without saying that I, and I'm sure the rest of the program
committee if they were charter members, second Steven's nomination
wholeheartedly. I have known Steven for a number of years, and while he may
not always have been a proponent of open source GIS, once he "saw the

his calibre on board!

You can't avoid stupid people bullying candidates. That said, at least from

are not many more females on this side it is just because there are no

Can't agree more.

You still can find (even young!) people that thinks it is not an education
but a biological difference. But at least my experience says otherwise.

I am not sure society is getting better. In the '80, Lego made ads for
girls using normal Lego toys:
http://testdb.msmagazine.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Lego-ad.jpg
Now we have Lego princess:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=legos+princess&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Alegos+princess

But that is in our hands to change. In kids, not in OsGeo charter
nominations.

Forgive my ignorance but, has OsGeo some kind of program or plan to go to
schools? Because I am planning to go next year to Universities to give
talks and I would like to go also to schools, so it would be helpful if I
have some background here.

Same for me!

I appreciate Andrea both for his technical contributions (especially
GeoPaparazzi and JGrass), and for his musical talent :)

Best!
Anne

With my statistician hat on here, I have to point out that this is
what we call "a biased sample". Not that the individuals are biased
themselves, but the group is necessarily going to be made up of, lets
say, "satisfied customers".

For every Jo there may be a dozen Janes who tried to contribute to
OSGeo, found it an unwelcoming place, and quietly left with no
complaint or fuss. Complaining about bullying and harrassment can be
very difficult, and especially in a voluntary group many will just get
on with their real jobs, not seeing any great loss to themselves in
not being part of it. This contrasts with harrassment/bullying at
work, where there is greater necessity to speak out, and, one would
hope, there are established complaints procedures and a helpful union
to argue for you.

Personally I think the gender imbalance in tech springs from the day
baby girls are first dressed in pink and given dolls and baby boys
dressed in blue and given toy guns. I'm hopeful that society is
getting better - although slowly. "Teach your children well" as Crosby
Stills and Nash did sing...

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] [Election 2014] Nomination for Andrea Antonello

2014-07-25 Thread Silvia Franceschi
Even if I am not a charter member, I would like to second the nomination of
Andrea.
Probably the most famous project he is developing is Geopaparazzi, but I
would like to remember that he also did some important development of
scientific tools. Andrea is the main developer of JGrasstools (
http://moovida.github.io/jgrasstools/) a library of scientific modules for
environmental analysis and NetTools (
https://bitbucket.org/moovida/nettools/wiki/Home) a set of tools for water
management in urban areas.
He is now working on the development of tools for LiDAR analysis that will
be integrated in JGrassTools.

+1 for me

Silvia
