+1 for FOSS4G may this inspire a multitude as it has always. FOSS4G is the
brand of OSGeo Conference for sure.

Please wait for a while until those videos have been restored.

2015-10-13 Thread Andrea Ross

Dear Everyone,

(x-posted to LocationTech & OSGeo discussion lists, please fwd to any
who might be interested)

For those that are interested, this Thursday is FedGeoDay 2015
.

FedGeoDay 2015 features a really great line-up of speakers from
Government and Industry. Participating will introduce you to a number of
powerful and easy to use tools, show you what you can do with them, and
walk through how and why government agencies are using them to
dramatically improve their mapping, cartography, and GIS projects.

Just in case you might need a scholarship pass, you can apply for one
here .

Hope to see some of you there!

Kind regards,

Andrea

p.s. We'd be grateful for any help you can offer to spread the word
about this event, thank you so much!

[OSGeo-Discuss] Branding FOSS4G

2015-10-13 Thread Andy Anderson
Slightly different topic: brand names are usually protected by trademark; I
don’t see that FOSS4G is in the US trademark system:

http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=searchss&state=4801:p4nq75.1.1

Should it be? Could it be, or is there already too much non-OSGeo use? For that
matter, I don’t see OSGeo there, either.

If brands aren’t protected, they could be used / co-opted by other
organizations / corporations.

So what would be the problem with something like «FOSS4G: The OSGeo
conference»?

Wouldn't that compromise solution make everybody happy?

2015-10-13 Thread María Arias de Reyna
Hi,

Another reason *not* to change the name: if it is called the OSGeo
conference, non-OSGeo software or companies will feel rejected and don't
want to come. I find it very refresh to be able to discuss non-OSGeo but
FOSS4G things in this kind of conferences.

María.

OSGeo is The organisation to support the collaborative development of
open source geospatial software, and promote its widespread use. [1]

To promote its widespread use OSGeo started, amongst other things, to
organise a yearly conference. Today, there is the global conference, and
a lot of local conferences, almost every month, somewhere in the world.

FOSS4G is the name of The OSGeo Conference.
FOSS4G is an *important* brand of OSGeo.
Local conferences have derived names like FOSS4G Europe, FOSS4G North
America, FOSS4G.be, FOSSGIS ...

Hi Jeff, all,

> Thanks Mori-san, I fully agree with you, there is no need to rename anything.

I might have another perspective - seen from the (at least the Danish)
commercial side of things. When attending a conference, the value
would often be assessed by looking at the name of the conference.

Let us for instance say that the big fictive geospatial company,
"FTSJ", hosts an "FTSJ conference". You would attend if you are a
client of FTSJ. Let us then say that FTSJ only has a byline in the:
"'The Fabulous Geo Conference' *cough cough* brought to you by FTSJ".
Then FTSJ is not the subject of the conference, but the host. People
using the competing products of InfoMap or even the free and open
alternative Minor GIS would be more likely to attend. Because it is
not an FTSJ-conference, it is a fabulous conference on geo!

I think that to (at least Danish) executives, and especially in public
admin, FOSS4G sounds better than the "annual conference of some
organization that I am not even a member of".
No one is in doubt that it is an OSGeo hosted conference, and even if
they were - only the blind and deaf would not see or hear that it is
during the conference itself.

Cheers,

Greg
