[OSGeo-Discuss] New Maps Plus - Online Mapping Education for a New Era of Maps

2016-08-17 Thread UK New Maps Plus Certificate
Greetings from the University of Kentucky Department of Geography!
Are you interested in web mapping? Check out the online Graduate Certificate
in Digital Mapping program at the University of Kentucky - we can help take
your GIS career to the next level. While there are a full range of courses, we
recommend experienced GIS professionals begin with MAP 672 - Programming for
Web Mapping.
In addition to MAP 672, we will also be offering MAP 671 - Intro to New
Mapping
(focusing on a desktop GIS workflow for web production) as well as MAP 673 -
Design for Interactive Web Mapping.
MAP 672 introduces students to JavaScript, HTML and CSS and is perfect for
those who have work experience in desktop GIS, but have not yet begun web
mapping. If this describes you, please email
us so we can review
your experience and consider an advanced enrollment.
All of these courses are offered completely online and are part of the New
Maps Plus Graduate Certificate (11 credits). More details are available at the
program's webpage or Facebook
page.
Designed with all levels of experience in mind, the New Maps Plus program at
the University of Kentucky offers an unparalleled online learning experience.
Applications for the session beginning
October 10th are due September 25th, 2016. Please contact us with any questions
or suggestions.
 Best,

Matthew Zook, Ph.D.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] CoverageJSON

2016-08-17 Thread Bruce Bannerman
Thanks Jachym.

I can also see the potential of this format.

I like the potential for tying in the Observations and Measurements Observed
Property with associated community agreed definitions to the coverage. This has
been a missing piece of the puzzle for some time.

I understand that Jon and his team would welcome collaboration to further test
and develop the format.

I expect that Jon will respond when he gets back off his holiday.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Fotosession Bonn - Foundation officers and Board of Directors

2016-08-17 Thread Dirk Frigne
Dear list,

For my presentation next week, I want to add a photo of all the current
Foundation officers of OSGeo 2016. [1]

I know this is almost impossible, and that is exactly the reason why I
think we (OSGeo) can manage. So this is my proposal:

Can everybody from this list, who is in Bonn at Tuesday evening 23/8 at
18:25 just before the Official Reception of the City of Bonn be there
for a short photo-session?

If you are *not* in Bonn, can you send me a picture I can use in the
presentation?
I prepared a wiki page 'Official OSGeo Officers photo-session Bonn 2016'
[2]. Please add your name to the list if you will manage to be there, or
if not, put your name on the list indicating you send me a picture I can
use.

Thanks in advance and have fun!

Dirk

Hi Bruce and Jon,

I went through the spec, and I like it in general (not that it would be so
important)

JSON usage is certainly still growing, so is size of the data. Are you guys
using the CoverageJSON in some application already? I like the metadata
verbosity, and overall readiness for international environment.

Have you been thinking about data compression too? For raster data, this
could be key issue IMHO.

good luck

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Geo4All - Empowering academics and educators globally - requesting colleagues to share Geo4All ideas at Geography Awareness Week

2016-08-17 Thread Munich Orientation Convention

Hello Brian,

thank you for the confirmation that MOC isn’t (and shouldn’t be) free and open.
Therefore: OSGeo decisions actually are taken in absence of representatives of
the inventor and the consumer, consequently can change when the wind changes.

My last approach concerned ideas to the Geo Awareness Week, that means, for
young consumers. A similar situation: adults decide about writing, publishing
and buying books for children.

In Bonn there will a speech about free, open and libre. This shows that in some
cases openmania could be the wrong way.

The site “free the post code” www.freeThePostCode.org proves that even
enigmatic post codes aren’t free, therefore universities etc. promote it (by
unreflected use?). According to my surveys, nobody knows where is the N/S/E/W
transition point ( the pole ! ) in London.

I also wrote to the National Geographic and I’m sure that Geo Awareness and
open mind will overcome.

One possibility could be to amputate the invention to a free and open torso for
those who insist on saving EUR 1,- . Would this be of interest for OSGeo?

Henrique

Dear Colleagues -

I strongly object to this statement..

therefore not something OSGEO shoudl be involved with... "

There are numerous references to cite here.. details on request

This implies there is also a (higher?) non-educational fee, and also means IMHO
that this system can NOT be considered OPEN in the usual definition and is
therefore not something OSGEO shoudl be involved with...

2016-08-17 Thread Christian Willmes

Brian,

I would second Barends claim, that this can not be considered as open.

For me this looks like the following:

1. Someone claims intellectual property rights on some formalized idea.

2. This someone now promotes and sells this idea for a fee.

Please help me on how this approach can be considered as open? Hint [1],
[2].

Thanks,

Christian

2016-08-17 Thread Venkatesh Raghavan

Dirk, Arnulf,

Thanks for following up about the AGM.
I will be available to moderate the session.

I also request Local chapter representatives, PSC members
and others to add their names to the AGM page [1] and
make a short presentation about their activities.

Venka,
thanks for starting this! It would be great if somebody from the board
would volunteer to moderate the session. I am happy to help out but
would prefer someone official to lead this session.

All,
please add your name to the agenda and prepare a couple of slides (or
even consider talking freely) highlighting what your OSGeo project,
local chapter or initiative did in the last year. This is always a great
inspiration for others even old honks like me because there is such an
amazing diversity of things going on around Open Source geospatial.

Looking forward to see many of you next week in Bonn!

Have fun,
