Hi OSGEO,

Members of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation play a crucial role in
the Canadian geomatics ecosystem.

There's an important online event on the upcoming modernization of the
Canadian Spatial Reference System (CSRS), scheduled for March 27th.
Presented by Catherine Robin of the Canadian Geodetic Service. This
webinar is a part of Lidar CANEX 2024.

Such modernizations are rare, occurring approximately every 50 to 100
years. For the first time since the widespread adoption of GNSS
technology, we're transitioning to a unified reference system across
federal and provincial governments.

Please share this invitation with your members. This is a free online
event. Your members will appreciate being informed about this
significant change.

[OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo Budget 2024

2023-11-21 Thread Angelos Tzotsos via Discuss

Dear OSGeo committees,

OSGeo is proud to support our committees (including project steering
committees), initiatives, and a growing number of projects. We have been
pleased to see funding applied to day to day operations, improvements
and a wide range of community building activities including events, code
sprints, developer meetings and user conferences.

Our continued ability to offer financial support is due a successful
FOSS4G 2023 and the generosity of our ongoing sponsors.

OSGeo Committees

To plan our 2024 budget, we are reaching out to all OSGeo committees to
help plan for the year ahead.

As our budget forecasting includes communicating with sponsors we ask
you to list any sponsorship opportunities you are aware of for 2024. We
know that it can be difficult to ask for money. Please be clear with
each sponsorship opportunity, and the visibility benefit you are able to
offer sponsors.

Example:
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/SAC:Budget#2023

OSGeo Projects

Each year we are pleased to welcome new graduated projects to OSGeo. The
Board starts planning by providing a set amount to all graduated
projects who have:

1. Reported to the Board their activities of the last 12 months (e.g.
during the AGM or directly to a Board meeting); and

2. Have sent a budget request.

While we have not determined the amount for 2024, last year each project
was provided a $1000 USD operational budget. Funding allows each project
committee to plan ahead, and support their team activities without
hesitation.

Keep in mind that if any unforeseen event occurs during the year we are
here to support you. Project teams have approached the board during the
course of a year to respond to security vulnerabilities, or request
legal advice, that was not anticipated during budget planning.

Projects with a more specific plan (to pursue a clear goal) are welcome
to send a more detailed budget. Larger goals should be presented as
clear sponsorship opportunities to your community, and OSGeo will do our
best to help out also.

Tip: Keep in mind OSGeo goals as an organization. We love to support
community participation, for example attending the AGM or a
cross-project code sprint.

Examples:

https://github.com/geotools/geotools/wiki/GeoTools-2024-Sponsorship-Opportunities
https://grasswiki.osgeo.org/wiki/GRASS_GIS_Budget_2023

OSGeo Community Projects

Projects working on incubation are asked to contact
incuba...@lists.osgeo.org to be included in the 2024 incubation budget
request.

Budget Meeting

To help navigate the uncertainties ahead in 2024, the Board will have a
budget meeting in December 2023 to review 2023 expenditures, sponsorship
and make financial decisions for the 2024 budget.

Please add your project info to the budget draft at:

https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Budget_2024

Budget requests should be submitted ideally by 20 December 2023 in
advance of our next Board meeting.

Angelos

Interested? So read more about why & where & when...

The Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) has a long tradition of
organizing code sprints for developers of Free and Open Source GIS
software.

Since 2009, the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) [4] has been
organizing a yearly Code Sprint of the "C Tribe" OSGeo projects, which
has evolved into a full OSGeo Community Sprint and all "Tribes" are
included/welcome. Leading developers of projects like GDAL, PostGIS,
MapServer, GeoServer, GRASS, QGIS, PDAL, pygeoapi and many more get
together to discuss new ideas, hack, decide, tackle large geospatial
problems & to have fun.

Our last face-to-face OSGeo Community Sprint was held with success in
Minnesota [5] in 2019.
In 2020, due to the pandemic, we canceled the Athens code sprint and
organized a virtual code sprint [6].
In 2021 and 2022 we organized code sprints during FOSS4G events and
joint code sprints with OGC and Apache Foundation.

2023 marks the return of the OSGeo Community Sprint which will return
to Europe after Vienna (2014)[7], Paris (2016) [8] and Bonn (2018)[9].
This makes it possible to embed European developers and users. The
tradition started in 2009 in Toronto [10]. Find a list of the history
of code sprints at [11].

About BiDS
--

BiDS brings together key actors from industry, academia, EU entities
and government to reveal user needs, exchange ideas and showcase
latest technical solutions and applications touching all aspects of
space and big data technologies, providing a unique opportunity to
discuss and present the most recent innovations and challenges
encountered in the context of big data from space. The 2023 edition of
BiDS will focus not only technologies enabling insight and foresight
inferable from big data from space. Together, we want to emphasize how
breakthrough space data driven technologies impact on society’s grand
challenges, such as climate change and the green transition.

The event, organized by the European Space Agency (ESA) [12] together
with the European Union Satellite Center (SatCen) [13] and the Joint
Research Center (JRC)[14], will take place at the Austria Center
Vienna [15], and counts with the support of the partners FFG [16],
Austria in Space [17] and the Federal Ministry Republic of Austria [18].

OSGeo Community Sprint 2023 in Vienna
-
The international code sprint of the OSGeo will take place from 6 to 9
November 2023. We expect about 60 developers from all over the world
to come from various OSGeo projects [4].

The code sprint will take place at Austria Center Vienna [3] [15], as
part of the Big Data from Space 2023 (BiDS) [2] event.

Accommodations
-
Working zones will be created for you in the dedicated room area. A
wide variety of drinks and snacks will be provided by OSGeo and
sponsors. Participation in the code sprint is free of charge. As a
participant, you are responsible for your own accommodation.

Several hotels and apartments are close to the venue, many of which
are within walking distance.

Registering for the OSGeo Community Sprint

In order to register for the OSGeo Community Sprint you need to
register for the BiDS event [2]. More information about Big Data from
Space and the registration link once opened, can be found under
bigdatafromspace2023.org [2].

Afterwards, please don't forget to sign up in the OSGeo wiki at our
OSGeo Community Spint 2023 page:

https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Community_Sprint_2023#Participants

This is an important step for planning of catering and coordination.

The OSGeo Community Sprint is open to all who wish to participate in
one or more projects. There is always plenty to do – it’s not all
about programming. Translation, documentation, feedback, discussions,
testing – all this is also important for projects so everyone is
cordially

invited to attend the code sprint!

The Community Sprint Organizing Team is looking forward to seeing you
there!

If you have questions/comments/ideas please let us know.

number of project events, such as code sprints, developer meetings and
user conferences.

OSGeo continues to execute the annual budget, and is reaching out to all
committees (including Project Steering Committees), to help plan our
budget for 2023.

In 2022, the Board assigned an initial amount of 500 USD to all
graduated projects who have reported to the Board the activities of the

have sent a budget request.

to send a more detailed request for approval (see detailed budget
requests from 2022 e.g.
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/GeoServer_Budget_2022) A good idea is to

OSGeo would like to welcome our new OSGeo Charter Members 2021.

In 2021, we had 15 nominations and all were accepted. This year, 230
votes were casted. It was a lower number than last year (304 in 2020,
then 209 in 2019, 276 in 2018 for comparison). The OSGeo board
approved the new members in November 2021.

We are happy to announce that the following people were accepted as
OSGeo Charter Members:

Enock Seth Nyamador (2021) Ghana
Maia Williams (2021) Australia
John Duncan (2021) Australia
Amin Mobasheri (2021) Germany
Peter Rushforth (2021) Canada
Fernando Mino (2021) Ecuador
Julien Cabièces (2021) France
Loïc Bartoletti (2021) France
Ashish Kumar (2021) India
Stefan F. Keller (2021) Switzerland
Linda Kladivová (2021) Czech Republic
Nick Bearman (2021) UK
Adrien André (2021) France
Nicolas Rochard (2021) France
Malika Gunawardana (2021) Sri Lanka

We send a warm welcome to our new OSGeo Charter Members.

You find a list of all charter members [1].

OSGeo now has a total number of 497 members for 64 countries. Below is
a summary of our membership (you can access the interactive version [2]).

Thanks a lot to Anne Ghisla and Jorge Gustavo Rocha (2021 OSGeo
Elections CROs) for organizing the OSGeo Election 2021.

Now it is time for the OSGeo Board Election 2021. You find the
nominations [3] and the candidate manifestos [4].

Though it has a European focus, the information material there is very good can

[OSGeo-Discuss] Get ready for the OSGeo Annual Meeting 2021

2021-09-27 Thread Angelos Tzotsos via Discuss
OSGeo Annual General Meeting 2021 was published as a video in advance.
We hope to see you on 1 October 2021 14h UTC for the virtual event

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we again will have our Annual General
Meeting (AGM) virtually this year. It will be during FOSS4G 2021. We
would like to invite you to the AGM on Friday, October 1st 2021 from 14h
to 15h UTC [1]

We are happy to meet you at our global FOSS4G conference again, even
though it will be virtual, instead of face to face.

We have been active in advance and asked our community for short videos
about the status of their project. We are happy to be able to publish
the OSGeo Annual General Meeting video on the OSGeo YouTube channel [2].
It was amazing to get all the videos from local chapters, projects,
committees and initiatives. We hope we did not miss any video. A big
thanks to all the community members who provided a video and to Vicky
Vergara who mixed them all together.

Now you are invited to watch the AGM 2021 video in advance of our
meeting on Friday. If there are questions or topics for discussion we
can follow up on the Virtual AGM on Friday.

This year's OSGeo annual general meeting (AGM) is dedicated to the
memory of Malena Libman who passed away due to COVID-19. Her passing was
a big shock and we miss her. She was meant to be the chair of this
year's FOSS4G 2021 and she was a star of our community. Our thoughts and
prayers are with her family.

We would also like to dedicate to the memory of Martin Isenburg who
passed away after the editing of the AGM video. Martin was the creator
of LAStools, LASzip, and PulseWaves. He was a giant in the LIDAR
community. Our thoughts and prayers are also with his family.

Thank you to all people that contributed to the AGM and hope to see you
on 1 October 2021 14h UTC for the virtual event

We also would like to invite you to subscribe to our OSGeo youtube
channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDvJEf8hXbyeVqaYaS8sLvw

We hope we can change the name soon to:

[OSGeo-Discuss] Get ready for our OSGeo AGM 2021 virtual event on 1 October 2021 14h UTC

2021-07-28 Thread Angelos Tzotsos via Discuss

Hello OSGeo Community!

We would like to invite you to our Annual General Meeting (AGM) during
FOSS4G on Friday, October 1st 2021 from 14h to 15h UTC.

We are happy to meet you at our global FOSS4G conference again, even
though it will be virtual, instead of face to face.

For 2021, we are introducing a new concept. We would like to publish the
OSGeo annual update as a video, in advance of the AGM on the OSGeo
YouTube channel [1]. This way, we will have time for an open discussion
during the AGM slot at FOSS4G. Thus, all local chapters, projects,
committees and initiatives are invited to prepare a short video of *1
minute* to present their status report, updates, COVID-19 impact, future
plans and last year’s achievements.

We hope you like the idea! However, you have to get active in advance,
so please take a close look to the timeline below:

Timeline
- 2021-08-30: send us your video and update the AGM slides [2]
- 2021-09-10: AGM 2021 complete video will be published
- 2021-10-01: 11h Argentinian Time Zone (14:00 UTC) Join the AGM 2021
meeting at FOSS4G [3] [4]

Your AGM video is going to be one minute of fame and shine for our
community, so don't let it pass! It is important for all of us to know
what is happening everywhere. OSGeo is huge and this is the best way to
get a summary of all the amazing work we are doing!

Check this wiki page [5] for an overview of the AGM 2021 and for the
upload link for your video that we will soon provide. In the wiki, you
will find all the important information, but don’t hesitate to contact
us if you have any questions.

Please, don’t forget to also add your information to the AGM slides [2],
but make sure you use only one (or two) slides per team. If you want to
edit it and still don't have privileges to do so, please let us know and
tell us which team you represent so we can provide write access.

Spread the information about the AGM 2021 and save the date!
We hope to see as many of you at the AGM in October.

Stay safe,

Angelos Tzotsos

Dear OSGeo project members and committees,

Over the previous years, OSGeo has been proud to support a growing
number of project events, such as community/code sprints, developer
meetings, and user conferences. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,
most OSGeo events in 2020 were held as virtual events.

OSGeo is reaching out to all committees, including Project Steering
Committees, to help plan our budget for 2021.

In 2020, the Board assigned an initial amount of 2000 USD to all
graduated projects who have reported to the Board the last 12 months
(e.g. during the AGM or directly to a Board meeting). This year the
Board is planning to continue to offer a budget to all graduated
projects with the exact amount to be determined.

Due to cancellation of events in 2020, we are not in a position to
allocate and spend as much as we did in previous years.

To help navigate the uncertainties ahead in 2021, the Board is
planning to have a budget meeting on 18 January 2021 to review 2020
expenditures, sponsorship, and make financial decisions for the 2021
budget.

Please send your detailed requests for approval (see detailed budget
requests from 2020 e.g.
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/GeoServer_Budget_2020
<https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/GeoServer_Budget_2020>)

We would like to ask you to help us with budget proposals to assist
your project. This will help us set aside a realistic amount of funding.

Please add your project info to the budget draft at:

https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Budget_2021
<https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Budget_2021>

ideally by 17 January 2021 in advance of our next Board meeting.

When making a budget request please keep in mind the vision and goals
of our Foundation, along with any obligations you wish to meet.

Thank you.

[OSGeo-Discuss] [OSGeoLive] OSGeoLive 14.0 status: beta1

2021-01-27 Thread Angelos Tzotsos

Hi all,

Today we are releasing the first beta of OSGeoLive 14.0.
This release includes many package updates on top of Lubuntu 20.04.1
(from DebianGIS and UbuntuGIS) and is expected to be stable enough. Many
thanks to all the volunteers that are helping us to build this distribution.

For OSGeoLive 14.0 our plan is to release 2 versions of the distribution:
 * the bootable iso which will include 90% of the projects due to file
system limitation and
 * the virtual machine version which will include all the available
projects and some extra features that would not fit into the iso (e.g.
libreoffice, extra developer packages, extra documentation etc)

The OSGeoLive team would like to ask the community for testers, since
our plan is to move to RC stage in about a month.
Please download [1], [2], test and report any issues found [3]. Change

Hi all,

Here is the first draft of the 2021 Budget based on the last meeting
discussion.

We need to cover some more areas in our next meeting this Monday:
* Local Chapters
* Code Sprints
* Travel Grants

I'm one of the people that's been working especially to coordinate a unified
community response, and as such, I have had cursory discussions regarding this
with Tom Chadwin, Tom Kralidis, and Angelos Tzotsos; I'm also aware of other
people who have discussed this with OSGeo via other channels.

I'm happy to answer any additional questions anyone on the list might have, as
I'm sure any of the other community members would, as well.

From initial discussions, we would like to see how we can proceed to a
possible incubation and eventual community project status, but for now we're
excited to have a clear path forward and are looking to support open source for
web mapping in the future.

Also, glad to be a member of the list, now!

One of the objectives pointed out during the meeting was to contact and start

I think I can speak in the name of everyone that met today, to thank and

the vast number of many other Open Source libraries and components they have

You can find more details about MapLibre in this initial coordinating

tuned for a first release of the library under the MapLibre name.

Subject: [GCI-mentors] Thank you all for 10 incredible years of
Google Code-in

Hi GCI Mentors and Org Admins,

Google Code-in concluded 10 amazing, productive, exhilarating years in
January. This program has been a success because of the amazing energy
and passion all of you have exhibited; volunteering dozens, hundreds,
and in some cases, thousands(!) of hours to help 14,700+ teenagers,
from 115+ countries, complete a whopping 76,200+ open source tasks,
during the past 10 years!

We wanted all of you to be among the first to know that Google Code-in
2019 was our final Google Code-in contest. We've been looking hard at
our portfolio of programs and as open source evolves, our programs
need to evolve too. We've decided to focus our efforts on Google
Summer of Code and programs like Season of Docs that meet projects'
sustainability needs going into the next 10 years of open source.

We want to thank you all for being inspiring role models to these
students. Many of you were GCI or GSoC students yourselves and have
been paying it forward for years by helping teenagers discover their
passion for open source software development. The extent of your
support was something many didn’t expect when they first started out
trying to complete a few tasks to earn a Google T-shirt.

You have welcomed students into your communities and shown them how
open source is making the world a better place and how they can be a
part of that. You all have inspired, taught, listened, and made a
difference in the lives of thousands of students. THANK YOU! These
students have brought fresh new perspectives and ideas into your
communities, inspiring long-term committers with their enthusiasm,
curiosity and skills.

Many of you have been mentors for all 10 years of GCI (plus GHOP!),
while others came into the GCI family just this past year. Regardless
of when you joined, thank you all for showing immense kindness,
patience, dedication, organization and guidance to the students, the
other mentors in our GCI community, and to me and the rest of our team
over the years.

These past 10 years of Google Code-in have been an exciting,
adrenaline pumping adventure – thanks for coming along on the ride
with us!

We will continue to be dedicated to helping open source communities be
sustainable and finding new contributors is an essential part of those
efforts. While Google Code-in is now officially retired, we look
forward to finding new ways to support your communities.

Best,

Stephanie Taylor

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Revisiting the Raspberry Pi -- new developments

2020-06-19 Thread Angelos Tzotsos
version sometime after October 2020.

So, if it might be possible, would it be worth anybody's time to do this?
Is there a need or use case for OSGeo Live on a Raspberry Pi 4?
or would it just be a useless one off stunt requiring immense, but futile
effort?

The 2020 U.S. Census begins release of data in April 2021. So, that might
generate more interest in GIS in the U.S., but what about the rest of
the world? Are there projects or programs where a Raspberry Pi 4 running
Lubuntu with OSGeo Live might be useful?

[OSGeo-Discuss] COVID-19 FOSS initiatives

2020-05-15 Thread Angelos Tzotsos

*

Dear OSGeo community,

We are living in difficult times. The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the
great challenges of our generation that has initiated a shape-shifting
world with consequences that no-one can fully foresee. Even though our
work mainly requires access to a computer and an Internet connection,
our community has also been affected. With code sprints, conferences,
hackathons and other related gatherings canceled or postponed all over
the globe, we are deprived of an important aspect entangled into our
community fabric - the social aspect. In these times, it is even more
important to stay connected, share what you do and follow what others
are doing.

In the spirit of collaboration, we open the wiki page in [1] to collect
information regarding initiatives  developed using FOSS solutions,
connected to the COVID-19 pandemic evolution. Thus, we invite anyone
involved in such an initiative or has knowledge of one, to acknowledge
their efforts by including it.

Stay safe,

Angelos,

On behalf of the OSGeo board

2020 in Athens.

We are already talking to our venue hosts to plan a new date either at
the end of 2020, early 2021 or May 2021, it will all depend on the
FOSS4G decisions to be made very soon.

The board is working with the FOSS4G 2020 and 2021 LOCs to plan ahead,
more to be announced soon.

[OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo Community Sprint May 2020 in Athens - join us and please register soon

2020-01-29 Thread Angelos Tzotsos

Dear developers, users & community members,

OSGeo Community Sprint will come to Athens (Greece) in May 2020 [1]. You
are

invited to join us.

When:

- Mon 2020-05-25 08:30 - Fri 2020-05-29 17:00

Where:

- Venue: Serafio - Sports, Culture and Innovation Center Main Hall [2],
Municipality of Athens

Interested? So read more about why & where & when...

The Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) has a long tradition of
organizing code sprints for developers of Open Source GIS software.

For several years the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) [3] has
been organizing a yearly Code Sprint, a come-together of the "C Tribe"
OSGeo projects - now we call it OSGeo Community Sprint and all "Tribes"
are included/welcome. Leading developers of projects like GDAL, PostGIS,
MapServer, GeoServer, GRASS, QGIS, PDAL and many more get
together to discuss new ideas, hack, decide, tackle large geospatial
problems & more & simply to have fun.

Last year the OSGeo Community Sprint was held with success in Minnesota [4].
In 2020 the OSGeo Community Sprint will come again to Europe after
Vienna (2014)[5],

Paris (2016) [6] and Bonn (2018)[7]. This makes is possible to embed
European developers and users. The tradition started in 2009 in Toronto
[8].

Find a list of code sprints at [9].

OSGeo Community Sprint 2020 in Athens

The international code sprint of the OSGeo will take place from 25 to 29
May 2020. We expect about 60 developers from all over the world to come
from

various OSGeo projects [3].

The code sprint will take place at Serafio main hall [10] in Athens, kindly
provided by the Municipality of Athens [11], the largest municipality in
Greece

with a variety of geospatial applications heavily powered by OSGeo projects.

Acommodations
---
Working zones will be created for you in the main hall area.
Healthy and not-so-healthy catering of drinks and snacks will
be provided by us. Participation in codesprint is free of charge.
However, overnight stays will have to be reserved and paid for by
yourself.

Several hotels and apartments are close to the venue [12].
The venue neighborhood is called "Gazi", while the nearby
neighborhood closer to Acropolis is  called "Thiseion". Using
those search terms, you will be able to find lots of options
within walking distance.

Register for the OSGeo Community Sprint
-
And don't forget to sign up in the OSGeo wiki at our OSGeo Community
Spint 2020 page:
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Community_Sprint_2020#Participants

This is important for us, not only for the planning of snacks and
drinks.

The OSGeo Community Sprint is open to all who wish to participate in one or
more projects. There is always plenty to do – it’s not all about
programming. Translation, documentation, feedback, discussions, testing
– all this is also important for projects so everyone is cordially
invited to attend the code sprint!

The Community Sprint Organizing Team is looking forward to see you there!

Questions?

If you have questions/comments/ideas please let us know.

Send an email to tzotsos at osgeo.org. You are welcome!

OSGeo is reaching out to all committees, including project steering
committees, to help plan our budget for 2020.

As in last year, the board is discussing about assigning a starting
budget of 2000$ to all graduated projects who have reported to the
board the last 12 months (e.g. during the AGM or directly to a board
meeting).

For projects with more of a plan (to pursue a specific goal) projects
are welcome to send a more detailed request for approval (see
detailed budget requests from 2019 e.g.
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/GvSIG_Budget_2019)

A good idea is to focus on OSGeo participation, for example attending
the AGM or OSGeo code sprint. Also keep in mind OSGeo goals as an
organization, (e.g. interoperability goal: CITE compliance or
participation developing new standards)

We would like to ask you to help us with budget proposals to assist
your project. This will help us set aside a realistic amount of funding.

Please add your project info to the budget draft at:

https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Budget_2020

ideally by Dec 30 ahead of our next board meeting.

When making a budget request please keep in mind the vision and goals

Thank you.

hope I helped others on this journey too. OSGeo is evolving to be more
inclusive, diverse and bigger than ever and I am proud of you all.

As some of you may know, some months ago I decided to go back into the
barricades and far from public exposure. I think rotating positions
inside a voluntary organization is something very healthy to do and
gives you a unique perspective. That's why I decided to participate on
a proposal for FOSS4G 2021 and not repeat elections again for the
Board.

I hereby resign as President to let one of the current members of the
Board take this position. I have always a strong advocate that this
kind of positions should be taken by Board members, so I want to
explicitly facilitate the transition. Our current vice-presidents
Helena Mitasova and Angelos Tzotsos will fill the space until a new
President is appointed.

I have to say I'm still a bit sad of the geographic, cultural and
ethnic representation on the Board. I am sure we can change this on
the following years. Until then, I am confident current members of the
Board will do a great job representing you all.

See you all in Calgary in 2020!
María, your former OSGeo President.

    Recommendations for OSGeo terminology management

    1. Establish a terminology management group in OSGeo.

ISO/TC 211, IEC Electropedia and OGC all have one for
terminology management. The existence of this group is
crucial to the success of the OSGeo terminology database.
It will play two essential roles:

    a) As the gatekeeper of terms to ensure quality checks of
    contributions
    b) As the seat of central terminology knowledge for
alignment of terms and concepts. To facilitate the flow of
terminology knowledge to terminology authors and users.

It would be helpful to involve representation from ISO/TC
211 and OGC in this group, in order to leverage their
experience in terminology. Such experience will be useful
in situations such as alerting on cross-organization
alignment of concepts or term duplication.

An email list shall be setup for this group for internal
    communication.

    2. Establish a terms of reference for terminology
management.

For the terminology management group, a terms of reference
should be produced so that the steps for approval and data
quality requirements are clear. This should be openly
shared with contributors so they are clear on acceptance
    criteria.

Contributors may propose changes to the terminology
database at any time. The terminology management group
shall discuss and approve or disapprove of the proposal
within a reasonable timeframe. This practice is in-line
with the open source, change-based, rapid iteration
    mantra, similar to OpenSSL.

For releases, the group shall convene periodically, such
as every 4-6 months, to discuss previously decided
proposals, governance or technical issues related to
    terminology management.

The method of submitting change requests shall also be
determined and announced so that contributors understand
    the necessary processes and timeline.

    3. Establish an online terminology database presence.

Terminology isn’t useful until people use them, which
means people need to first know they exist and what they
mean. Geolexica is an initiative that currently serves
ISO/TC 211’s terminology management group in making its

effective with a single click.

5. Allow easy feedback from terminology users.

To minimize friction in the feedback process, for every term offered
in the OSGeo terminology pages we can offer a “propose new term” and
“propose changes to this term" buttons. This allows user to directly
go to the issue platform (e.g. GitHub) to make the suggested changes.

A “contributors guide” document will greatly help these people make
the proper suggestions and have them formatted correctly.

6. Initial load and data cleanup.

The initial load of the terms will involve a bulk load from the
cleaned terms and definitions that Felicity has compiled. Geolexica
could easily handle the initial conversion from table format into the
desired structured data format.

The cleanup process has already been started by Reese Plews, convenor
of the TMG at ISO/TC 211.

Hi Ron,

I really like your proposal. It looks very practical, should address
quality requirements, and should be relatively light weight to
manage. Some comments/suggestions:

* You might want to mention the approach to your first load of
terms, which probably should involve a bulk load from a derivative
of the terms that Felicity has compiled.

* I suggest we set up an email list to discuss terms. OSGeo can
provide that for us, and I can coordinate that, once we have agreed
on our approach.

* I suggest that an updating the glossary be tied to a periodic
event, at least annually. I think we should tie in with the
OSGeoLive annual build cycle for this.

* You haven't mentioned https://osgeo.geolexica.org/
<https://osgeo.geolexica.org/> in your description. I assume that
would be part of the solution? If so, I suggest mentioning it.

* Another project I'm helping start up is
https://thegooddocsproject.dev/ <https://thegooddocsproject.dev/>
(Writing templates to make good docs for open source projects). I
expect that the solution you are proposing would be valuable for a
wide variety of domains, and should be captured as best practices in
TheGoodDocsProject. At some point in the future, I'm hoping that you
might provide a generic version of your suggestions for others to
follow too.

Feel free to add your ideas below into the wiki at:
https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeolive/wiki/Glossary%20terms

(Maybe add "DRAFT" at the top, until we have the process set up.)

* Ron and Reese, I'm hoping that you both will continue to provide
the leadership and stewardship of the community as it grows? Your
advice has been great to date.

Warm regards, Cameron

[OSGeo-Discuss] Fwd: OSGeo Budget 2019 for projects.

2019-01-08 Thread Angelos Tzotsos

Hi all,

I am forwarding this e-mail here, to make sure it reaches to all Project
Officers/PSC chairs.
If you are a Project Officer please make sure to join the projects
mailing list.

Cheers,
Angelos

 Forwarded Message
Subject:OSGeo Budget 2019 for projects.
Date: Mon, 7 Jan 2019 20:35:54 +0200
From: Angelos Tzotsos
To: proje...@lists.osgeo.org

Dear OSGeo project members,

Over the previous years, OSGeo has been proud to support a growing
number of project events, such as code sprints, developer meetings, and
user conferences.

OSGeo is reaching out to all committees, including project steering
committees, to help plan our budget for 2019.

This year, the board is discussing about assigning a starting budget of
2000$ to all graduated projects who have reported to the board the last
12 months (see https://git.osgeo.org/gitea/osgeo/todo/issues/11).

For projects with more of a plan (to pursue a specific goal) projects
are welcome to send a more detailed request for approval (e.g.
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/GvSIG_Budget_2019)

A good idea is to focus on OSGeo participation, for example attending
the AGM or OSGeo code sprint. Also keep in mind OSGeo goals as an
organization, (e.g. interoperability goal: CITE compliance or
participation developing new standards)

We would like to ask you to help us with budget proposals to assist your
project. This will help us set aside a realistic amount of funding.

Please add your project info to the budget draft at:

https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Budget_2019

ideally by January 14 ahead of our January board meeting.

When making a budget request please keep in mind the vision and goals of
our foundation, along with any obligations you wish to meet.

Thank you and best wishes,

On behalf of OSGeo Board,

Angelos

Kristian, i already have a few ideas for a PROJ logo and will come up
with a SVG proposal soon !

Bart, thanks for noticing that mistake, the GeoExt logo has been
removed from the set. Sorry for that.

Cameron, adding colors to the project logos SVG would indeed be quite a lot
of
work. Only the Foundation related logos are available in color for now.
(see:https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/7135374/48731563-a1696800-ec3d-11e8-9a4c-c1b5919a325a.png
orhttps://github.com/nbozon/osgeo/tree/OSGeo-symbols-set/marketing/branding/symbols/svg/color

Please also note that you can already add a unique color to each
project logo using CSS). I would be glad to work on a colored version, but
i would need much more free time for that !

Nicolas, these symbols look very impressive!

As Kristian noticed, there are a few OSGeoLive projects which have logos
which are not as creative as what you have been creating.
(Seehttps://live.osgeo.org/en/presentation.html ) I'd be happy to help point
you to our OSGeoLive points of contact for each project if you would like
to ask them if you'd like to draw them a logo.

What are your thoughts on logo colours? I'm guessing it would be quite a
bit of work to adopt logo colours into the SVG?

Once you are done, we should probably be including your logos into the
OSGeoLive documentation.

Nice work, Cameron

Nicolas,

Very impressive work!

Regarding projects that doesn’t already have logo, would you be interested
in coming up with logo suggestions for those projects? I can only speak for
the PROJ project, but I am sure all projects without a logo would be
interested in having one. At least a new logo for PROJ would be very
welcome!

Good job,

Kristian

Hello all,

I have finally been able to put together and publish a first version of
the OSGeo symbols set.

This is a visual representation of the OSGeo projects and activities aimed
at supplementing the Foundation branding material.

A preview of the OSGeo symbols set is available
here:https://nbozon.github.io/OSGeo/symbols-set/

The 48 symbols fall into four categories:
- Foundation (OSGeo fundamentals represented by 'Variations on the
Compass')
- Initiatives (mostly based on the compass shape too)
- Projects (derived OSGeo project logos)
- Community (derived Community projects logos)

The set is made of two parts, both copyrighted OSGeo:
- The source SVG documents, licensed under CC-BY-SA

(seehttps://github.com/nbozon/osgeo/tree/OSGeo-symbols-set/marketing/branding/symbols/svg
)
- A cross-browser webfont, licensed under OFL.
(seehttps://github.com/nbozon/osgeo/tree/OSGeo-symbols-set/marketing/branding/symbols/font
)

Important notes:
- Some projects do not have a logotype, only logotext, and cannot be
included in the set at this stage (namely PROJ, GEOS, OSSIM and Degree).
- Some projects logos were heavily modified or redrawn, in order to ensure
constistency and scalability. I'm listening to project owners feedbacks and
will be glad to work towards better solutions if needed.
- All 48 symbols are made available as black SVG. The 16 Foundation and
Initiatives icons are also available in color, based on our brand
guidelines.
- This work may not be exhaustive and is subject to change.

Hope you will like it !

Reviews, comments and ideas are most welcome in the related
PR:https://github.com/OSGeo/osgeo/pull/206

As someone who hasn't been here from the beginning, I would like to have
some kind of (virtual) museum-like place where I can learn about our
history. Sometimes I hear names of people all the "old" members remember
but as they are no longer with us (sometimes just because they retired,
sometimes because they passed away) and I only get pieces of who they were
and what they did. I am very fond of conserving history, I think it is very
important to learn where we come from to understand where we are now.

What do you think? Would there be volunteers to fill data if we setup
something like this on the website? We need senior members here filling the
gaps.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] [Board] AGM Followup - what our foundation is doing in 2017

2017-10-23 Thread Angelos Tzotsos

Thanks Jody,

It looks like the following projects have not provided an update during
the AGM and should be called to attend our next board meeting:

- gvSIG
- Marble
- QGIS
- FDO
- GDAL/OGR
- GEOS
- GeoTools
- OSSIM
- PostGIS
- GeoNetwork
- deegree
- geomajas
- Mapbender
- MapFish
- MapGuide Open Source
- OpenLayers

Given the number of the projects in that list, perhaps it would be
easier to organize separate meetings (or video calls), asking projects
and board members to attend.

I volunteer to follow up with the project officers and arrange those
meetings if the board approves.

Best,
Angelos

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Proposal for the listing of projects in our new web site

2017-10-08 Thread Angelos Tzotsos

Hi,

One action item from a recent board meeting was to help review the
community project rules.

Even has raised some interesting points some time ago and I think it
would be valuable to follow up on this discussion with help from
Incubation committee.

Some comments inline:

On 08/19/2017 03:39 PM, Even Rouault wrote:

Hi Angelos,

thanks for turning those discussions into a positive way forward and your
proposal sounds
good to me. A few comments below.

I would like to propose a way forward:

1. We should *only* promote projects that are somehow affiliated with OSGeo
(as other Free and Open Source organizations do eg. Apache, Eclipse)

Makes sense. When you promote something on your website, you are somewhat
responsible
for it, so you must ensure that it meets some minimum criteria that are in the
"OSGeo spirit"

A proposal for *new* rules:
* Has to have an OSI or FSF approved license and be found on the web in a
public place.

Sounds obvious, but we should probably rephrase that "Source code is released
with an OSI
or FSF approved license and is available on the web in a public place."

I know at least one project that is Apache licensed but released only as
binaries, which makes
it not very convenient to modify :-)

I agree with the new phrasing.

* Has to be useful on its own with normal data, and NOT require another
license to really use it

Is it something that is currently required for graduation ? I don't see this
criterion mentioned
in
http://www.osgeo.org/incubator/process/project_graduation_checklist.html

That one is probably tricky to write correctly. Stated like this, that would
for example exclude
a Windows executable, since to use it you must own a Windows license... Even if
you take a
Linux executable that is X/MIT licensed, it links against the GNU libc that is
GPL licensed (but
as GNU libc is considered part of the OS, there's a provision in the GPL
license to not apply
the GPL obligations to the code that links to it). Or if you take a Java
program, it must run
within a JVM that comes with its own license. Same for Python, etc...

We definitely need to review the phrasing.
This is indeed something we do not check for graduation, perhaps just
because we did not get an application with such issues.

But beyond this nitpicking, that criterion can raise more fundamental debates:
* is the intent to exclude projects that would be open-source released plugins
of a
proprietary software for example (the plugin could be an exporter from
proprietary formats/
projects to open source ones for example) ?
* Or open-source released projects that would connect to a proprietary server
(just saw in
LWN headlines that Debian is currently debating whether they should allow OSS
software
that connect to proprietary services) ?
* What about a fully open-source project that connects to a proprietary service
?

Very interesting points.
In my opinion, we should make sure that we do not list projects that
only require a proprietary server to work with. Even if they are fully
open source, one would need to pay the server side to actually use them...

If I take the exemple of GDAL, the following situations can be found:
* it is X/MIT licensed but can link to a few GPL licensed lib (poppler, GRASS,
...)
* it can link to proprietrary licensed libs
* it can interact with proprietary services that have a public API, but don't
require linking
against proprietary code
* other/most parts are fully useful on their own

So I think this question alone could deserve its own thread.

Offering interaction with proprietary services/libraries is completely
different from requiring them to work properly, so I do not see an issue
with GDAL obviously :)

The project should need to officially apply for being included as OSGeo
Community Project, by answering a questionnaire (including information
gathering for the web site and provide a point of contact for maintaining
that information in the future)

+1

Relation question: if OSGeo website promotes a community project, should the
website of
this project (or github page if no dedicated website) links to OSGeo one ? I'm
not even sure
this is a requirement for a graduated project.

Even

I think that most graduated projects link to OSGeo. Perhaps we should
look again as part of the project review the board is initiating.

Best,

Angelos

Name: María Arias de Reyna
Country of Residence: Spain

It is my pleasure and honour to nominate María Arias de Reyna[1] for the
Board of Directors of OSGeo. You may remember that I nominated María last
year for the Board, but since then she has gone on to give several great
keynote talks at various events around the world, bringing much-needed
discussions of diversity and sharing to the forefront of events.

María is well known in the OSGeo community for her relentless efforts as a
core contributor for the GeoNetwork project, and for her longtime
contributions to the SIG Libre conference (the Spanish FOSS4G). Locally she
is very active through the OSGeo microchapter network Geoinquietos, and more
recently also through the Spanish national geomatics association, AESIG. She
works for GeoCat providing SDI solutions all over the world.

So you can see, María is a leader locally, nationally, and internationally.
You can often find her live-tweeting[2] at every FOSS4G event, and sharing
her passion for all things OSGeo. I see in her a very strong voice, full of
youthful energy and passion, and a true leader that is absolutely ready for
the global spotlight.

Please show your support for María, and help to bring her passion to the
Board of the OSGeo foundation.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Proprietary GIS on our OSGeo website

2017-09-21 Thread Angelos Tzotsos

Hi,

The last 3 sentences of this statement make me worry for more future
conflicts.

What happens when the Marketing Committee (which has the mandate to
outreach for OSGeo and create the new web site) conflicts with the new
Website Management Team (part of Systems Administration Committee) on
the content of the web site?
Which one of these teams gets to decide if the site focuses on our
community (us) or on bringing in new users (outreach)? Do-ocracy is not
an option in this case, both groups are willing to act.
Going through the by-laws [1] once again, I see that the only conflict
resolution process we have in place is a Board resolution.

Just to be clear: I am not against forming the "Website Management
Team", just trying to be pro-active.

I suggest discussing this matter at the next Board meeting [2]

Hi,

On my opinion, it makes sense to show relation between propietary and
free and open software. Just because we want to people to migrate to
free and open source software, so it is good if they can search for
the software they are currently using to know what software will they
use. It makes sense, it makes life easier on migrations.

Said this, I prefer the "Migrate from" label much better. And sure, no
link to the product, just the name. Why would we need a link? If they
don't know what that software is, the information is useless to them.
If they already know what that software is, the information is
redundant. So having a name is fine, having a link is nonsense.

Is "Migrate from" label aggresive? Not at all. We are OsGeo, we are
promoting FLOSS. Promoting FLOSS means we are encouraging people to
move from propietary to open. That is our philosophy, that is our
motto. If propietary software feels bad because we follow our goals...
well, then maybe they should stop promoting their own software too
because that makes me feel bad.

Regards,
María.

Ben Caradoc-Davies is a longstanding member of the GeoServer

"CSIRO" and more recently as a independent contractor from is native
    New Zealand.

As a contributor Ben has demonstrated excellent leadership

GeoTools Project Management Committee) and mentoring of new
contributors by answering questions, offering encouragement, backed
by kind words and constructive reviews.

Ben is exceptionally generous with his time: willing to take on the

Ben is also takes on some of the harder open source challenges for
the foundation as a whole. In my time as an OSGeo board member Ben
has helped clearly articulated our legal questions, and taken part
in meetings with our legal council.

I also had the privilege of organizing a foss4g-au event with Ben
and follow his open source advocacy work in Australia.

Although it is perhaps not a character reference I personally
appreciate Ben's coding and communication skills. His ability to
contribute code in a consistent, professional manner, and his
communication skills make working on the GeoServer project that much

Dear CRO's,

I would like to nominate Markus Metz for charter membership. Markus is
very deeply involved in the core development of GRASS GIS and has done
invaluable work for our code base. Citing everything he's done would be
too long, but besides introducing many new modules and also
significantly improving the internal libraries, he has done wonders in
allowing GRASS GIS to work with very, very large amounts of data.

Best wishes,

Dear all,
it is pleasure for me to nominate Manuel Grizonet [1] for OSGeo Charter
Membership.
Many people know very well Manuel for the huge activities he is leading
for years in OSGeo. Manuel is involved in the development team and is
PSC member of the OrfeoToolbox that has been successfully incubated this
year.
Manuel is also taking part in the organisation of the OTB HackFest each
year where the OTB community can meet. Other communities can join too
and are very welcome at this event, I got the luck to participate in
such a kind of event and I have to say that I was amazed by the great
work they do there. During the hack fest, users and developers meet to
share their use cases of the software, discuss the next steps for the
project, but also the issue they may face using this or that part of the
project and so on. It is just a very nice and efficient way to have
feedbacks from the community and to meet often.
Manuel is very open to discussion even when, like I do, you have only
question to ask him and not much to offer.
I am confident that Manuel will be a great addition to the OSGeo Charter
Members list.
All the best,
