Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] points of interest database

2013-01-23 Thread Vasilis Vlastaras
Dimitris and all,

Cloudmade provides dumps of the openstreetmap data in various formats
including shapefiles for all over the world. Those dumps have POIs
included.
All these can be found in:

http://downloads.cloudmade.com/

Checking around Raj's OpenPOIs, I see that POIs come from geonames or
dbpedia datasets. Geonames already mentioned earlier.

DBpedia, an attempt to provide structured information extracted from
wikipedia, provides dumps in N-Triples and N-Quads. Data provided
include geographic information as well.
The dumps for version 3.8 can be found in:

http://wiki.dbpedia.org/Downloads38

Also, LingedGeoData is an attempt to provide linked data between
openstreetmap / DBpedia and GeoNames.
The datasets can be found in RDF format here:

http://linkedgeodata.org/Datasets
http://downloads.linkedgeodata.org/

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Gov't adopting open source ?

2010-01-16 Thread Vasilis Vlastaras
It seems the new Greek government turns to open source software for
what it calls 'electronic government'.
The new government through a series of one day conferences tries to
describe its vision for a new way to provide services of public
interest and stimuli businesses based on such software.

Perhaps this link is worth of value.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] FW: [GSDI Technical] blog - We need a Wikipedia for data

2008-04-16 Thread Vasilis Vlastaras
Freebase can be considered a 'wikipedia' of structured data. Freebase provides
the data under creative commons and it is being developed by MetaWeb
Technologies.
Currently in Alpha release, there is an ongoing effort for developing
prototype data objects
and populating these objects with instances of data.

A user community contributes heavily in the process (like in the case
of wikipedia).
Users create their own data types and upload data. Also a significant
effort of developing
algorithms to extract knowledge from wikipedia pages and to store it
in a structured way
in Freebase is currently taking place..

Freebase provides its own Data Query API based on JSON.

The Geospatial Community can take advantage of this technology since
the data are
being provided by Creative Commons. Geographic Data Types may be
possible to be developed
in Freebase. Personally I have tried to evaluate Freebase's abilities
by creating ISO 19115
Data Types for Geographic Metadata and it seems that Freebase could be
very promising.

For those interested, Freebase can be accessed in the following url:

http://www.freebase.com/

A mashup that uses Google Maps and data from Freebase can be accessed here:

http://dev.mqlx.com/~zak/arch/

For those who do not like a commercial company involved in Free Data, what about
establishing an organization that can provide technologies similar to Freebase ?
ie:
1. Website for users to access the community data
2. WebApp to allow community users create their own Data Types
3. WebApp to allow users upload structured data.
4. Open API for users to be able to consume / discover the uploaded data.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Time In GIS

2007-12-13 Thread Vasilis Vlastaras
I don't know if this is of value for you, but you can have a look.

ISO publishes the 191xx series of specifications that deal with
Geographic information.
ISO 19108 - Temporal Schema, deals with time.

The specification document can be bought from the ISO web site.

In addition ISO Technical Commitee 211 provides the models for all
these specifications in its website. The site can be access in:

 Landon;

I did my master thesis on temporal GIS. It included a temporal GIS
implementation of the ESRI personal geodatabase (sorry). But the
concepts and methodology demonstrated in the thesis should be universal.

I can email it to you if you wish.

This is being sent to the geowanking and OSGEO discuss list. I apologize
in advance if you catch it in your inbox twice, but I didn't want to
 miss any potential resources.

I'm working on a GIS Data Model in which I am trying to model some
temporal data. I've done a little research online, but most of the info
is pretty ESRI specific. Although I'm somewhat curious about the use of
temporal data in a GIS in general, I'm really interested in a specific
 approach to the problem.

Does anyone know if there is material available that discusses using
events to model temporal data? (Like the events we use in GUI
 programming.)

I'd really like to read some software-neutral principles on how events
can be used to model time in GIS if this is available. Or, if you have
tackled this challenge personally, I'd love to learn more about your
 personal experience and solutions.

 Thanks,

Landon (A.K.A. - The Sunburned Surveyor)

P.S. - I posted about the particular circumstances that led to my
interest in this topic and some existing material I found online at my
