[OSGeo-Discuss] Charter members on OSGeo Web page

2019-12-02 Thread Vicky Vergara
Dear members,
On [1] you can see the charter member list divided into 2 parts
- The first part is the automatic section
- the second part is the manual section
Today I found some charter members that created their profile during this
last year. Please if you are one of them, double check that the year and
country are correct.

Regards
Vicky from SAC committee

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] [Charter-members] OSGeo 2019 Board of Directors elections: call for nominations

2019-11-14 Thread María Arias de Reyna
Dear OSGeo peers,

Nomination period is coming to a close. Did you nominate your
favourite member to be on the Board? Don't lose this opportunity to
choose who represents you!

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Charter members list

2018-07-17 Thread Jody Garnett
I thought CRO adds people via nomination processs. We are very careful not
to spam the list as the only responsibility we ask of charter members is
elections.

But registering for the website *is* elections since CRO is having trouble
keeping contacts up to date now that there are so many.

Since this is the charter members list, many of the names present are active on

There is a charter-memb...@osgeo.org<mailto:charter-memb...@osgeo.org> email

website.
**Remember that the most important element of our organization are the

This time I divided the mail into 5 topics:

Frist topic: please send me mail to help me find you.
Second topic: Apology
Third topic: About the 2 week ago promise:
Fourth topic: statistics

Fifth topic: Register to OSGeo webapge

Frist topic: please send me mail to help me find you.

If you already have a login name, but you filled your name incomplete, or
differently than the charter member list name then I cant find you.
please send me privately a mail indicating your logging name and who you are in
the charter members list.

If you already have a login name, but you modify your name so it matches the
name on the charter member list, yeah, I will be able to find you, but I have
no means to know you made the change unless you
please send me privately a mail indicating your logging name and who you are in
the charter members list.

If you are new registering to the OSGeo website:
please send me privately a mail indicating your logging name and who you are in
the charter members list.

Second topic: Apology
I apologize of not sending last week report about the charter member list on
the new website.
But:
I was busy with my usual Job duties.
Also busy translating to Spanish the overviews of OSGeoLive documentation.
Also busy doing some GSoC mentoring
Also busy figuring out how to hide the profile page on OSGeo website

From the last "busy" point, I can tell you that now:
if you choose to hide the profile page: (I choose to hide me for this week so
you can see how it works)
- the name wont have a link on the charter members page (look for vicky and you
will see that there is no link)
  https://www.osgeo.org/about/charter-members/

- The hidden profile page shows only the name (and a "pancho the seal" image)
  https://www.osgeo.org/member/vicky-vergara/
PS, "pancho the seal" will change, we are open for ideas of what to put as
image

- the member wont show on the members list
you wont find me here (again look for vicky)
  https://www.osgeo.org/community/members/

Third topic: About the 2 week ago promise
The promise was "If next week we hit the 300 charter members in the automatic
list, I will add sorting buttons so that the charter members can be sorted in
different ways."
That is no easy task fro me: re-learning HTML, re-learning PHP, reading
wordpress code, figuring out how wordpress works internally.
Well, I really appreciate that the 300 charter members in the automatic list
number was not reached.
So I give my great thanks for not making me work (more).

Fourth topic: statistics

This last two week only 2 members were added to the automatic list.

Week before last: 170 charter members, were still missing 220 charter members.

This week: 172 charter members, were still missing 218 charter members.

Fifth topic: Register to OSGeo webapge

For the ones that had never logged into the OSGeo webapge
Note that the wiki login & the osgeo login are different, this last one is an

Also, I am a little uncomfortable with how the Sponsors section shares
the same appearance as the Bio section on the member pages. It makes it
look like they are my personal sponsors rather than sponsors of OSGeo.

Some way to differentiate that the Sponsors section (and below) is part
of the site design rather than that particular person would be nice.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Charter members list

2018-06-30 Thread Vicky Vergara
Hello all

I know that someone mentioned about the following confusion:

When logging in it said:

"Username or mail address"

when we actually don't accept the mail address, and its not any user name,
but the user name from OSGeo LDAP

I just forgot who mentioned that, and I forgot if a ticket was open about
that, if it was opened I just can't find it.
I wanted to do that from some time ago, but I just finally figured out
where I had to do the change

So, I took the liberty of changing to message to:
"OSGeo LDAP Username"

Regards

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Charter members list

2018-06-30 Thread Vicky Vergara
Hello charter members

Hoping that this weekend you have time to work on adding your data to the
OSGeo website.
Remember that the most important element of our organization are the
Members.

Hey, this week 17 members were added to the automatic list

Last week: 153 charter members, were still missing 237 charter members.

This week: 170 charter members, were still missing 220 charter members.

So I was kept busy this week thanks :)

https://www.osgeo.org/about/charter-members/

I had a question:
> What is the list of Charter Members sorted by? It mostly looks sorted
first name, but not 100%.

The automatic member list is sorted by [first name + last name]
So, I join first name and last name then sort the result

The non automatic member list is a copy of the old member list page without
the names already in the automatic section.
The first part of the list (up to 2016) was kept in an ordered manner by
last name
the 2017 members, were appended to the list at the end, in an un-orderly
fashion

So, I will make a promise:
If next week we hit the 300 charter members in the automatic list, I will
add sorting buttons so that the charter members can be sorted in different
ways.

For the ones that had never logged into the OSGeo webapge
Note that the wiki login & the osgeo login are different, this last one is
an LDAP login

Click on login,
fill your (LDAP) login and password

if you dont have an LDAP account: https://id.osgeo.org/ldap/create
you will need a mantra. (you can ask me for it or click on the mantra
button)

To change your OSGeo password, go to: https://id.osgeo.org/ldap/edit

If you forgot your password, go to https://id.osgeo.org/ldap/reset

For the ones that are already registered on the OSGeo webapge but I could
not find you because data might be incomplete

Please update your data:
* fill "website" field with link to the OSGeo wiki page you created when
you were nominated.
* Fill your first name and last name & e-mail

**IMPORTANT**
If you:
* are creating your member page,
* or if it exists already and you are not in the automated section of
charter members page,
* or if you see a mistake
* or need the mantra
* created a double account and now have to pages
* or have any problem

please send me a reply privately, so that we don't inundate discuss channel
and I can give you a hand.

Thanks
Vicky

Hoping that this weekend you have time to work on adding your data to
 the OSGeo website.
Remember that the most important element of our organization are the
 Members.

Hey, this week 3 members were added to the automatic list, so at the
rate of 3 per week I will never finish ;)

Last week: 150 charter members, are still missing 240 charter members.

This week: 153 charter members, were still missing 237 charter members.

So I kept my self busy this week:
The profile pate is using the avatar, I hope you like it.
I also added a link "Website" that makes use of the field "website" and
hopefully you are pointing it to your wiki.

For the ones that had never logged into the OSGeo webapge

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Charter members list

2018-06-23 Thread Vicky Vergara
Hello charter members

Hoping that this weekend you have time to work on adding your data to the
OSGeo website.
Remember that the most important element of our organization are the
Members.

Hey, this week 3 members were added to the automatic list, so at the rate
of 3 per week I will never finish ;)

Last week: 150 charter members, are still missing 240 charter members.

This week: 153 charter members, were still missing 237 charter members.

So I kept my self busy this week:
The profile pate is using the avatar, I hope you like it.
I also added a link "Website" that makes use of the field "website" and
hopefully you are pointing it to your wiki.

https://www.osgeo.org/about/charter-members/

* or need the mantra
* or have any problem

please send me a reply privately, so that we don't inundate discuss channel
and I can give you a hand.

Thanks
Vicky

Hello charter members

Hoping that this weekend you have time to work on adding your data to the
OSGeo website.
Remember that the most important element of our organization are the
Members.

So this past week was kind of "lazy" for me, because only 3 more charter
members were added to the automatic list.

Last week: 147 charter members, were still missing 243 charter members.
This week: 150 charter members, are still missing 240 charter members.

I need you to keep me busy :)

https://www.osgeo.org/about/charter-members/

For the ones that had never logged into the OSGeo webapge
Note that the wiki login & the osgeo login are different, this last one is
an LDAP login

Click on login,

not find you because data might be incomplete

Please update your data:
* fill "website" field with link to the OSGeo wiki page you created when
you were nominated.
* Fill your first name and last name & e-mail

**IMPORTANT**
If you:
* are creating your member page,
* or if it exists already and you are not in the automated section of
charter members page,
* or if you see a mistake
* or need the mantra
* or have any problem

and I can give you a hand.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Charter members list

2018-06-13 Thread Ko Nagase
Hi Vicky,

I wanted to check my info, but currently
"www.osgeo.org" site seems to be down (with timed out error from Japan).

Are there some troubles on the server ?
(Note that "old.www.osgeo.org" site was no problem.)

Thanks,

Ko

2018-06-11 Thread Vicky Vergara
Hello charter members

I revised again the charter member list and now we have the info of 147
charter members, we are still missing 243 charter members.
For me is difficult to match names only with no last name, or last name
only with no names.
This one is so interesting:
yo (this means "me" in Spanish), and has no last name.

I follow the old charter members page:
http://old.www.osgeo.org/charter_members

Please undate your data:
* fill "website" field with link to the OSGeo wiki page you created when
you were nominated.
* Fill your first name and last name & e-mail

If you:
* are creating your member page,
* or if it exists already and you are not in the automated section,
* or if you see a mistake
please send me the link privately, so that we don inundate discuss channel
and I can get to the page and mark you as charter member.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Charter members list

2018-06-09 Thread Vicky Vergara
Dear OSGeo charter members

During the past two weeks, I worked to have an automatic generated charter
member's page (using the database capabilities of wordpress) and the
automatically generated board members.

** About "Board" page
https://www.osgeo.org/about/board/

I am using the "location" field and for some it still empty.

** About "Charter member" page

Now the member type does not have: "board" and "charter member" as options,
Those are now assigned by CRO. (I am helping CRO)

The old charter members page can be seen here:
http://old.www.osgeo.org/charter_members

The new charter members page can be seen here:
https://www.osgeo.org/about/charter-members

For the ones that are automatically generated (have a link) please double
check that I did not made a mistake by comparing your info with the info on
the old page.

As you can see, there are 304 charter members that have not registered to
the new website.
We would appreciate if you register to the website, some administrative
tasks will be easier for Board, CRO and SAC when charter members are
registered.

The information we need for the administrative tasks:
* fill "website" field with link to the OSGeo wiki page you created when
you were nominated.
* Fill your first name and last name & e-mail

I will update on the weekend the charter members who registered during the
week.
e-mail me if you are already registered and I missed your name.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Charter Members: What kind of an OSGeo Board do we want?

2017-10-13 Thread Jeff McKenna

Hi Steven,

Your questions are great, and I think I tackled most of them in my
manifesto/vision document. But I think I did not properly address the
"what has not worked as well as you hoped?".

In a job interview this is always a good question, a great way to
self-examine and openly discuss things that come more difficult for you.

I think in my case, I let my passion sometimes get in the way of
professionalism. This is my downside in OSGeo. I have so much passion
for helping the OSGeo community, that I can sometimes come off as
disrespectful to others in the community (Andrea Ross, Bart, Mark
Lucas). I am sorry for that. If we were at an event right now I
would walk directly over to each of them now to talk. I am sorry that
my words were disrespectful to you, and (in each case) I am sure I was
wrong.

I am sure there are others upset at me, for almost 17 years is a long
time to work in the Open community.

I am truly sorry.

If it sounds not meaningful, this actually comes from my heart. We are
all on the same team.

I support you all as leaders, true leaders.

I may have failed you in the past.

I am sorry.

Steven, thanks for the great questions. I hope my honest answer helps
understand me, just one of the many great nominees for the 2017 Board.

Charter members, we have a tough choice to make to select 5 of these 9
outstanding candidates to serve for the next 2 years. I thought I would
share some of the considerations that will influence my choices when we
get to vote, they may help others to identify what is important to them

We have an opportunity to shape the board in terms of professional

  * The current board is balanced between practitioners/developers and
academics - do we want to maintain that balance?
  * Currently 3/9 of the board are women (Anita is standing down, thanks
for your contributions, Helena is standing for re-election)
  * 4 of the 5 board members standing down are standing for re-election,
additionally 2 past members of the board are standing for election.
There are 3 candidates who have not served on the board.

Some questions for candidates:

  * If you are standing for re-election - what roles have you taken in
the last 2 years? what do you believe you have achieved and what has
not worked as well as you hoped?

[OSGeo-Discuss] Charter members and local chapters (was: RE: Board Candidate Manifestos: 3 questions)

2017-10-12 Thread Gert-Jan van der Weijden - Stichting OSGeo.nl
Hi Vicky,

Thanks for your answer to my question.

Regarding the number (9) of charter members in the Dutch local chapter:

By time we started the local chapter there were just 3 charter members, I guess.

To my opinion in regard to setting up and running a local chapter being an
OSGeo.org charter member is of no (that is: zero) importance.

Charter membership is an OSGeo.org category, not related to the Dutch
organisation.

>From my point of view, OSgeo.org charter membership is more like a sort of
>title, given to people who in the past few year have made themselves in one
>way or another valuable for the OSGeo community.

In our local chapter we have a sort of loose membership, which is simply a
fact of writing your name on the wiki. (by this time 126).

In daly life, that list is just one of 3 indicators of connectivity; the Dutch
mailinglists holds some 240 people (mostly developer-oriented) and our Meetup
group has 329 members (mainly end-user based)

The Dutch local chapter is a legal foundation, and foundations simply don't
have such a thing as membership. As opposed to associations.

The German speaking chapter (FOSSGIS), for instance is organized as a
association, and thus has formal members (who pay an annual fee).

Kinds regards,

Gert-Jan

Onderwerp: Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Board Candidate Manifestos: 3 questions

Hello all, Gret-Jan

In my view section of my manifesto I mention OSGeo is here to serve the people
of the world.

People in the world are Geographically distributed, have different cultures and
using some number about the languages, for example, only in Mexico there are
around 60+ languages and 6000+ languages around the world.

So, we are here to serve the people regardless of the Geographical diversity,
culture diversity, DNA diversity, gender diversity, political diversity,
religious diversity.

I don't think that is compulsory to have a representation of every
continent/country/language/DNA/gender on every cycle of the Board, but I think
it would help if from time to time the diversities are also represented.

I hope the above answers your question. And I also hope that the following
raises some internal questions:

I will talk about what I know:

Spanish is the second most spoken language on the world (first is mandarin) and
is the official language of 20 countries, 19 are located in Latin America 1 is
located in Europe.

Since OSGeo started there has not being a person in the Board from any of
those countries. [1]

Some truth reality: [2] (Using data before this last charter member election)

Total Spanish Speaking charter members: 24 = 16 (Spain) + 1 (Uruguay) + 6
(Argentina) + 1 (México)

Total Latin American charter members: 8 = 1 (Uruguay) + 6 (Argentina) + 1
(México)

Total charter members from Peru + Bolivia: 0

Total charter members from Netherlands: 9

Some questions arise:

Why it is possible with 9 charter members, to create a local chapter? [3]

Are the people on the photograph of Netherlands local chapter registered as
OSGeo users?

If so, what haven't they done to become a charter member?

Why with 0 charters members people can start building a local chapter? [4]

Are these working Peruvians registered as OSGeo users?

If so, and having the fact that they are working to build the local chapter,
why they are not a charter member?

Maybe some answer to those questions will give a hint of:

Why Geoinquietos Argentina [5] can organize FOSS4G and with 6 charter members,
there is no Argentina local chapter?

Why on countries with at least 1 charter member (on Uruguay and Mexico) no one
is starting a local chapter on those countries?

Is it because we are waiting for more OSGeo charter members?

Is it because we don't know who is a user?

Is it because we need to learn how to be open?

Is it because people that use OSGeo do not register as users?

Is it because we don't understand English?

Is it because only 58% of people who starts High School finishes High School?
[6]

I don’t know the Netherlands education situation, so maybe we are similar, if
it is the case, then I would ask:

How could you make your local chapter, when this kind of desertion from
school happens?

Regards

Vicky

1. If you are standing for re-election - what roles have you taken in the last
2 years? what do you believe you have achieved and what has not worked as well
as you hoped?

First of all I am happy that we are in a different place than where we were
when I ran in 2015
out of concerns for the future of OSGeo - thanks to the OSGeo community
standing up and the new board
working together (thanks GeoCat for providing space for f2f board meeting at a
critical time)
we have a thriving organization with the new generation bringing in energy and
vision for future.

I served as vicepresident, taking responsibility for working with geoforall
initiative and memoranda of understanding.
We signed several new MoUs and renewed those that were expiring, as a result we
have co-organized sessions
and workshops at partner conferences, presented webinars and formalized
existing collaborations,
spreading the knowledge and passion for open source geospatial.
For geoforall, see my presentation from FOSS4G 2017 here
https://ncsu-geoforall-lab.github.io/geoforall/#/

I also tried to help with the website, although Jody did the heavy lifting for
the board.
Website has forced us to go through everything that we do and re-evaluate what
works and what needs to change
so the impact of this effort goes way beyond an outreach and webpresence.

What has not worked?
On-line meetings and email exchanges have challenges, sometimes leading to
miscomunication.
Keeping track of meetings and action items has not always been easy, although
loomio has helped (thanks Anita for introducing it).
F2f meetings help but we had very few.

2. All candidates - what role, specific topics would you like to work on within
the board and why?
what do you hope to contribute and achieve in the next 2 years?

I plan to continue my previous work with geofroall and our partners
and contribute to successful delivery of the website to the community to take
over.
I would like to build bridges between academia and industry, both in terms of
education and research/development
to help open source geospatial grow new generation of passionate developers,
users and community builders.
I also feel that from time to time it is useful to provide instituitional
memory as one of the founding members.

If there was only 1 thing you could change in the next 2 years what would it be?

This may sound bureaucratic and totally non-visionary but although we have made
a progress in dividing the work
within the board and between the board and the committees,
I would like to have an appointed board secretary responsible for scheduling
meetings, managing agenda,
minutes and votes to ensure that initiatives, projects and committees are
served in timely manner
and board members can focus on more visionary discussions, activities and
decision making.

Helena

   - Promoting diversity (geographical, ethnical, cultural and gender)

I know I have some privilege-blindness here as I am a highly educated
"white" binary-gendered female-born living in an european country. But
still, as president of a WIT association that is already improving
diversity in my region, I think I can push OSGeo a bit forward and help
introducing more diversity until I crash into my ceiling glass of
privilege-blindness.

   - Promoting FLOSS

I would like to go back to the free/open discussion, as making sure our
contributions are reusable and useful should be one of the core goals of
OSGeo. If we become too lax on the open definition, we may end up promoting
closed software that only helps the owner of the source code, not the
community.

But I think the diversity one is the one I would change. Because diversity
will also bring more quality, which means better forms of collaboration,
affecting incidentally the other goal.

I would hope that the freedom promotion can hold two years more without me,
specially because I know there are very good advocators fighting this war
already and it is a mid-term battle, not a two-years battle.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Charter Members: What kind of an OSGeo Board do we want?

2017-10-09 Thread Steven Feldman
First up my respect and thanks to the 9 candidates that have agreed to stand
for a position on the OSGeo Board.
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Board_Member_Nominations_2017
 It is a fantastic
indication of our vibrant, passionate community that we have 9 people willing
to offer their experience, wisdom, energy and most importantly time to serve.

Charter members, we have a tough choice to make to select 5 of these 9
outstanding candidates to serve for the next 2 years. I thought I would share
some of the considerations that will influence my choices when we get to vote,
they may help others to identify what is important to them in making their
choices and they may also prompt some of the candidates when they write their
personal statements/manifestos.

We have an opportunity to shape the board in terms of professional background,
gender and experience

The current board is balanced between practitioners/developers and academics -
do we want to maintain that balance?
Currently 3/9 of the board are women (Anita is standing down, thanks for your
contributions, Helena is standing for re-election)
4 of the 5 board members standing down are standing for re-election,
additionally 2 past members of the board are standing for election. There are 3
candidates who have not served on the board.

Some questions for candidates:
If you are standing for re-election - what roles have you taken in the last 2
years? what do you believe you have achieved and what has not worked as well as
you hoped?
All candidates - what role, specific topics would you like to work on within
the board and why? what do you hope to contribute and achieve in the next 2
years?
If there was only 1 thing you could change in the next 2 years what would it be?

May the FOSS be with you all

[OSGeo-Discuss] Charter members

2014-07-28 Thread Ravi Kumar
Hi OSGeo Charter,
I have worked with Santosh Gaikwad and Momammad Rashad, using Open Source GIS.

Santosh Gaikwad, is a natural evangelist-cum-teacher-cum-developer.  He has a
knack of using a cocktail of various software
for GIS, both open and closed source to entice those nearly 'sold/addicted', to
the closed source GIS.

Rashad, is a very good code developer of Open Source GIS.
http://in.linkedin.com/in/rashadkm

LSI-IIIT/lsiviewer has many unique graphics like popping out histograms of
administrative entities etc,
to endear Open Source GIS to the administrator.

 Hi all,

OSGeo elections are about to start. The nomination period for new
Charter Member starts tomorrow Saturday 19 of July.

Please, consider nominating new Charter Members within the next two
weeks and help keep the Foundation to be even more diverse,
represented by people from even more countries, languages, profiles
(e.g. Academic, Private, Government, etc.) and interests. For sure you
know people that could bring new points of view and energy to OSGeo,
so tell them about the elections and convince them to join such a

These qualities are of significant in voting for a Charter member.
Voting for G.Hanumantha Rao, a senior Space Application Scientist (NRSC)
will bring a Promoter and and Evangelist into the learned crowd of charter
members.

He can promote use of FOSS4G tools for a sustainable GIS, in public utility
shattering the myth
that GIS can only reside in Ivory towers.

[OSGeo-Discuss] Charter members election

2010-11-03 Thread Ravi
Dear All,
it is time to vote for new charter members again. Charter members are the
decision builders  of OSGeo.

Here I am putting forward some very worthy cases.

Praveen Kumar Sinha:
Is a sincere worker who has mastered the art of Making Training notes for
Geologists,
using FOSS4G tools. But for him FOSS4G Tools could not have penetrated
Geological Survey of India (G.S.I), and empowered every geologist to feel the
power of GSI on his desktop. He actually unshackled the power of Datbase GIS,
demonstrating how a spatial database can be used with the available resources.

Santosh Gaikwad:
He is an environmentalist, who contributed to capacity building with FOSS4G
tools using simple solutions for web-gis with translation to Indian
languages. His dedicated work in various topics of environmental
representation/conservation using FOSS4G tools is exemplary.

Uttam Kumar:
He is one of the pioneers, in building code in the Indian context, for usage of
Indian satellite data. His publications of usage of FOSS4G tools for raster GIS
and Image analysis will inspire workers for a long time.

Harish Karnatak:
He represents the very initiative of FOSS4G tools in Indian space
organisations. The web pages initiated and web applications, using FOSS4G tools
stand apart from similar initiatives done otherwise.

Indian GIS scene:
India needs FOSS4G tools for reasons unique, as I have been blogging
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/User_talk:Ravivundavalli#The_Indian_GIS_scene_--_Hype_and_reality.

These four names represent 'the tip of', a wave of, 'FOSS4G Tools' talent in
India.
Please vote for them.

This is the Indian season for the 'Festival of Lights',
 known as Deepavali,
and may this OSGeo Charter member election, fill OSGeo with new light.

Cheers
Ravi Kumar
