Educational material (was: Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] New OSGeo design)
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Razy, it might be more helpful to ask this on the Education mailing list. There is quite a lot of material in our searchable database [1]. And you might want to check out our Wiki [2] - it is a bit confusing and chaotic but once you find yourself around there is a lot to learn. Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] New OSGeo design
Thanks for bringing this up again; I am really looking forward to our website matching our branding at conferences / booth / slides / handouts. I think I have provided my feedback on the marketing list last time this was discussed? - it would be nice to shorten the column headings (as it makes appear inconsistent); this is more noticeable when you go in a level. - Example: Software Development Support Community Success -- Jody Garnett On Tuesday, 1 November 2011 at 10:19 PM, Jo Cook wrote: Hi All, Responding to Arnulf's tweet about the new site design (http://twitter.com/#!/sevenspatial/status/128711440596078592), I think it's a really good start. I do like the fresher new look, however I found some of the fonts a little hard to read on google chrome. When you've clicked on a theme and you see the theme headings as a second level set of headings (below about us, participate etc) these are pretty small! Unless we're planning to add more themes, could they be spread out a bit more and made larger? There's also an awful lot of whitespace if you have a large monitor and go to full screen- could the background fill the whole page a la twitter? These are just minor points really, and I'm quite excited by the new design! It’s really a big improvement. Some suggestions: -I don’t like the round corners of the boxes. I would prefer square corners. -Some boxes have shadows and some don’t. I would prefer no shadows at all. -The footer of the home page is much too big. I prefer the footer of the other pages because of the color of the text and its small height. -Too many menus around the main content part of the page: the left hand side menu, the “about us, participate…” menu and the “tools to use, foundations to build on…” menu. I would prefer something simpler. I’m not sure we need these links on all pages. My suggestion: have a link to the home page, the search tool and a reminder of where we currently are (like osgeo tools to use find software). -The languages links should be present on all pages. This list of languages may grow in the future. Keeping it a single line may be difficult. Would it be possible to use a drop down list instead of a line of links? -The content and title of the home page boxes is quite confusing. What about having the following sections: OSGeo Foundation, Community and Projects? -A place for news is missing. Catchphrases like Deliver Flexibility that say nothing and then links arbitrarily collected below those catchphrases make sure that you have to hunt through every link on the page before you find the one you want. And how do those categories relate to the About Us, Participate, etc. links on the top right. Sign up to our mailing lists or check out the Getting Started page.. on top and then you have to search in the page for the link to the mailing lists (which is there) and the link to Getting Started which is not. And no news on the main page. The old web page is much easiert to navigate. Take the old page layout, fix a few things here or there and use the design elements from the new web page.
