[OSGeo-Discuss] projects mailing list

2014-10-02 Thread Jachym Cepicky
Hi all,

since there are so many mailing lists on our server, I think, another
one does not harm. I would like to invite you, especially OSGeo
projects contact points and members of the PSCs of OSGeo projects, to
join the

projects at lists.osgeo dot org
http://lists.osgeo.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/projects

mailng list. The topics discussed there should be technical issues,
related to our projects. I assume low traffic list.

Reason for that: I think it makes sense to have one contact point for
all the projects. Not only for me, as secretary, but also for new
coming projects and people interested in the topic. For Local
Chapters, this works IMHO quite well.

Thanks for joining

Jachym

+1 for projects mailing list,

Like Charter Members list, it will be really low traffic, I don't see
the any problem on creating it. The admin can even subscribe the
contacts so not too much hassle for the project contacts and really
convenient for the secretary.

I always prefer mailing lists over distribution lists as an alias on
our server: more flexibility, easier to admin, can be archived or not,
moderated, etc.

Well, Jody, my point is, we should ask project contact points, to be

between project and OSGeo occurs via project officer.

Of course the number is small so they can be contacted individual at

Hi,

when I tried to pass through osgeo incbution, subscription to
incubation mailing lists seemed to be mandatory for all projects. It
seems, nobody from current contact points of OSGeo projects is hanging

I would more than welcome, to have single contact point for osgeo
projects. Which place do you suggest, would be the best place for
contacting all OSGeo projects (and projects in incubation) ?

Thanks

You're talking about a different thing than Landon was suggesting. If
you'd like to participate in the existing effort to track OSGeo membership,
that's a reasonable thing to discuss, but I really think it's out of scope
for this thread.

Landon,

We recently discussed needing such a thing on the board list as well, so that
we could invite projects to participate in discussions which actively affect
them. I worry about allowing any user to spam all of our project leads with
one email, but barring any significant objections, I think this is worth
having and discouraging people from using inappropriately (socially, not
technically.)

C) project team members and primary roles

Of course, this has a lot more featuers than we need and it's a SaaS,
but it is a way to illustrate my point:

I'm not a project lead, but I do have a super ultra secret alias already set
up that I've used in the past for spamming project steering committee leads.
So if you do end up with the project contacts list, let me know and I'll
dump my list as a set of invites for you.

It sounds ok for me (as gvSIG point of contact).

Cameron for example would do a good use of this list when going after us
for LiveDVD updates.

Best

I don't have my heart set on a projects mailing list, but I thought it
was a good idea. How do the software project contacts feel?

What would you guys think about a mailing list for software project
points-of-contact? Jody Garnett mentioned it to me yesterday, and I
think it is a good idea. He suggested proje...@osgeo.org.

Yesterday I had to copy and paste all the software project contact
e-mail addresses from the wiki. This was not fun.

Landon,

I'd suggest a regular mailman list (proje...@lists.osgeo.org)
and then people can self manage their membership easily.

There are big requirements by OSGeo for administrative software in all terms
I guess. Perhaps we could develop something "in-house"?

I think we could build a simple Django app that we could grow organically
here. List of projects, details about them, points of contact, members?

Hmm, for most purposes the wiki is working ok for me!

I'm not keen on more complication except where needed.

Best regards,

Even if not develop in house, there are some open-source project
management software available. I can help look, if it's the case.
