Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] The Pledge – I support Open Principles for Science and Education for building a better world for everyone

2017-07-25 Thread Hogan, Patrick (ARC-PX)
Suchith,

What a great thing to be able to say, and much more actually do!

If we want a future for this world, which we seem to think is ours, nothing is
more essential to our future than a quality education for our children, all
children. We are a long way from there, and our current trajectory for a
sustainable Earth is desperately off target.

This pledge is the least we can do! Thank you Suchith for prompting this in us.

2017-07-16 Thread Hogan, Patrick (ARC-PX)
Suchith,

I heartily agree with ‘officially’ signing up with the Open Science and
Education principles. These words will help to orient and guide us.

Formally recognizing them certainly strengthens our commitment to the noble
GeoForAll cause of helping this world become a more welcome place for life.
Making these principles a living reality is beautiful and so very important. I
hope we are doing that. Officially going on the record as supporting these
principles seems an excellent idea.

The words are a little longer than the NASA motto ‘for the benefit of all’ but
they speak loud and clear, ‘we are here for everybody!’

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] The Pledge – I support Open Principles for Science and Education for building a better world for everyone

2017-06-21 Thread Suchith Anand
Luís,

Many thanks for your inputs. There is an economic and social inequality with
regard to access to, use of, or impact of digital opportunities . Yes, we need
to highlight the need for bridging the “digital divide” and the importance of
providing access to quality education opportunities for all forever. The
combination of Internet ,digital technologies and smart phones have truly
started to open doors for education opportunities to science and technology and
learning about it to all and has enabled mass innovation. Access to quality
education is everyone’s birthright and now we truly have opportunity to make
this possible . We need to ensure these doors for digital economy
opportunities are always open and inclusive to ensure that there are no
artificial barriers created by vested interests (in terms of software lockins,
costs, properitery licences) that prevent educators and academics from giving
away software and learning resources as they wish for learning and innovation
for their students.

We will add this to the pledge.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Dear Suchith,

My only comment at this would be on the "digital divide". To what does it refer
exactly? Is it obvious to everyone that may come read this pledge?
