Afaik udp 3483 is the auto discovery port , and it is broadcasted . If you firewall or NAT it in a router or similar you may have to port forward to the server machine , if the fw is on the server just open those ports . Normally for auto discovery to work server and squeezebox should be on the

I opened my spare and registered it. Then I decided it could have a nice home in my downstairs office, so it is no longer officially a spare. I've decided to live for today...I could get hit by a bus long before Squeezebox Apocalypse finally hits. In the meantime, now I can enjoy music streamed

Sounds like it. And broadcast doesn't get forwarded across subnets. I know a way around this with cisco gear, but not with snapgear (basically linux). Ah, well... BTW I would -guess- this works like a lot of other services (e.g. DHCP, DNS) where the broadcast comes from the (soon to be) client;
