What you describe is
For players which support https (probably SqueezeLite, probably
smartphone players like iPeng, SqueezePad and SqueezePlayer) this might
actually work.
I doubt it does so for Squeezeboxes, especially the ip3k ones.

I only have Squeeze Player that's the same as the Touch/Radio. The
stream source is correctly identified, the index is displayed on
selection, even the description is correct. But the duration is reported
as 1s hitting play reports empty.
Ah. Then it looks like the server itself would need to read the stream,
too.
Or the player uses the port to identify the stream as https.
