Because of the way VFDs work (i.e. the flourescent part) there is an

Few days ago picked up a Squeeze Classic off Amazon ($197). I knew
before buying that it and the boom were getting discontinued, my
question is why?
My thought is that is plays well to a small niche -- I know other
people like me who find an LCD slightly distasteful for listening to
music so,

The Boom is discontinued? It seems available at
The VFD screen on the classic is eol, they are not made anymore .
And it was very expensive, Touch's screen is actually much cheaper so
here the money goes into the player .

the classic once was sold at.

(Boom) hmmm - can't remember where I read it. Maybe was just a rumor?
I figured it must be true b/c both the boom and classic are selling at
hefty discounts.
Didn't realize about the VFD -- that makes sense.

Seems more than a little far-fetched to me that the VFD for the Classic
would be not made any more, while the 1/2 width VFD for the Boom
would not. They're identical except for the width. I recall looking
at a spec sheet for the VFD when someone posted a link a couple years

I think the single argument that can possibly excuse dropping the VFD
technology is the fact it was using too much power. But then I expected
to see something like an e-paper type screen as a replacement.
Certainly something a bit more sophisticated and practical than the
LCDs we have now.

SB3 is a four year old device that had an original MSRP of $299.
Touch replaced the SB3 and has an MSRP of $299, in
