Could you not set the volume on the touch to a fixed 100% and manage the
speaker volume via Sonos?

Yes small active stereo speakers , if out of space place them close
together it will then be as a Sonos ?

Two speakers will not work in my kitchen space...either the speakers are
too large or do not have the looks...

Sounds like what's happening is that the Sonos does line level sensing
to check whether something's playing on line in so you need a certain
minimum volume.
Once line-in is enabled it will stay open until you are below a certain
other level for a longer time to have the Sonos switch off.

I have a SB Touch connected to a Sonos Play 5 via line in and control
music via iPeng. The problem I have is that I when I start with a low
volume (under 30% or so), I need to increase the volume level in iPeng
before I can hear any music from the Sonos. When I then change the
volume back to
