Is there now a way to have iTunes control SC somewhat (at least the
simple functions like play, next, choose songs etc...)?
I still find the SC interface too clunky

Squeezeplay as a controller works really well, playback has issues but
that shouldn't matter if playing back through on of your squeezebox
receivers.

What OS are you running? If Windows, have you looked at the Moose front
end for Squeezecenter, which is more like iTunes?
