Strangely the front panel still showed the correct 00:04... MAC address.
However some combination of a factory reset and changing the MAC
address to something else and then back seems to have cured the odd
behaviour. Just going through the edit MAC screen without changing
the 00:04... number did
Do you have any bridges? Many times that can cause much confusion.

No, no bridges. dhcp server is also the wireless access point.

This is odd. 20:04:b4:00:00:0c is not a registered MAC address
(20:04:b4 is not in the ethernet database).
Perhaps an update to the firmware will resolve, or a reset?
My ethereal output shows correct values for the client mac address;
your unit clearly is misbehaving.
