FWIW, I think I might have solved the problem.
I had downloaded Squeeze Control, Squeeze Commander, and Orange Squeeze
to my Samsung phone in order to compare them.
I didn't consider that having three squeezebox controller apps running
simultaneously might "confuse" things...now that I've uninst
Haven't messed with the AV suite since I set it up originally.
The music drive is on the exclusion list as far as AV activity goes.

Have you perhaps "upgraded" your Anti Virus software recently ?
Try the suggestions above but also check to see whether your USB drive
is excluded from Anti-Virus on-demand scanning. Try switching off AV
altogether (temporarily) for testing.

One thing I notice is that LMS now starts up a whole lot faster than it
did before - used to take a few minutes to start up on a reboot, and now

Have you tried restarting LMS itself when the problems begin? That would
tell you whether its LMS rather than something happening elsewhere
within the computer that is the source of the problem.

Recently (within the last month or so), web interface becomes
unresponsive seemingly at random. Click to play a new album and nothing
happens. Or the album will show up in the currently playing list, with
