I've always wondered why there is a 'download' link in the songinfo
page. What's the idea behind this?
- I always listen to my own collection, so there's no need to download
tracks that I already got.
- I use the squeezebox at work to listen to my collection at home, and
though they can listen

I personally have no idea (its been there since before I came along),
but I've seen the complaints when it didn't work.

my personal stance would be to avoid all download and upload of song
files via slimserver.
Mine too. That seems a little outside the core functionality to me.
Obviously someone wanted it enough to implement it, though.
