Thanks! That was indeed the problem as I had 7.1 on Ubuntu and 7.0 on
Vista. As I've just had the problem with the scanner.exe and the 7.1 on
vista, I have now downgraded to the 7.0 everywhere (2 laptops with dual
boot) and it doesn't need any update when I change OS or laptop.

But you don't have to update anything when you switch OS. The key is to
make sure that you have _the_same_version_ of slimserver/squeezecenter
on each OS, and on each computer. Then just leave it that way. When you
want to upgrade to a newer version, upgrade all of them to the same
version.
