It seems unlikely, the Boom feels to me to have better quality bass

Re: [slim] ReplayGain - How effective?

2011-07-28 Thread MrSinatra

i've been using it for several years now, and i find it works pretty
well.

one thing to look for, is peak values, the forgotten RG tags. using
those is how it avoids clipping, and so a track might be played back
quieter than it otherwise would be, to avoid the clip. usually not an
issue, but if something sounds too quiet it might have a momentary loud
spike in it or something like that.

the internet radio thing is an old complaint, vote for this bug:

and

and

having said all that, i do find that sometimes some things seem louder
or quieter than all the rest, BUT for the most part, i think it does
its job and does it well.

ps. i would also like to see a RG pre-amp so a user can adjust the

are not affected by this. Like you say uninstalling SP1 allows the

but unfortunately only the classic skin remains in 7.6. So if you want
to reinstall SP1 try the classic skin or if you find an alternative
solution that allows the default skin to work I would love to know it.

The only advantage of Logitech doing this would be that they can
probably lower the price a bit, since they will be able to distribute
it to more stores and sell more units. However, I'm pretty sure that in
all other aspects the current VortexBox appliance systems are going to
offer better and more functionality.

In my mind, it's a lot bigger chance that Logitech realize this as:
- A Touch II (with faster CPU and more memory with a reliable built-in

or
- A Receiver II (with faster CPU and more memory with a reliable

I believe that a Boom11 would be the logical next step. A self-contained
stereo device to keep compatible with the Touch and Radio. After all,
the Boom is no longer available through Logitech. I have 2 Booms but I
would grab up a Boom made on the same platform (is that the correct
term?) as the Touch and Radio.

I do not think Logitech would dump the Internet Radio devices. They are

If someone who don't understand them is in charge, that could easily
happen if they plan to sell the Revue for $99.

Revue $99:
- Support for video
- Support for music (local and online)
- Support for pictures
- Support for viewing and recording TV

Squeezebox Touch $299:
- Support for music (local and online)

I could easily see someone within Logitech management think, hmm, why
do we need this expensive music box which when we have the Revue which
is cheaper and can do so much more...

Of course, when you know the products it's a different situation, but I
doubt there are many (if even anyone) within Logitech management who
really understands what the Squeezebox products is all about.

However, if they drop the Harmony remotes, which is mentioned as
something they have had problems selling in the linked article in the
initial post, I would be very sad, because that really is an excellent
product. I wonder if I should get an Harmony One while it still
exists...

Hopefully they will just drop the Revue and invest those resources on
Squeezebox and Harmony improvements instead :-)

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator v3

2011-07-28 Thread Roger66

Hello,

I've just updated to SBS 7.6.0 under Win XP SP3. ACC doesn't work
anymore - SQL error. As far as I understand, I have to edit the my.tt
again now.

Sorry for this dumb question, but what is the right editor for the
my.tt under windows ?

With regular windows editor there are no separate lines, even with
carriage return enabled. There is a block of text instead. I cant see
the beginning of the line to put the # in front of. Shall I replace
the = with # ?

Can U help me please ?

ACC 3.4 and its predecessors are built to work with MySQL databases.
SbS 7.6 has moved on to use SQLite so current versions of ACC won't
work. I believe that 'SilverRS8' is in the process of updating ACC to
work with SQLite and SbS 7.6.

I believe there should be an option in the settings to use MySQL
instead of SQlite. You must have an available MySQL instance somewhere
to be able to do so. In that case ACC should work. If not I'll look
into it when 7.6 is released. Regarding the release, if you look in the
developer threads, it is uncertain when and if it will be released. If
may be that SBS is replaced by LMS (Logitech Media Server). A lot of
SBS code will ofcourse be incorporated but I will wait for making ACC
compatible until things are more clear.

Did you try the brightness button on the remote? I think the off and on
brightness values are separate settings, so just cos it's correct when it's
on, doesn't mean it's correct when it's off.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you can use the Brightness button
on the SB3's remote to change the brightness on the Boom. I know I've
used the SB3's text size button this way. You can also alter the
brightness settings on the SBS web ui, under Settings Player.
Likewise for mysb.com.

I found after switching to 7.6.0 that a lot of my brightness modes were
changed and needed to be changed back to what I wanted. But none of them
were broken.

[slim] Everything is broken since 7.6 update

2011-07-28 Thread Hercules

The upgrade to v7.6 seems to have broken everything...

I was prompted to upgrade the firmware on my Squeezebox radio and:
- it no longer listed any music
- when I played music by folder I was unable to change the volume
(fixed at max)

Similarly I have just upgraded the Squeezebox and:
- it doesn't show any music either

When I try to rescan nothing happens...

I'm sure there are other problems but I thought I'd report these asap.

Re: [slim] MonkeySqueeze

2011-07-28 Thread stumble

@Muele

I was the same when I first got MediaMonkey way back in 2008/9.

Then, whenever I was at the PC tagging files I would end up playing
some tracks using MediaMonkey, while I worked on tagging. The problem
was that PC speakers are mediocre and the hassle of plugging the laptop
into the Hi-Fi was offputting, to say the least.

I found a few scripts on the MediaMonkey Forum and cobbled them
together into something that worked for me. It changed the whole
experience by routing what ever I was playing on MediaMonkey to my
Squeezebox Server and in turn my various players around the house. This
was all way back in 2009 and I was using it so often I almost forgot the
script exists.

Anyway - July 2011 and Ginegernut63, with some small contribution from
myself, enhanced the script and got it released as a MediaMonkey addon
called MonkeySqueeze for all Squeezebox / MediaMonkey users to access
without the hassle of trying to cobble together bits of code from the
various MediaMonkey Forum posts.

MonkeySqueeze doesn't replace Squeezebox Server but it just means that
the program (MediaMonkey) used on the PC for all that tagging, clever
playlist creation and the day-job type stuff can finally talk-to the
SBS and sound good. The bonus, of course is connecting the laptop to
the Hi-Fi doesn't need to even be considered an option.

I would say it's a perfect partnership and one I had taken for granted
for 2 years or so.

If you haven't tried MonkeySqueeze with MediaMonkey and Squeezebox
Server give it a whirl and see how it goes. I couldn't imagine
MediaMonkey without it and it gives Squeezebox Server an extra
dimension regarding real-time playlist.

cheers

Re: [slim] Logitech CEO Steps down

2011-07-28 Thread MrSinatra

maybe this is why 7.6 came out now, so they could move on to LMS and
support the revue, b/c the revue is the future while audio only
products are the past.

i've been saying for a long time now that they needed a cheap audio
endpoint, and the revue could be one (with video as a bonus). if they
do get honeycomb into it, it could rescue the product.

make no mistake, the current situation is very bleak, and this could
all not only end badly, but end quickly. however, a LMS server, that
can do upnp / dlna / audio/video and operate with a $99 honeycomb
powered endpoint is VERY appealing to me, and i think others, if it in
fact works well.

frankly, i'm shocked anyone is buying a touch at all. to me, the
writing is on the wall for that kind of thing.

one last point... maybe they will run LMS IN the revue... turn LMS
into an android app the way they did SP. just a thought...

I soon will need to add a couple more music devices to my collection.
Unfortunatly this type of news does not make be want to go out an buy a
logitech device at the moment. Fortunatly I can wait a few months to
see what happens.

What I could use is another boom, touch, plus the addition of a radio
since I do not own one yet. I may just buy the radio and wait and see,
worse case it can be used via mysqueeze if I decide to go another route
for my music system. My existing SB Classics and Boom will go up for
sale at that point. I prefer not going with Sonos' due to cost, but at
some point the stability of the company does play into the decision.

There was at one time an option in SBS 7.6 settings to select either
MySQL or SQLite - SQLite was selected by default. This option was
removed some time ago but it is still possible to use MySQL by altering
something in one of the SbS config files. Can't remember where but I'm

Interesting an equivalent price drop for the existing SB Touch
would not be out of line. Btw, I think the review for $99 is a better
deal than buying a Harmony One. Correct me if I'm wrong... because I've
not read the specs of the Revue in a while. But... if I remember
correctly, the Harmony Remote engine is already in the review along
with IR blasters. All you need is the Harmony discrete codes for your
model Squeezebox and AV system to control everything with single
remote.

[slim] What's the Connection? Community and Logitech

2011-07-28 Thread castalla

The ongoing 7.6 fiasco set me thinking. Just what is the connection
between this Forum and Logitech? Just seems that some posters here
seem to have 'insider' knowledge, and certainly the Logitech support

I think some clarificaton of any 'relationships' would be useful for

Why do you care?
This is NOT the official Logitech support forum; AndyG and Michael
Herger are Logitech employees / devs who post here as does Mickey Gee
(occasionally). A lot of vital work goes through this forum in terms of
beta testing software and hardware. Also, third-party plugins are
supported through here.
Some of us have been on here for many years and have an in-depth
knowledge of various aspects of the products.

This is a self-help forum and one of the best of its kind IME.

It is NOT the place for unproductive emotional rants or moaning about
bugs or other matters - that should go on the official forum.

What else do you need to know?

Thanks.

The total lack of any responses to posts on the Logitech Forum to the

I don't take kindly to responses which claim greybeard status and
implicitly question 'What you complaining about, whippersnapper ... ?'

If you are so experienced in beta testing how the heck did you not
advise that an official release of 7.6 should be delayed?

I have an earlier iteration of 7.6 on an arm machine - no problems
co-existing with the 7.5.5 on Windows

An official release usually implies that it won't totally reduce the
end-user's system to chaos. If it does, then a rapid retraction and
apology is in order together with clear instructions on how to recover
from the ruins of chaos!

Just my 2 (euro)cents worh.

There was no opportunity given. In the past a release candidate was
proposed and time was given to highlight possible issues. AFAICT 7.6
was released without a release candidate or any warning that release
was due.

From the 2010 financial statements:

Sales of Audio products - $454,957,000
Sales of everything - $1,966,748,000

Audio as a % of total sales - 23%

So this is a large enough segment for the CEO to be thinking about. But
I suspect squeezebox products are only a small part of the larger
category of audio products

[slim] Probably the Worst Update in The World ...

2011-07-28 Thread castalla

... with apologies to the famous Carlsberg adverts!

In over 20 years of IT, this 7.6 mess has to be way up at the top of
the Top Ten utter and total disasters! and absolutely no clues on how
to recover from the fiasco!

I have tried everything to re-establish 7.5.5 as it was (reinstalls,
factory resets, cold reboots, etc) and still the stupid system refuses
to accept my settings for the Info Browser. Oh yes, it's there on the
web interface - but will the damn thing show up on the Touch, will it
hell!

So can any guru (with years of experience!) please tell vme how to get
back to the day I unpacked the Touch and set it up?

Simply uninstalling the sbs server is obviously a waste of time - the
damn thing still wants to update to 7.6 even though the server is 7.5.5
.

It's 4:15 am and I've spent hours uninstalling, reinstalling,
resetting, and screaming at the damn thing. Help Please??

It only knows that 7.6 exists because there is something telling it
that it exists. You never got messages before updating to 7.6 before
the release, right? So,

1) delete everything having to do with 7.5.x and 7.6 from your system.
Assuming you're still using Ubuntu, doing only apt-get purge
squeezeboxserver may not be enough. After apt-get purging, then dig
into the /var/lib/squeezeboxserver , /etc/squeezeboxserver, etc to
thoroughly clean it out.

2) when you re-install SBS, turn off the automatic notification of
software update before you do anything else

3) never, ever, ever connect to mysqueezebox.com.

That should give you a fighting chance.

These forums were the original Slim Devices forums and were taken over

exactly why now... maybe it was a Harmony RF remote and I needed an IR

Harmony One - Hard buttons combined with small touch screen
Revue - Touch screen and barely any hard buttons

That makes them a gigantic difference to me.

If one planned to get the Harmony 1000, it would maybe be smart to wait
for the lower priced Revue. If you planned to get the Harmony 900
because you need RF, the situation is also a bit different because
currently the 900 feels pretty expensive and even more so if you can
get a Revue with Wifi remote for $99

Maybe the Revue price drop could affect Harmony prices, but I don't
think so. When you read why they are dropping the Revue price you
realize it's because it's a new market and they want to establish the
product, this isn't they case for the Harmony remotes, they are already
in an established market and they have both fairly cheap and more
expensive models.

Logitech is a big company who doesn't prioritize talking to customers
in public. Not much different than other big companies. Apple silently
denied the iPhone antenna problem for months, and similar scenarios can
probably also be seen on a lot of other big companies.

Logitech not answering in the official support forum or this community
forum doesn't mean they don't help users, there are varied experience
with contacting their support, some good some really bad, but every one
that registers a support case will get some kind of answer on his/her
issue and can be sure someone is working on investigating it. So if you
want support, you need to register a support case.

Logitech is traditionally a hardware company, their developers,
especially those involved in Squeezebox, understand software
development but there are IMHO strong indications that their management
doesn't.

Just be aware of that you probably have never seen such response from
any Logitech employee. When reading the official support forum it's
important to realize that there are also normal users like you and me
over there trying to answer questions and some of us sometimes gets
frustrated and give bad responses because we aren't trained support
personnel. We are just tired of all complaints and tired of Logitech
not doing proper testing of their products.

castalla;644561 Wrote:

1.
The release was a surprise to us so we really didn't get the chance, I
think no one expected them to suddenly release 7.6 it felt like the
release was at least a month away, probably more.

2.
We did indicate it didn't work, I think there were only one beta tester
that argue that something should be released soon and as I've understood
that person hadn't even tried 7.6 so IMHO he didn't really know what he
was talking about in this case.

3.
I personally suspect that not even the Logitech developers sometimes
available on this forum was involved in the release decision. I'm 99%
sure none of them would recommend their management to release the
product at the state they knew it was before the release. It's
important to realize that Logitech is a big corporation and sometimes
the communication between different parts doesn't really seem to work
particularly good.

I think more or less every community member and every Logitech
developer available on this forum agree with you, almost none of the
beta testers would have recommended Logitech to release 7.6.

However, Logitech's strategy to keep mysqueezebox.com in sync with SBS
makes it really hard to revert a release when it has been done, because
it will be chaos also if they revert 7.6 because:
- If they keep mysqueezebox.com at 7.6, users rolling back 7.5 are
going to be asked to upgrade their firmware when they switch to
mysqueezebox.com.
- If they rollback mysqueezebox.com to 7.5, users which have upgraded
to 7.6 and is happy with it, is going to be asked to downgrade their
firmware to 7.5 as soon as they switch to mysqueezebox.com.

So based on this I think:
- The only way for Logitech to solve this mess is to release a 7.6.1
version that works as soon as possible.
- We will never see any public apologies, Logitech doesn't communicate
with end users that way, never have, never will.
- The management within Logitech might not even know it's a problem,
because as previously said, the communication between different parts
really doesn't work. I believe it's a lot bigger chance the management
get to know there is a problem if everyone picks up the phone and call
their official support so it's completely overloaded with angry
customers.
- Complaining on this community forum is completely pointless, there is
no one from Logitech reading and forwarding these complains to the
management within Logitech. Some of the Logitech developers will see
the complains, because they do sometimes read this forum, but the only
thing the complaints are going to accomplish is making the developers
more frustrated, less happy with their management and all this will
just make it even harder for them to focus at fixing all the bugs so we
can get a 7.6.1 release. Complain to the official Logitech support or
the official support forum is a completely different matter, that will
raise the chance of someone within the

I completely understand your frustration, at 4.15 am I'd strongly
recommend you to go to sleep and continue tomorrow unless you life
depends on it.

If you want step by step guidance, contact the official Logitech
support team and ask them to guide you through the process of
downgrading to 7.5.5. You will find the Support link at the top of
this forum. Note, I'm not talking about the support forum, I'm talking
about registering a support case.

As aubuti says, the general process of downgrading is to:
1. Uninstall everything and make sure there aren't anything left
2. Re-install 7.5.x
3. Don't connect to mysqueezebox.com as that will prompt you to upgrade
to 7.6 again.

I think the re-installation after a factory reset is going to be a
little bit confusing because:
- When setting up the Touch the first time, it's going to connect to
mysqueezebox.com and ask you to upgrade to 7.6 unless it's already
using 7.6, just let it continue to do the upgrade.
- Later in the process, when you have setup your local SBS 7.5.x and
connect the Touch to it, you will be able to downgrade the Touch
firmware to 7.5.5 and you have reach your goal.

If you need more details regarding the uninstallation, the Logitech
support staff will be able to guide you through it if you register a
support case.

And just to be clear, if anyone else is reading this, for anyone using
the Touch without a local SBS on a computer I'm not even sure it will
work reliably to downgrade to 7.5.x. I suspect it will connect to
mysqueezebox.com and try to upgrade every time the Touch is started or
the USB drive is disconnected/unavailable.

erland, with all due respect, I think you're barking up the wrong tree
with respect to the iPhone's so-called antenna problem. There were
pretty conclusive demonstrations by Apple and third parties that just
about any phone can be held in such a way to block parts of the
antenna. It was really pretty overblown.

With regards to 7.6, I have no idea if it will turn out to be a
disaster or not for the Squeezebox line, but if it hurts Squeezebox
sales the way the so-called iPhone antenna problem has impacted iPhone
4 sales, then Logitech will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Just remember that the only thing that's fact is that the CEO is going
to change and they have indicated they will lower the price on the

What do you know about the CEO of any competitor ?
Will Apple change CEO soon (Steve has been a bit sick, you know) ?
Do you even know who is CEO for Sonos ?

I bet there are a lot of guesses also about Apple and Sonos future
products, just not on this forum.

with respect to Apple, it appears that Steve Jobs is still very much
running the company, and that his health, though taking a lot of his
time, is not necessarily precarious. So the Apple-watchers are
expecting that Jobs will continue as the head of Apple for quite a
while longer.

With the exception of an astoundingly speculative article a couple of
weeks ago in the WSJ that seems to have been published to manipulate
Apple's stock price, there isn't really any doubt among the analysts
about who the next CEO of Apple will be, though - it will be current
COO Tim Cook, who is extremely respected inside and outside of Apple.

Yes I know, I was just trying to say that unless Steve Jobs (which I
respect) or Steve Ballmer (which I don't respect) becomes CEO of
Logitech, the CEO of Logitech really have doesn't have much impact if
I'll purchase Logitech devices or not. I certainly didn't get a
Squeezebox because of the current or previous Logitech CEO.

The CEO might of course have impact on how much resources they spend on
music streaming products, but in the end we are all going to be better
of if someone who believes, understands and make good economical
results on the products, independent if that's Logitech or someone
else. If Logitech would downsize music streaming products even more it
would just create an opening for some other company to fill the space.
So as I said previously, independent of which decisions the new CEO
makes regarding music streaming products, most of them are going to be
positive in one way or another.

I agree, it might have been a bad example, I was just trying to say
that big companies usually don't talk to the public before they have a
solution to the problem, many of them don't talk about problems in
public at all, because it's bad for the business to admit you've done
something wrong, especially when you can't offer a solution that will
fix the issues.

Apple more or less silently denied the problem until they knew what was
causing it, had a comparison with other phones and had a solution to it
by offering free cases to everyone who was affected by the problem.
However, I do believe they handled it nicely in the end, because to me
it just showed me that they really care about the experience their
customers get. In comparison, Logitech continues to show more or less
visible that they don't care about my music experience. The only people
within Logitech that sometimes do show that they care are the Logitech
developers available on this community forum.
