Start by cleaning out all of your previous Squeezebox and Firefox
I added http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4/iot/rss.xml to the
list of podcasts and all the available ones are listed perfectly. They
appear to play, but I get no sound - am I missing something? I'm
running Squeezebox Server 7.5.4 r32171

Hi, I have a very strange problem, after reorganizing my very large
library (more than 43000 songs) from three separate hard disks to a
single one I cleaned up my db and done a full scan. The libray scan
finds all the songs and the albums but no artist is present at all! My
system is a windows xp

Yes, that is not working though. I press the button and it blinks red
fast and then slow (as it should) but the device does not go into init
mode, it sticks with the wait_wireless message.

There are many reports of the scanner failing in 7.5.4 and windows xp.
Some work arounds are posted over in the squeezebox server forum on
this board.

Mine is set to 'only show tracks or albums matching the selected genre
for an artist'.
The suggested approach relies on knowledge of the genre, which I'm
trying to avoid. Also, I'm not sure it can work if the artist has
multiple genres (as I think I could only pick one).

Right. That means filtering is enabled. It should be easy to see the
effects of this if you have albums tagged with different genres.
