Mice are for everybody, SBs are not, they are too complex for most
individuals.

Actually, my first attempt to build a SBS was aimed to learn Linux
playing around during the holidays in 2006. Thanks to SB, I have now a
window$ free home and office!

Also, hi-fi is for some people, video is for everybody.
Just look at how many (real) hifi dealers are still in business in the
last 20 years.

My aim with SB, was finding a bridge between my quality hifi system,
and internet radio and music library.

I listen more to radio than to my own library, but don't even know what
SB.com is all about, I am pretty happy listening to national broadcasts
from all over the world.

That said, I don't think that Logitech is the best company to manage a
niche business.

I hope the original Slim Devices founder will get it back..

Re: [slim] Good Squeezebox alternative?

2011-12-03 Thread Pascal Hibon

I hear many people (on this forum but also on other discussion forums)
that the big disadvantage of Squeezebox is the requirement to have a
(local) server. I believe that many people are missing the fact that
every streaming system needs a server. But people only complain about
that when looking at Squeezebox. Most Hifi players need a DLNA server
and even Sonos needs a server. With Sonos this server functionality is
done by one of the players. Since their server is running on a low
powered platform (just like TineSC in the Touch), it has some
limitations. I'm not familiar with AirPlay but I'm pretty sure that
system will need an iTunes server somewhere.

I believe that the SBS / LMS server requirement is an advantage over
the other systems. The Squeezebox protocol is more robusthank it is
really designed for streaming systems. It also adds a ton of positive
things when it comes to user experience. I have looked at other
streaming alternatives. I have even used a Sonos player a few months
back. Up until today I haven't found a good alternative for Squeezebox.
Logitech still has the advantage but too bad they don't realize it yet.
For Squeezebox to become more popular it will need a company that puts
high priority on this product line. Add more players and address the
market to achieve more visibility. Unfortunately, a company that makes
mice and keyboards is not the right company for the Squeezebox product.

A good point . very similar to my own experience .

However the online experience can be for everyone and that sells
squeezeboxes and it not to hard.

Here we have

*sometimes unreliable mysqueezebox.com servers (have improved greatly
,but I migth eat my words xmas is soon here then everyone wants to
listen online ).
If logitech is on top of these issues it would be great.

* Your wifi, if it sucks it sucks what can logitech ever do about that
? seriously ?

To run your local file collection it takes some actual music interest
(not casual background listening ) and posibly also some rudimentary
sense of soundquality to muster the energy to make it go :)

The ripping managing and -proper tagging and artwork- is the real work
. A couple of hours now and then to whack the admittedly to buggy
server in to shape pales compared to the time spent with your files .

I understand why folks go for online services only if lacking the kind
of music hobby interest some of us got bitten with .

Most people I know would just run a wire from the PC and listen to
spotify

ALL excellent points.

Pascal Hibon;674253 Wrote:

Very true. Even the devices with built in internet radio and/or
services use a server. Like the networking AVR's which typically use
Reciva or vTuner in the background. If no local server and vTuner is
down then my AVR cannot stream anything from the internet.

The difference is that most people either don't know there is a server
at work or they don't need to care about it because these servers are
very reliable and very simplistic in features and usage. This is where
LMS and MySB struggle because they are far more complex, far more
customizable, offer many more services and features, updated often (to
both add features and fix issues), etc... Which in turn seems to make
them far less reliable for the average user.

That said, I've had very few issues with either LMS or MySB, but
obviously not everyone can say that. :(

[slim] iTunes playlist can't be found on my QNAP nas

2011-12-03 Thread NasDonkey

Hi all,

I bought the squeezebox reciever last week. It took me a while to get
it up and running. I finally used my friends remote of his duet and
then it was working really quick.
But now it all works exept the playlists i use in iTunes.

What do i have/use?
- QNAP 239P nas system
- SBS 7.6.1
- iPad with Squeezepad
- iPhone with iPeng

All my music files is stored on the QMultimedia share in a iTunes
folder. I can see the folders with artists names in this folder.
I can see al my music in Squeezepad and iPeng, so no problem there! At
least i think...
I guess there must be something wrong with the export/import of the
playlist. But i have no idea where to look to solve this annoying
problem.
Any help is more than welcome!!

Regards, Don

That kind of signal fluctuation indicates a serious signal issue. With
such signal issues I'd question whether or not you are even connecting
to YOUR WiFi, might be accessing a neighbors WiFi.

Is your server computer wired?

Haphazardly picking different ch's may make things worse. Only start
changing ch's AFTER you have correctly diagnosed what other WiFi
signals are around you, and only choose (decide on) ch's 1 or 6 or 11.

2011-12-03 Thread boun01

Thank you Squeezebox to help me to clear the living room. I get rid of
tuner and cd player. My disks are now in shoesboxes in a storage
place.

I truly enjoy the quality of sound of this device, even from Internet
radios.

Also, it's far more easy to listen music from Squeezebox Server than a
from a CD collection. And, for a classical music lover, the internet
radios open a rich world. I listen more music with Squeezebox.

I didn't experienced the problems noted with the server updates.
Perharps I was lucky. But I am not a power user. I use the server
only to listen two or three FM internet radios and to browse my
classical music by folders (composers).

Finally, I was impressed by the Logitech Service. I bought a SB3 two
years ago. After one year, the display disappeared in the middle of the
screen. They shipped me a Touch to replace the faulty unit! Now the
sound is better and I have a weather Station when the Touch is off.

I would like to add that, because it is fitted with a quality DAC, and
you can even add an external one, while somewhat inexpensive, the SB
leaves the door open to a high-end upgrade.

This cannot be an argument for those that are happy to listen to their
plain iPods, which are the vast majority.

About running a server at home, it can have many scopes: I use it to
backup my laptop, store pictures, music, security camera images, stream
video to the TV or other networked PCs, FTP, web, and SB server.

Fantastic thread. I wonder how many other products can boast such a
thread.

For my own part, I still have the feeling that I came to the party a
bit late - I think my first SB product was an SB3, probably about 6
years ago, although I do have a couple of earlier models that I THINK I
bought off ebay later on, one of which I took apart and built into my
DIY pre-amp. I still have the SB3 in regular use, alongside a Touch, a
Boom and a couple of Radios.

Like most people here, the SB ecosystem reignited my passion for music,
and I'm sure this is what led to me building my own pre-amp, power amp
and speakers. Without a doubt though, the stand-out feature for me is
the ability to have the whole house blasting out the same music in
perfect synch. It still makes me smile when my kids tell me to turn my
music down. In my day it was the other way round!

Slim Devices changed my life.

I have always been an avid listener, LPs, CDs, radio, and short wave
broadcasts.

Slim Devices brought short wave listening up to high end stereo.

I listen to BBC, France Musique or Radio Orfey from Moscow at CD
quality.

I have a few SB2, SB3, Radio and Touch.

I am very fond of the white SB3 I have with the Slim Device logo.

It was a pain to see it go to Logitech, they are too big to manage such
a jewel.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback now on ANDROID! SqueezePlayer released to the market ...

2011-12-03 Thread ja2038

Hi,

I'd like to see a widgetized version of squeeze player, one that might
create a small widget capable of:

1) turning squeeze player on and off
2) adjust volume by slider
3) showing current album artwork
4) supporting any relevant android widget audio controller standards.

This would let me configure a screen on my tablet for home audio and
have squeeze player share that screen with audio manager, equalizer,

Have you considered writing an app that would stream whatever was

I could almost do it with Bluetooth to a bluetooth device that has line

and limited to the short range of bluetooth. I would rather do it over
 wifi.

Just thinking how nice it would be to stream synced Audible books all
over the house. The only way I can do it now is to plug the phone into
the line in on the server and just leave it there (still has the 10s
delay but it works today, just can't pause/jump around without walking
 back to that device).

 Mike

I think your suggestion is brilliant, although I suspect there will
still be that difficult delay.

Another way to do stream now, apart from line-in, that has almost no
advantages over what you suggest, except for allowing streaming of ANY
audio stream, is to use VLC.

I have a cygwin shell script that looks like this on my machine
workstation:

#!/bin/bash
/cygdrive/c/Program\ Files\ \(x86\)/VideoLAN/VLC/vlc.exe --no-video
--no-sout-video dshow:// :dshow-vdev=none :dshow-adev=Stereo Mix
(Realtek High Defini :dshow-caching=200 --sout
#transcode{vcodec=none,acodec=mp3,ab=128,channels=2,samplerate=44100}:http{dst=:8080/vlcstream.mp3}
:no-sout-rtp-sap :no-sout-standard-sap :ttl=1 :sout-keep

And then on my squeeze server machine I listen in on the url:

http://workstation:8080/vlcstream.mp3

There is still a 10 second delay, but it allows me to stream anything
on that workstation machine around my place.

Regardless, I like your idea.

Re: [slim] Presets buttons on an Android App

2011-12-03 Thread Michael Herger
In fact, I think I'm looking for something where you don't have to go
back and forth constantly in the menus and sub-menus. I just want to
stay always on the same interface (don't know if i'm clear, my english
 is limited)

Don't worry, you're very clear about your idea! And it's interesting, as
some similar concepts recently have been discussed here...
