[slim] Can I stream my music over the internet?
Hi I have the media server running on my mac, life is good. What I want to do it is be able to stream my music, from my mac, over the internet, to my mac book when I'm on holiday. Can it be done? And if so how? Hi, its pretty easy. Open SSH in your firewall and make it accessable from the internet (Like PAT). Download softsqueeze (java app). You can configure to tunnel it via ssh to your LMS. With this solution I hear all my music at work.:-) Mr. Floppy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29772 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96006 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

However Spotify have yet to turn a profit and it is doubtful that unlimited streaming for as little as $10 a month is sustainable in the long term. I think quite soon we may see sharp rises in the cost of on-line music access combined with more rigorous enforcement against pirates. In the UK P2P is already severely constricted by most IPs making getting music through illegal torrents impractical. I have also analysed the quality of the streams from Spotify as they sometimes sound rather strange through my hi-fi, particularly when compared with a CD rip of the same recording. It is quite clear that many streams are not 320kbs and pretty well all have dynamics squashed through heavy compression. Spotify sound is closer to low quality FM Radio than CD. [slim] Solving a playlist issue and Raspberry pi
Right, I have had squeezeboxes for years and have intergated them into my house everywhere. From the bathroom to the kitchen. The one thing that i would love to solve is the playlist issue. I currently have a MAC running itunes with a library on a Readynas DUO NAS drive. LMS server is running on that. I create playlists in itunes and i can see them on the squeezeboxes. So you are probably thinking 'well what is the problem'. Well. I am a bit of a perfectionalist and would like to know if therre is anyway of creating a playlist on the squeezeboxes and syncing it back to itunes. So thats my first question. However, i am now considering changing my whole setup, because the ReadyNAS takes a while to populate playlists. So here is where i need some advice. I have ordered a Raspberry PI and am going to experiment with squeezeplug. I am also considering getting another one to use as a media centre using XBMC. My ideal, perfect setup would be to be able to create playlists from anywhere (squeezebox,pc,xbmc, android) and for them to be available anywhere. I am open to suggestions and am happy to ditch itunes if you can help me solve this problem. Basically I hate the fact that i have to sit in front of my MAC to create a playlist and given that I am considering XBMC i cant imagine that will read itunes playlists anyway so am happy to go back to the drawing board. I also definately want so have the music stored on a remote server so that i dont have to turn on the pc when i want to listen to music ( which is what i currently have ). Any ideas would be greatfully received. UPDATE: I've added the SSH port forwarding service on my Virgin Media superhub to point to my local LMS machine. Then I've added a dyndns host to so that my WAN address is visible and have a dyndns client running on the LMS machine. I have enabled SSH by enabling Remote Login on the LMS (by the way it's running Snow Leopard). I've managed to via SSH login via a remote client using putty but the SoftSqueeze refuses to connect. I use to buy alot of Cd's when you could only hear small clips of the music on the album. Now I use MOG for discovering the albums I really like to purchase and even with the 120 bucks/yearly I pay for it,I am definitely saving money by not buying albums I consider ok but not great. Now if streaming went to 20/month,I might drop this cd selection method. jhonsber...@msn.com's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4438 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Can I stream my music over the internet?
If you use SSH you'd have to set up a tunnel, don't know how to make SqueezePlay use that. I would use a VPN or plain port forwarding. Regarding port forwarding, here's another guide, I've written it for iPeng but it applies to SqueezePlay, too. The one thing why in SqueezePlay's case it's especially important to use a VPN is that SqueezePlay (like the SBs) can't use dyndns, it can only use IP addresses (Settings-Advanced-Networking-Remote Libraries). http://penguinlovesmusic.de/2011/02/11/coolios-guide-to-remote-playback/ pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96006 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Well, you can also try to get the tunnel to work which would then expose the stream/server under localhost on a different port but that would require you to tunnel two ports (3483 and 9000) and 3483 needs to end up on 3483 again. The easiest way to set up a VPN usually is on the router itself. pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96006 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I'm also a dinosaur who likes CDs. Apple's iTunes Match makes for an interesting hybrid of the buy/rent setup. You get high quality, but not lossless, music to buy (256k AAC) and keep. And you get _all_ your existing music available on any iOS device; music that isn't in the iTunes catalogue gets transcoded to 256k AAC and uploaded to your iTunes Match account. I'll be sticking to my CDs for now though, apart from anything else they are much cheaper if you buy second hand ;) andynormancx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17417 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Whether a squeezebox or a BT speaker system appeals to you depends on what your PRIMARY music source is. If you are a high school or college kid, it's likely nowadays that your primary music source is some protable device like an iPod, andriod phone, tablet, etc. For those people, the BT speaker system would best suit their needs. For the rest of us, the squeezebox is the best fit. I've actually started using BT Audio (A2DP) in my car (2012 Volvo S60) with my Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2. I was VERY surprised by the audio quality. My ears can't tell the difference between this setup and my old 80 GB iPod hard wired into the iPod interface. Both devices have mp3 made with LAME at default settings (~190kbps I think?). So even though there is reencoding of a lossy source going on, it still sounds really good...in a car environment at least. Now when I had the trial Sirius/XM subscription, that was horrible!!! To my ears, it wasn't too much better than AM radio. So the audio system in the car can be revealing. It may be that I'm just lucky that the Samsung/Volvo combo results in a high bit rate transcode. maggior's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9080 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95977 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Completely agree and this is also the main reason why a BT (or AirPlay) solution isn't going to work for me personally, I need a single source - multiple players/controllers solution (like Squeezebox/Sonos) and not a single source/controller - single player solution (like BT or AirPlay). maggior wrote: I've actually started using BT Audio (A2DP) in my car (2012 Volvo S60) with my Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2. Just asking to get a feeling how good your car audio environment is, because if you can't hear difference between a lossless file and a 190kbps MP3 a bluetooth solution might be good enough because there might be other components limiting the system more than the bluetooth does. I'm personally fairly sure that both MP3 and bluetooth is good enough for a lot of people, the question is just if it's good enough in a listening room setup for people that really care about audio quality. For bluetooth to replace Squeezebox in my home from an audio quality perspective, its really important that it at least doesn't result in that my FLAC files sounds like MP3's or even worse. erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95977 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

No, I've never done a listening test in my car to see if I can tell the difference between mp3 and lossless in my car. Honestly, even in my home listening environment, I have to listen very closely to notice any difference so I'm sure I wouldn't hear it in the car. In the car, it's more important to me that I have variety, not the absolute best quality. As long as I don't think wow, this sounds bad when I put the music on in the car, I'm happy. Sirius XM made me think that, so I never listened to it. What I was more concerned about in the car was the impact of compounded compressed encodings of the audio stream. In my car, I couldn't hear anything. I recall reading someplace that there is (or will be soon) a version of bluetooth that supports lossless encoding of the stream. In that case, it would be theoretically possible to be lossless from the source right to the DAC in the player. That would be cool to have in the car, but even in the home, I'd still perfer my squeezebox at this point. maggior's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9080 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95977 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Generally it works well, however when my iPhone is connected through the bridge it can not see my server (touch). Same problem with the logitech app. Can anyone tell me why, and how to fix it?
