[slim] Time doesn't update with daylight savings

2012-11-21 Thread ajkidle

I run LMS on a self-made VortexBox - although I think the hardware is
the same as (or very similar to) the original VortexBox appliance -- an
Atom based MSI Nettop 100.

The problem I'm having is that when daylight savings time happens and we
gain/lose an hour, this PC clock doesn't seem to update. When the
system reboots, the time shown on my Squeezeboxen is off by an hour.
The only two solutions I know of are less than ideal:

1 - Log into the VB and force it to correct system time by connecting
to an internet time server. This only works until the next reboot.
Problematic if I were to lose power in the night... and my Radio is my
alarm...

2 - Connect a monitor and keyboard to the system and change the time in
the bios. The system is headless, so this is an annoying twice a year
ritual.

Anyone know of a more permanent fix?

And is your computer (OS) set to the tight time zone?

Is there a reason for not having the computer permanently synchronized
to internet time servers?

No reason except that I don't know how to do it. :-) I have to
manually sync to an internet time server after every reboot, whch is
what I'm trying to avoid.

How do I check to see what time zone Fedora thinks my computer is in? I
don't know why I wouldn't have chosen EST during installation, but maybe
I skipped that step by mistake.

I'll try the SSH solution - as I understand that, it's going to change
the hardware clock to be the same as the systemtime. Still not the
ideal solution, but it's easier to do that twice a year than it is to
find a monitor and keyboard to hook up to the VB. (Funny how computers
have evolved - a standalone monitor and keyboard have become a relic in
my household...)

Thanks.

Not sure about vortexbox, but there should be a file called
/etc/ntp.conf. Insert a line with server pool.ntp.org.

echo $TZ

and you should also compare the output of date and date -u (date -u
gives the time in UTC).

Re: [slim] iPeng now your audiophile App-Squeezebox for iPhone and iPad

2012-11-21 Thread ReValveiT

Hi Pippin,

I have a Squeezebox Touch, iPeng for iPad, iPhone AND the playback
feature add-on. MANY THANKS INDEED!

But I'm curious; is iPeng capable of bit-perfect audio output through a
digital dock such as the Arcam drDock? (ie: does not do any additional
resampling/reprocessing and outputs' unaltered 16/44.1 data to the
DAC).

I know the Squeezebox Touch DOES output bit-perfect. Thanks for your
answer :)

Oh, and 'ouch' on your earlier iPad Mini prediction... ;)

[slim] Server - Guest Configuratin (with Linux based: MPD, Icecast, LMS, or other)

2012-11-21 Thread ezekieldas

Greetings --I just picked up a Squeezebox Radio and am fairly happy in
what I intended to use it for (see mpd configuration below). With my
currrent configuration I am experiencing issues with 5-7sec. latency
from
the music source (server) and SB (guest). I've tried various tuning on
the Icecast stream but nothing seems to help. After reading a number of
complex articles on the latency issue I am 1) considering a different
topology 2) working on implementing something called p4sync.

Anyhow, my desired setup is music stored on Linux server, LMS 7.7.2
installed and functional (other mpd configuration described below). I
can spin off VM instances from this system of just
about any variety if that helps. Resources on this system are quite
abundant. The server currently plays music to an amp via optical
connection and amazing BW speakers. We love this setup and can
control/DJ it
remotely with the MPD setup. So in other words, it plays to the local
sound card.

I'm wondering if there's a hack for LMS that will allow multiple outs
like this: a) to the local system and b) to the SB device. And if so is
there any known latency issues with this?

MPD (Music Player Daemon) Setup

So for nearly a decade my system has been setup this way. MPD references
a 1Tb disk. It's controlled by various clients (mpm via Firefox, mpod
via iphone, another Android client, etc.). I recently
added a streaming output to an Icecast server running on the same system
in hopes that I could point the SB at it and... viola! But of course,
no, although it starts playing straight away the IC stream is
about 5-7sec. behind. I've read a bunch of stuff about this issue and it
doesn't seem like anyone has come up with a good solution. I'm currently
exchanging email with the MPD developers but also found
this which offers some hope (not easy to get it working): snarfed dot
org slash synchronizing_mp3_playback (workaround for link restriction
:-/)

So anyway, if you have any advice to offer with regards to setup that
works for you, suggestions on something to implement with what I already
have, or... whatever, I'd be very grateful.

Thank you,
-zeek

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Orange Squeeze 1.0 for Android Released

2012-11-21 Thread sbp

Hi just tried the new version, still the same problem, that Orange does
not restart wifi, if the smartphone was been idle for some time.

It is a Samsung galaxy I9100 with Android 4.0.4. what happens is that
the wifi symbol disapears from top ribbon on the Android - you know the
place where you can se the battery status, 3g status etc. However, when
I pull down the screen from the top, the wifi icon is still green.

If I press the icon (top stop the wifi) and press again to enable it -
the wifi icon re-appear next to the battery indicator and Orange can
find the wifi.

So it seems like Samsung put the wifi into sleep, when left unused for a
long time, and Orange is not able to re-enable the wifi.

Hope this is understandable.

Yep, sorry I hadn't had time to look at this for this preview release.
I'll take a look at everything relating to this next week.

I will say that if the wifi icon is not 100% enabled (i.e. not in the
top bar) then there may be a bug in the phone operating system rather
than Orange Squeeze. It would be interesting to see the logs when this
occurs, so with new new preview release, enable verbose logging and then
when you run into the problem, use an app like CatLog to send the
results to me.

Incidentally, when this happens, if you open up a web browser *without
restarting the Wifi*, are you able to browse properly?

It is probably not easy, but I believe it's possible. Sonos has done it.

but that's fine.

I'm hoping to receive suggestions on changes to the topology I described

Have you tried running squeezeplay as your software player and synching

If all the devices are Squeezebox emulators and the controlling server

sync with mpd or other non squeezebox clients though.

Suggest you try squeezeplay or squeezelite on linux with alsa outputs to
get best sync for a software client. (squeezelite:
