My long term solution is relying for as long as I can on my current
setup (1 SB3, 3 Boom, 1 SB2) and the spares I have in storage (1 Boom
and 1 SB2). If/when I'll run out of spares, I think Raspberry Pi should
suffice. I'm currently at a point in my life where I think my
SqueezeServer might end

I have had it working. Its OK but of course Windows only and means you
need a machine on and the ability to control it.
On a similar theme I have built a Pi3 with USB soundcard that takes the
output of my Hi-Fi amp and streams it as FLAC which LMS can tune in to -
I can stream Vinyl, Cassettes

This looks quite appealing - it has a long list of supported players,
including ChromeCast which would fit my needs quite well. Anyone here
