What kind of DAS and controller are you using?
150MBps isn't that fast for an array but should be plenty but I guess
seek times are more important, and that is often faster on a single
spindle.

If you can configure your modem to operate in bridged mode, I'd
consider a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router and load Tomato or DD-WRT on
it, it's a fantastic piece of kit.

Is this for backing up your music only or should your friend be able to
play your music but not share it further?
If the first, there are lots of possibilities (multipart rar files
inside a truecrypt container for example).
If it's the latter I don't think that's possible.

Did it used to work like it should? Any configuration changes?
If it's configured to use DHCP and can't find a DHCP server it will do
that.
Do you have a DHCP server on your network?

Well, the files are either cached serverside and/or in a db.
If deleting the cache doesn't work, emptying the correct table should.

Another vote for Linksys WRT54GL.
Use DD-WRT or Tomato firmware. I had ~280 days uptime before last
(manual) reboot, no problems at all.
