I have had this problem as well, for weeks, on Windows 7. I kept going
through the steps to install the upgrade until I had done this several
days in a row and it was obviously a bug. It's been going on for a
month.

I've just noticed the same..

What if you remove the server.version file from you cache/updates folder?

Yep...that's how I knew a new version was available :-) So I installed
it (aptitude-get) and it's running 7.7.1 quite happily...but it still
says a new version is available.

You could just manually copy the files to the updates directory and
restart LMS .
This is the entire contents of my updates directory:
root@music:/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache/updates# ls -al
total 8

http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.7.1/squeezebox2_137.bin
