Another thing to bear in mind is that transcoding is a heavy user of CPU cycles. However, if you play a format that your Squeezeboxes or other players can decode natively (mp3, flac, wav, ogg), you can get away with a pretty modest CPU. Usually :) -- ChrisOwens Christopher Owens QA Manager

I am running SlimCD, which is derived from Damn Small Linux on a machine with 256 MBytes of RAM and 1 Gbyte of IDE Flash. That works quite well. The music library sits on an external SeaGate 750 GByte HDD. I bought the computer here:

Extreme Tech has a review up of a 4.7 x 4.5 x 1.5-inch PC that draws 5-watts of power. IMO 256 MB of RAM would be the limiting factor as would the 500 MHz processor. For smaller music collections this looks pretty attractive for a stand alone, easily hidden server. Comes with Ubuntu 7.04
