Definitely think these videos touch on the thing that still blows me away: Squeezebox was so far ahead of it's time, it's still advanced 17+ years later! Every Squeezebox I bought over the years is still working perfectly (a decent selection - see below), and thanks to this community (and Michael in particular) they more than keep pace with changes over time. 39529 Without a doubt the best Tech Investment I've made! oh - and the Controller is arguably the only part that has become redundant thanks to Smartphones, so doesn't get a lot of love these days. In fairness it's easy to forget that the Controller was seen as a must have component for the battle with Sonos 'back in the day'sighdoes make you wonder what might have been. Blows my mind really that Squeezebox still wipes the floor with Sonos even after they've had over a decade to try to catch up!! The only obvious advantage of Roon is (slightly) less requirement for technical nous. LMS does require a very small amount of technical ability in terms of installing plugins, configuring them to work together, building RasPi endpoints from PiCorePlayer, etc. Roon has got "plug 'n' play" a little more polished. But that's it as far as I'm concerned! amey01's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11274 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=117071 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Darko Audio's recent video tribute to the Squeezebox (GOAT)
Coming from someone without any Squeezebox hardware, not only does LMS serve as an economical alternative to Roon, it also beats Roon in a few areas. UPNP/DLNA RENDERER COMPATIBILITY Lots of good audio hardware out there that only supports UPnP streaming. Generally, the user experience controlling these devices ranges from acceptable to infuriatingly awful, particularly on iOS. LMS allows us to ditch ugly, poorly implemented OEM apps, and featureless, aging third-party controllers, and instead use Material UI, a centralized library, and standard playlists. While Roon intentionally does not support these endpoints for dogmatic reasons, the fact is that there is a very strong use-case for the Roon-like experience while streaming to a single device, bit-perfectly. And on many devices that support Airplay and UPnP (HEOS for one), only UPnP will allow hi-res and DSD, whereas the "Roon tested" workaround using Airplay will not. MULTI-ENDPOINT Continuing the previous point, LMS is nearly agnostic when it comes to endpoints. I haven't found another system that will "bridge" this variety of endpoints, not only allowing music to be played on a variety of hardware, but exposing that hardware into other ecosystems (like creating an Airplay speaker from a chromecast, or UPnP renderer from an airport express.) I can't stress this point enough. Running LMS allows my family to use Apple Music on Airplay speakers around the house, while allowing me to stream local content to those same speakers. In comparison to literally any other multi-room system, either DIY (snapcast, Volumio) or off-the-shelf (Sonos, HEOS, MusiCast), I'm not locked into any one vendor and can simply piggyback off existing speakers. I find that airplay + LMS is a great match for setting up whole home audio on the cheap. I could rant and rave about how happy I am I got into LMS. Hopefully it's around a long time. mightaswell's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=71951 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=117071 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Here in France, I'm seeing this evening Touches - and not so many of them - for either side of 175 euros. Radios on the other hand are plentiful, around 55 euros. I wonder if a lot of Radios are being dumped by folk gradually discovering the WiFi6 issue? Re: [slim] Darko Audio's recent video tribute to the Squeezebox (GOAT)
... no doubt in my mind. My system remains complete stable after all these years (I think I got my first SB3 in 2005 or even 2004). Love the fact it's never support for anything that matters to me: it has a great user interface, offer awesome manual control of the music library... it perfectly surround my pretty capable audio system with everything required to build digital convenience and outsource anything else to the DAC and beyond. I'll give you a powerful example, IMO: in 2015 or so, I installed a very easy to use NAD D7050 digital integrated amp. Perfect for those who want a simple interface to music and simply control from their phone, with Spotify build-in... until NAD pulled support for the app and for Spotify. Let's face it audio vendors expertise isn't software and hence integrating into a streaming app, because they'll discontinue support after a few years. It's a story that repeats itself again and again: a streaming service changes their API some, and unless the audio vendor commits resources (and probably those resources are dedicated to their existing and future products), you're left out in the cold. The solution? I installed LMS running on an ancient Lenovo X61 that runs Linux, picked up an SB3 from one of my moving boxes (I keep Squeezebox extras :-D)... and off you go. Spotify now runs without a hitch (thanks Mr Herger!). Synchronization is one very neat thing the video seems to omit. The SB3, Touch and Boom remain my fav products. My experience with the Duet was horrific, the Controller and Receiver regularly stopped talking and one had to reset them with a weird procedure and re-boot them etc. I replaced it in the Bedroom system pronto with an SB3. :-) Back then I had 6 active SBoxen throughout the house that played in perfect synchrony, which back then amazed people. :-) On latest count, I converted over 20 friends or acquaintances to the SB system. ...pablo Server: Win10 and LMS 8.2.0 System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- KEF Reference 1 Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Touch-> NAD D7050 -> KEF LS50 + Velodyne Minivee Sub Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado RS1/Shure 1540 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=117071 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It gets used most days to control a SqueezeAMP in the kitchen which is also controlled by 2 Jogglers (at opposite ends of the room). SB2 used every morning and many evenings - screen still good but I think that is because I have screensaver set to blank it after 30 seconds, even when playing. Openpeak2 (Joggler in a bigger case and with 2 front facing speakers) sits in the bathroom and is used every day. Joggler on my desk, connected by USB to a Behringer mixer and then to HiFi Amp is probably the most used. I just put LMS on an old RPi1 to ship to a family member who currently uses a Squeezebox Radio with MySqueezebox. The LMS is to keep him running when BBC switches of Shoutcast streams next year ... hopefully they will not kill off opensource use of BBC Sounds API at the same time. Another family member is waiting for their shipping container to arrive having just changed country ... in it is their LMS on a RPi, Joggler and 2 AirPlay devices they they were using in UK ... A new SqueezeAMP from the next batch is destined for them to add to their set as they have more rooms in their new place. Grandson has a Joggler in his bedroom that connects to LMS on an old RPi 1 powered by USB socket on their router. They gave me back their SB2 (that was connected to a DJ mixing desk) because it stopped working ... turns out it was just the power supply that was faulty so it will be making the return trip soon with a replacement power brick. Another family member has another of my my old RPi with original IQaudio HAT plus 3 Jogglers - one with USB connection to good small B speakers and another to a mini HiFi and another in a bedroom using the built-in speaker. I love it. Never had a touch. I went for the Duet as an upgrade from a classic, and had frequent wireless issues, but the killer was a hardware failure with the remote charger. I like that Darko emphasizes the software and the community as a big part of his GOAT award. At the time it seemed like I was always having to reset both the controller and the receiver because the receiver had lost contact with the server for some reason. Those were the days when I was using a Windows PC and Wake On Lan and probably hadn't reserved an IP address for the server on the router so I might have better luck now with a Pi server. A great review of the Touch and the Squeeze platform! I've been happily Squeezing my music since Christmas 2008 when I got my first Duet. I now run 2 Duets, a Pi with PiCorePlayer and a Boom. Don't get the big deal about the Duets, mine run on WiFi flawlessly. I did have to replace the WiFi card in one of the Duet receivers and also a receiver power supply, but other than that they've been trouble free. Can't thank Michael, Craig, Phillip and the rest that have kept the Squeeze platform alive and relevant through the years. From my perspective the whole Squeeze music platform is G.O.A.T.!
