[slim] Help wanted to identify component on VFD board

2013-02-13 Thread chill

I'm hoping someone out there will be able to help me identify a part so
that I can repair the VFD in an old SB2. One of the aluminium
capacitors has snapped off the board, and being a surface mount
component it's physically broken and I need to get a replacement. In
the attached photo, it's part number C38, which is an aluminium
capacitor that looks identical to C37 apart from the code printed on the
case. The code on the broken part says '220 CHA 4L2'. I'm assuming
this means it's a 220 microfarad capacitor, but do the other digits give
any more details (voltage?).

This is from an SB2 that I mounted in my DIY pre-amp housing, and when I
dismantled the pre-amp to start reworking it into a miniDSP box I saw
this capacitor rattling around in the bottom. Oddly, as far as I'm
aware the VFD works without it.

Thanks
Chris

If it is Panasonic look at this data sheet
http://industrial.panasonic.com/www-data/pdf/ABA/ABACE3.pdf
HA seems to be the series and C the voltage. In this case 16V.

That's brilliant - thanks Slartibartfast.

I couldn't see a manufacturer name or ID on the case, but that certainly
seems to match the part I've got. And it's available at my local RS
('here' (http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/aluminium-capacitors/7472828/)),
although I think I'll keep looking for somewhere that might sell me
fewer than 25.

I've never done any surface mount soldering, and don't have the tools,
so I may try to borrow the one gathering dust in the store room where I
work.

Thanks again.

Farnell to the rescue:
http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?sku=1973309

They'll allow me to order a single capacitor, and it looks like shipping
is free. At 21p each I think I'll push the boat out and buy a spare one
too :)
