Two simple plugins I've used for years:
PowerSave - Shuts Squeezebox off if not being used.
ResetVolume - Start your Squeezebox at a preset volume.

Kidsplay! Essential because my kids continually screw up the preset
buttons on their Radios by holding the button down too long. Read-only
preset buttons is a life saver.
The max volume thingy came in handy as well but not as much any more...

Yes to Apple & Chromecast versions if the newbie has either device.
Upnpbridge is a bit more fiddly and can be a pain to get working if you
have an obscure device.
