As Marcus said, since this driver is not GPL compatible, it can not
be directly included in the installer, so it's a low priority to
consider.

Feel free to write to the hardware vendor and request open-source API
library / documentation so that this device can be supported in a
fully FOSS driver and distributed pre-built.

It's only if actual customers write and insist that this is important
to them that hardware vendors might do it ...

Re: [Discuss-gnuradio] GNUradio not working with SDRplay in Windows10

2017-01-13 Thread Marcus Müller
Hi Arie,

well, as said, it's not that there is inherently no way to use SDRPlay
with gr-osmosdr, but the license of the SDRPlay software makes it
impossible to ship software doing that, so that option is disabled by
default.

You're still free to build things yourself with that option enabled, but
yes, you'd have to build it yourself, I don't see an easy way to give
you what you want (though I certainly see it the other way around than
you do – SDRPlay doesn't work with GNU Radio; that's not really GNU
Radio's fault).

It's currently much easier to build GNU Radio on Linux than on Windows,
and Linux Mint should do quite fine (it's largely Ubuntu, and we test
extensively against that). In fact, we have pretty much copy
command line instructions on how to do that. You'll need to install the
SDRPlay closed source binary behorehand, and then change one file before
you start the build process, but that should do it (haven't tested it,
though).

Best regards,

Marcus

Marcus,

That is not good news. I'm not a software developper and 'API' and 'DLL'
sound like 'magic' words to me.
So as long as there's not a proper library for SDRPlay, gnuradio will
not work with this device.

I also understand that GNUradio under Linux Mint will not work with
SDRplay either?

Hi Arie,

ah, ok, now that we know where you've got your windows installation from:

As far as I can read Geof's table, the gr-osmosdr component compiled
into that package does *not* have SDRPlay support. One would need to
re-build the library and link it against the SDRPlay API DLL to make it
work.

So unless you want to take the big dive and compile that gr-osmosdr DLL
yourself (which I must admit I'd assume pretty much only Geof could help
you with, as I'm absolutely no expert on the build process behind these
binaries, I'm afraid), this won't work.

As far as I understand (but I'm not a lawyer), the SDRPlay library is
closed source and hence can't be linked to GPL code (like GNU Radio and
gr-osmosdr) and then be distributed, so Geof's hands are tied here.

Best regards,

Re: [Discuss-gnuradio] GNUradio not working with SDRplay in Windows10

2017-01-13 Thread Arie Kleingeld PA3A

Hello Marcus, Martin,

Thank you for your prompt response. Here's the story in short:

My system: Windows 10 on a I7-6700 with lots of memory.
I installed GNURadio_3.7.10.1_win64 (for Windows) first. Osmocom-source
is included that package.
_Results:_ OK, I can make sounds by using an/internal /source in
gnuradio, etc.

Then I installed the SDRUNO software (an SDR program for use with the
SDRPlay). Then plugged in the SDRplay.
_Result:_ Working OK, as it should. Good shortwave reception, as well as
VHF.

Making the last step: GNURadio and the SDRPlay hardware.
No way I can make it work. The feedback from GNURadio is below. It seems
that it cannot find the SDRPlay.

I have visited many sites, including the one Marcus suggested,
sdr.osmocom.org
Despite the fact that it looks to me that's all about Linux (now very
little of that) and not Windows, I found the words 'API driver for
windows' and downloaded it from the SDRPlay site and installed it.

_Result:_ still not working.

I'm stuck :(
Hence my question.

Kind regards,

Arie

Hi Arie!

Welcome to GNU Radio!
So, as the protocol demands (haha, as if!) I'll point you to the guided
tutorials: These should hopefully give you a nice introduction into a
couple of important GNU Radio concepts, if you're not aware of them yet.
If you are, they should still be a fun read :)!

http://tutorials.gnuradio.org

So, we'll need a bit more info from you to help:

* What is your operating system?
* How did you install GNU Radio and gr-osmosdr?
* Are you aware of
http://sdr.osmocom.org/trac/wiki/GrOsmoSDR#SDRplaySource ?

Best regards,
Marcus

PS: You replied to another email thread, so your email was hidden at the
end of that thread in my mail client, and I nearly missed it! It's
important to not reply to emails that are in a thread that you don't
want to participate in; most mail clients have some kind of "threaded"
sorting so that discussions that aren't of interest to one can be safely
ignored. I "corrected" that by /not/ replying to your mail but writing a
new mail copy all the stuff over, so that you can now directly
reply without risking your mail getting stashed in the depths of a
completely unrelated thread :)
