I usually work with both options checked: 'Do not let applications
receive the click used to focus windows' and 'Automatically focus new
windows'. I just tried to uncheck the last one, as it seemed it could
be the cause of the problem, but it didn't work: the problem still
happens.

Thanks for the info. It is more or less what I suspected. I chose
Debian because they seem to be the only ones who have GNUstep packages
in their standard distribution, but it seems they don't upgrade them
very often. I checked the testing and unstable releases for the
versions to come;

I have installed GNUStep environment as per the Installation advise
(gnustep-system-0.25.1-setup + gnustep-core-0.25.0-setup +
gnustep-devel-1.1.1-setup + gnustep-cairo-0.22.1-setup).
Then I had downloaded the sample GUI applications, and successfully build
and run them from the shell.
