Re: Change IPS Tag
Jamie, Only Nominet 'Tag Holders' have the ability to talk directly to the Nominet UK Automaton and sanction aTag change. Anyone may become a Tag Holder though, see: http://www.nic.uk/ref/tags.html Tucows is obviously( Tag = TUCOWS-CA ),as I am ( Tag = XEOTECH ). But, only Nominet Members get the discounted domain price. All details may be found on http://www.nic.uk An IPS Tag relates to the UK domain name registry only. Do other registrars have the ability to do this for other domains? I.e. could I request NSI to change the IPS tag for a domain and then have OpenSRS take it? I think the answer is no, probably because I don't even know if domains other than *.co.uk even have an IPS tag. What does IPS stand for anyway? It's Pretty Sweet? RE: Change IPS Tag
We have been members of Nominet since '98 and have only recently found out that IPS TAG is actually meant to be ISP TAG but some unidentified Nominet techie made a typo back in the mists of time and it has stuck ever since. IPS means nothing :O) or if you prefer an Internet Provider Services. This was probably never picked up or questioned because members (all IPS TAG holders) may have felt that it did indeed mean something highly significant and that there was a gaping hole in their knowledge which was best kept out of the public domain, and nic.uk has bumbled along ever since with the same kind of people in charge, a hopeless automaton, massive beurocracy, and ahuge number of staff of which none can code a decent management interface - If God wasn't an Englishman we would really be in trouble ;O) Kind regards David Dorey Xsession.Com Limited http://www.xsession.com -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Jamie - ListsSent: 14 November 2002 09:58To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: Change IPS Tag When a *.co.uk domain is being transferred to another registrar, the current registrar 'gives up' the domain by changing the IPS tag (in the case of OpenSRS, the tag would be changed to TUCOWS-CA). Title: Message Jamie, When a *.co.uk domain is being transferred to another registrar, the current registrar 'gives up' the domain by changing the IPS tag (in the case of OpenSRS, the tag would be changed to TUCOWS-CA). I think the answer is no, probably because I don't even know if domains other than *.co.uk even have an IPS tag. What does IPS stand for anyway? It's Pretty Sweet? Only domains controlled by Nominet(*.uk)use IPS tags. And AFAIK "IPS Tag" stands for "Internet Provider Security Tag", although I think that wasdefined pre-Nominet and it just stuck. Other TLDs are governed by their respective registries, and will have different transfer methods. Andy.
