Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] ESA-NASA WebWorldWind

2018-02-14 Thread bradh
Patrick,

Please don’t misunderstand – I’m happy that NASA does great things with open
source.

I did have a quick look at the difference on the GeoTools GeoPackage fork, and
it looks like there are some useful fixes in GeoTools that WWSK doesn’t have,
and some fixes in WWSK that GeoTools doesn’t have.

It’s up to those that write the code to decide whether to contribute back to
upstream projects (with all that this entails – legal issues, workload, long
term intent), and when. I think it would be great to get the fixes and
improvements into the upstream projects. Clearly that can’t happen without
Contributor License Agreements in place, but after that, you can propose
improvements and PRs as for any other contributor (just like me).

Brad,

As I tried to make clear from the beginning, we are very glad to contribute, by
providing ^supported^ access to our experience going down the GeoPackage road.
We just need someone else taking the lead. If our experience, on full display,
can be of help, we are most glad to coordinate in that contribution.

Everything the NASA WorldWind project has developed since 2002, has all been
open source. Before there was a Goog Earth there was NASA WorldWind. And I
might add, it was born of the NASA Learning Technologies program, entirely
focused on Education.

Unfortunately, we simply cannot take the lead on ^smartly^ bringing our
GeoPackage work into GeoServer. But we are glad to coordinate with someone
capable and interested enough to do that. AS they say, it takes a village. :)

Ian,

Got some deadlines these next couple days, hopefully our team will get to your
request later this week.

But it is all there to see on the Github website, with the primary effort being
an ‘easy install’ of GeoServer and ‘great packaging’ of GeoPackage. ☺

I’m sure anyone qualified, and looking at the repository, will quickly figure
out what would be good to include in GeoServer, which is of course where the
world would most benefit!

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] ESA-NASA WebWorldWind

2018-02-14 Thread Hogan, Patrick (ARC-PX)
Our GeoPackage work to facilitate that via GeoServer is extensive and carefully
architected. And we’ve discovered some other good things that would certainly
advance GeoServer.
https://github.com/NASAWorldWind/WorldWindServerKit

NASA is prepared to work with someone close to GeoServer for these features and
improvements to be ‘folded-in.’ We are glad to coordinate with a most
appropriate person who would take the lead in that effort.

[OSGeo-Discuss] ESA-NASA WebWorldWind

2018-02-12 Thread Hogan, Patrick (ARC-PX)
Dear OSGeo & GeoForAll,

Please indulge me three (3) points to make here (again),

(1) the ESA-NASA collaboration on WebWorldWind,

(2) the Explorer ^starter app^ and

(3) the WorldWindServerKit (GeoServer) with integrated layer viewer, the
Explorer (again).

(1) ESA-NASA Collaboration

ESA and NASA are working jointly to advance the ESA-NASA WebWorldWind platform,
https://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/web/.

ESA has built several apps with it, including the EO Browser for
http://sentinel-hub.com/

ESA Sentinel App for iOS:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/esa-sentinel/id1036738151

ESA Sentinel App for Android:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=esa.sentinel

(2) The WorldWind Explorer web app framework, http://worldwind.earth

The Explorer is good for GSoC students, SME’s, OSGeo aficionados, and a world
hungry to be on ‘one-page’ for spatial data. To reach that beautiful
world-working-in-concert we provide a ^starter app,^ the WorldWind Explorer. It
is possible for Earthlings to work in concert with each other on those common
solutions they all need, i.e., urban infrastructure management, weather,
climate research, first-responder stuff, etc.

(3) The WorldWindServerKit (WWSK 'whiskey')

The Explorer is integrated into NASA's GeoServer distribution, the WorldWind
Server Kit (WWSK, ‘whiskey’)

https://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/serverkit/

https://github.com/NASAWorldWind/WorldWindServerKit

• Whiskey is scale-able, it can be deployed to a server or run standalone on a
laptop.
• An agency could host a whiskey server (GeoServer) on the internet or an
intranet.
• An agency could publish their models and maps in their WWSK server(s).
• Whiskey can access data/maps/imagery from other remote Web Map Service (WMS)
servers, thus a whiskey server could be configured to provide a single point of
entry for many WMS services.
• If you advance ~2:34:00 (2 hours and 34 minutes) into this ‘Education’
session at ESA Earth Observation conference last September, you’ll see and hear
Bruce describing ‘whiskey’:
https://livestream.com/ESA/OpenScience2017/videos/163470616

2018-01-17 Thread Hogan, Patrick (ARC-PX)
Jody,

I don’t so much see this as ESA or NASA having success as much as I see our
motto ‘for the benefit of all’ being lived up to.

And of course, we are dearly glad for these open source geospatial solutions to
be listed on the OSGeo website, please!

[OSGeo-Discuss] ESA-NASA WebWorldWind

2018-01-16 Thread Hogan, Patrick (ARC-PX)
Dear OSGeo & GeoForAll,

Please indulge me three (3) points to make here,

(1) the ESA-NASA collaboration on WebWorldWind,

(2) the Explorer ^starter app^ and

(3) the WorldWindServerKit (GeoServer) with integrated layer viewer, the
Explorer (again).

(1) ESA-NASA Collaboration

ESA and NASA are working jointly to advance the ESA-NASA WebWorldWind platform,
https://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/web/. ESA has built several apps with it,
including the EO Browser for http://sentinel-hub.com/

(2) The Explorer

This info is good for GSoC students, SME’s, OSGeo aficionados, and a world
hungry to be on ‘one-page’ for spatial data. To that end s ^starter app^ the
WorldWind Explorer is there for Earthlings to possibly begin working in concert
with each other on those common solutions they all need, i.e., urban
infrastructure management, weather, climate research, first-responder stuff,
etc.

  * The WorldWind Explorer web app framework:
 *   http://explorer.worldwind.earth
 *

 * This is an active project undergoing rapid development at the moment
(in my spare time)
 * A way to play with it live!

(3) The WorldWindServerKit (WWSK)

  * The Explorer is now integrated into NASA's GeoServer distribution, the
WorldWind Server Kit (WWSK, ‘whiskey’)

 *   https://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/serverkit/
 *   https://github.com/NASAWorldWind/WorldWindServerKit
  * The WWSK is scale-able, it can be deployed to a server or run standalone
on a laptop.
  * An agency could host a WWSK server (GeoServer) on the internet or an
intranet.
  * An agency could publish their fuel models and maps in their WWSK
server(s).
  * WWSK can access data/maps/imagery from other remote Web Map Service (WMS)
servers, thus a WWSK server could be configured to provide a single point of
entry for many WMS services.
  * If you advance ~2:34:00 (at 2 hours and 34 minutes) into this ‘Education’
session at ESA Earth Observation conference last September, you’ll see and hear
Bruce describing ‘whiskey’:
