If your version is very very old then maybe it only recognises the JVC
DVD IR controls. However, if it had upgradeable firmware and was
upgraded then I would expect it to work

I have (as part of my collection) a SLIMP3, I use it with iPeng on my
iPhone.
Will the Squeezebox remote controls work with this unit? Sometimes I'd
like to use a dedicated remote (instead of iPeng) and I can't find the
original, and a touchscreen remote I've programmed for it likes to lose

Yes, any SB remote control should work. Some of the buttons have changed
over the years, but the basic control has remained the same.
