Lets not start a war here - I used Linux, am using now Apple, and (long) time
ago Windows (Windows 2000 mainly). I can’t say that any one is safer with your
data than others.

This scares me. I’m an all Apple house and was thinking about replacing
my ten year old Mac mini which hosts my LMS and local music files.
Should I hold off?

You can always build a system now and keep off from updating once macOS
has been crippled enough. Big Sur should still be good (at least the
latest pre-production builds).

I hate changing anything, since I’ve been trouble free with my current
setup for many years, but want to retire my Mini before it finally gives
out on me...it’s already starting to be slow to respond.

I’m down to one SB Touch. Mac Mini as a server (OS X Yosemite). iPeng
is my controller of choice. LMS 7.9.0. Erland’s plug ins are what keep
me in the ecosystem.

If you are familiar with Linux then I'd go with it. There are important
cahnges to macOS ahead, and Apple has deprecated the scripting languages.

Thank you for your reply. Would it better on a nuc or Mac Mini? Would
it best not to rclone vs NAS?

Instructions for Ubuntu install are here:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1188506/how-to-install-logitech-media-server-squeezebox-server

I think you'll have an easier time getting rclone to do what you want on
linux, but I'm only guessing here.

Yes, you use piCorePlayer with your RPi and Allo DAC. Those
instructions are here:
https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?106910-HOW-TO-Squeezebox-player-on-Raspberry-Pi-with-(or-without)-HiFiBerry-board

Install Material Skin plugin for modern UI on PC, phone, tablet.

Good luck!
